Saturday's Lineup

Greetings!

The weather will not stop us this week.  We are having a Valentine's Day themed tasting Friday AND last Friday's tasting is rescheduled for Saturday!  Two days of free wine in a row, what a treat!  This Friday from 4pm to 8pm we will open wines to inspire you for next Monday's day of love.  Whether you look forward to this celebration of romance or think it is all corporate marketing, use it as an excuse to indulge yourself.  Of course we here at East End Wines don't need an excuse.

Speaking of indulgence, Raymond Tatum will be serving up pork delights Thursday, Friday, and Saturday after 4pm.  Treat your tummy with a little love from the Three Little Pigs food trailer right here at the shop.  Pork and love, together again.  Permanent schedule to be announced soon :)

Saturday's tasting is all about Italian varietals from California, Italy, and, yes, Texas.  We will be pouring at our regular tasting hours from 4pm until 8pm.

See you there!

Cheers,

Matt and Sam

Three Little Pigs

Raymond Tatum has been cooking in Austin for over 30 years.  He started Jeffrey's in 1980, which is now one of the most prestigious restaurants in Texas.  He most recently cooked at the Backstage out on Hwy 71 before it closed.  Now he is doing his own thing, with his Three Little Pigs food trailer right here at 1209 Rosewood!  He will be open after 4 pm Thursday, Friday, and Saturday with a permanent schedule soon to be announced.

So what does this mean about the rumored license change?  Well, it is still in the works.  We plan to construct a patio seating area next to the trailer and, when the license has changed, you can buy a bottle here at the shop and hang out on the patio and deck area and sip away!  Time frame?  Minimum one month.  Probably a bit longer.  We will keep you updated ;)

But for now, come by, get some of Raymond's killer food and a bottle or two of wine (or beer) to go!  There will be seating for the trailer, you just can't drink alcohol until the license change, and I suppose it is a bit chilly :(  Soon, my friends....

NV Domaine Collin AOC Cremant de Limoux

Phillipe Collin, originally from Champagne, moved to Limoux in 1980. He chose this place for the altitude and the micro-climate, that allows production of quality wines especially for sparkling. 20 hectares of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Chenin & Mauzac, completed by some Merlot, Cabernet and Syrah. Phillipe Collin respects the environment, using only organic fertilizer and no grass killer. Harvesting is by hand. Final blending is Chardonnay & Pinot Noir. The entire wine making process from the vineyard to the bottling is managed by the estate, with modern and adapted materials. Chardonnay that has the fruit, mineral character and richness that invites one to taste it again and again. Fine and elegant, light and well-balanced, this wine is ideal as an aperitif and for after meals. The wine is mainly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with a little Chenin Blanc added in. Tiny bubble, clean fruit with nice layering and long on the finish. From the very start of our era, Titus Livy, author of a monumental Roman history, praised the white wines of Limoux. At that time they were still wines. During the VIIth century Benedictine monks founded an abbey in Saint Hilaire. It was there that in 1531, a monk discovered the natural transformation of still wine into sparkling wine. The first sparkling Brut wine of Limoux was born. Sparkling wines within Limoux have since inspired carnavals, bubbles creating a party spirit on every occasion .The southern slopes of the hills surrounding Limoux, classified for the appellation vineyards of Limoux, present a light and stony combination of clay and limestone. The natural geological protections on three sides of the Limoux appellation production area limit maritime climatic influences and create a transitional climate between the Atlantic ocean and the Mediterranean sea.

NV Graham Beck Rose

his finely crafted creation with its charming silver-pink blush and exuberant character is a Cap Classique destined for those who appreciate a fizz with flair. Flirtatious and fun with pin-prick tiny bubbles that burst gently and exhilaratingly on your tongue, it's a tingle no celebration or sunset should be without. Crafted from a selection of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from our own estate grown vineyards in Robertson, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. Chardonnay 55%, Pinot Noir 45%. Both varietals are hand picked: Pinot Noir at 19°B for complexity and length of flavour and Chardonnay at 19.5°B for fruit and elegance. Whole bunch pressing with fractional recovery from the whole bunches ensured that only the quality juice went into fermentation. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir fermented separately. Colour is obtained by an enzymatic reaction during the transport of the Pinot Noir fruit to the process. This is sufficient time for gentle colour extraction for this NV Rosé. After fermentation the portions are blended and then lightly fined and bottled for the secondary fermentation. This wine was given sufficient time on lees to develop subtle yeasty characters but to burst with berry and cherry flavour. Pale silver-pink. Aromas of raspberries, cherries and a few secondary whiffs of minerality. A lively mousse but fine in the mouth, with subtle red berry flavours enlivened by bright acids. Brisk on the palate, showing hints of oyster shell and fresh lavender. Flirtatious and fun, yet elegant and structured, it's perfect for all seasons and settings.

