Greetings!

What is our theme this week?  Well, we have one of our favorite Texas wineries, Pedernales Cellars, pouring as well as wines from Israel.  They really don't have anything to do with each other, except that they are not the typical internationally recognized wine growing regions.  Check it out, its gonna be live!

See you there!

Cheers,

Matt and Sam

2008 Pedernales Cellars Vino Blanco

The 2008 Vino Blanco is a blend of several High Plains varieties including Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, and Viognier. This dry white wine delivers a harmony of crispy citrus notes with a subtle floral component to the nose. The taste is all about balance as well, and is the perfect white wine for a special dinner with friends or family. The grapes were primarily grown in the cool nights of the Texas High Plains and the blend delivers a mix of crisp citrus with subtle floral notes on the finish. Interesting juice, with fruitiness balanced by crisp acidity.

2008/2010 Golan Chardonnay

Golan Chardonnay was produced entirely from Chardonnay grapes grown in the Golan Heights. The cool climate, rocky volcanic soil and high altitude are ideal conditions for growing classic wine grape varieties. This non-wooded version of Chardonnay stresses the natural fruit characters of the variety. The Golan Chardonnay shows off bright lemon and apricot notes, rounded out with hints of flowers and tropical fruits.  This medium-bodied wine is a great combination of classic Chardonnay character and easy drinkability. Golan Chardonnay is ready to enjoy yet will remain in good drinking condition for about three years from the vintage.  We do not think twice before opening a bottle to accompany that fish right off the grill or that perfectly roasted chicken, hot out of the oven. The Galilee (or Galil) is the most northern, and generally considered the best, appellation in Israel.  The highest quality area within the appellation is the Golan Heights (or simply the Golan), the coldest region in Israel.  The vineyards on this volcanic plateau rise from 400 meters (1,300 feet) above sea level to 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) and receive snowfall in the winter.  The Golan Heights Winery is located in the town of Katzrin, in the central Golan.

2008 Pedernales Cellars Merlot

An excellent example of what Merlot can do in Texas. This Merlot has a perfect balance of blackberry and vanilla aromas with a solid finish. Featuring Merlot primarily from the Texas Hill Country, the wine was aged for one year using a mix of new French and American oak barrels. It has a wonderful blend of fruit and vanilla to the nose, while still also delivering some minerality unique to good a great Texas Merlot. Made with fruit from the Texas Hill Country and High Plains, the wine was fermented in steel tanks and aged for one year in American and French oak barrels.

2008/2009 Galil Cabernet Sauvignon

Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the higher elevations of the Upper Galilee. Full-bodied with concentrated berry and plum notes layered with a hint of herbs. A rich wine with characters and aromatic tastes of black cherry, ripe plum, berry and blueberry jam, with a delicate background of mint and tobacco. Glittering Bordeaux in color, the wine is medium-to-full bodied with well-balanced acidity. An elegant wine with a long-lasting finish.  The higher elevations of the Upper Galilee, the northern part of the Galilee viticultural area. Six months of aging in stainless steel, including several rackings. Aromatic tastes of black cherry, ripe plum, berry and blueberry jam, with a delicate background of mint and tobacco; medium-to-full bodied and well balanced; long-lasting finish. Best served at 64° F / 18° C to accompany a wide variety of dishes such as a juicy lamb hamburger, a quality cut of meat, roast chicken and even rich pasta. Nice wine with slightly subdued blackberries, black cherries and currants. Interestingly, the wine shows some green notes that may be the result of no oak aging at all. Slightly sweet notes of cedar wood cigar boxes and mint lead into a medium finish.

2008 Pedernales Cellars Tempranillo

This Tempranillo is a rich red with an earthy mineral nose and a hint of cherry. The color is brick red to purple with a medium body and a moderate spiciness to the finish. Made with fruit from the Texas High Plains and Hill Country, the wine was aged for fifteen months using new French and American oak barrels. Bacchus & Beery - "One of our favorite Texas Tempranillos. Good flavor with a bit of complexity and structure."

2010 Golan Moscato

Shows off bright notes of fresh citrus blossoms, grapefruits, guavas and ripe melons.  This lightly sparkling dessert wine is naturally low in alcohol, making it an ideal wine to sip along with dessert after a good meal.  Only a true curmudgeon could possibly succeed in not enjoying this wine. While we most enjoy Golan Moscato with dessert, others enjoy it as an aperitif or along with some cool slices of melon on a warm summer afternoon.  Golan Moscato is best enjoyed on the fresh side, within about a year and a half of the harvest.

2007/2008 Yarden Muscat

Orange blossom, marmalade and lemon zest notes layered with nutmeg and vanilla bean.  The wine is unabashedly sweet, yet retains an elegant drinkability. Yarden Muscat is ready to be enjoyed yet ages beautifully, taking on a richer marmalade character.  We like Yarden Muscat along with almost any dessert, but have a special weakness for pairing it with crepes suzette. Yarden Muscat is made by adding oak-aged brandy early in the fermentation of Muscat of Alexandria.  The result is a sweet aromatic wine that is both fresh yet has background notes of rich French oak.  The southern Golan Heights is home to the vineyard of Muscat of Alexandria.