2006 Lucas & Lewellen Pinot Noir

Lots of ripe blackberry and cherry, with fruit forward plum and more red fruit on the palate, with an echo of the black cherry. Usually goes for around twenty dollars. Wine from great winemaker Dan Gehrs with grapes grown by Louis Lucas from Santa Maria Valley, the Los Alamos Valley, and the Santa Ynez Valley. "This Pinot Noir offers ripe blackberry and black cherry aromas with smooth, fruit-driven flavors of plums, strawberries and black cherries. This is a wine best consumed in its youth; over the next 2-3 years." Aged nine months in Neutral French Oak. Old California clones and more recent imports from Burgundy. Barreled with lees. This wine is mature and drinking well. Nice tannins from punch downs during the ten day fermentation. Tasty! This stylish wine is a blend of selected lots from two of our estate vineyards which include four distinct clones; some old California and some more recent importations from Burgundy. Fermentation took place in small, 1½ ton fermenters which were punched down manually 3-4 times daily for approximately 10 days. After pressing, the new wine was immediately barreled, with all its lees, in neutral French oak and aged for 9 months.

2007 David Smith Magellan Rouge

The 2007 L'Hérault Rouge has a deep purple color with a killer nose of garrigue-scented cassis. The wine is packed with dark fruits with a hint of spice and finishes fresh and long. My parents, Burgundians for as long as the Lafon family, went crazy for this wine last weekend with grilled lamb chops. "Gorgeous deep ruby color. Wonderful cassis/red fruit aromas, spiced with garrigue. Fine concentration, packed with cassis and red fruit aromas, but light on its feet, like the best of the wines from this drawn out growing season. Long and persistent on the finish. Drink now at 60 degrees for the primary fruit splendor, or age for up to four years." Languedoc - intense, great vintage, black & blueberry notes, chocolate. Great acidity balance, like Volnay. On a trip to visit some friends in the south of France, Bruno discovered a sprawling property in the back country of the Languedoc. The soil was incredibly mineral, laden with sandstone and shale. Just 30 km from the Mediterranean, set at 600 ft in elevation and containing some of oldest vines of Grenache and Carignan in the region, Bruno saw unlimited potential for making Chateauneuf-du-Pape styled wines. He knew that this unique combination of ancient vines, mineral soil, elevation and proximity to the sea could produce not only fabulously concentrated fruit but aromatically complex and elegant wines that would satisfy any Burgundian.

2005 Queen of Hearts Cabernet

The grapes for this wine were grown in our Valley View Vineyard not far from the Danish village of Solvang.  The vines were planted in the early 1970's and, in 2005, produced one of their finest vintages.  This wine is a blend of several small, quality batches, each picked at the peak of ripeness and flavor.  Each lot is carefully nurtured in the barrel for nearly two years, then masterfully blended and bottled on our premises. Enjoy Queen of Hearts Cabernet with beef, lamb, pork and vegetarian cuisine.

NV Mariposa

Behold. The most ultimate, badass, mega, super, best in the history of the world, ultra perfect wine for Valentine's Day; Brachetto. (Seriously, it's that good.) This sultry sweet wine from Piedmont, Italy is dark pink in color and is technically considered frizzante, or lightly sparkling. It looks fabulous in a Champagne flute, tastes of luscious raspberries and is even better with chocolate. In other words, it's a gift directly from the sex Gods, themselves. Casalone's mariposa Brachetto - From a winery in Monferrato, in the Piemonte sub-region of the Piedmont, started in 1734. The first bottles of wine were sold in the market in 1776. Land and vineyards extension are pretty much the same from then and the family still controls 100% of their production. Sweet with really ripe raspberries. Rose color and a nose of wild roses & raspberry. Sparkling with a pretty soft mousse, could make for an interesting if sweet aperitif with charcuterie. This will go well with chocolate desserts, or cheesecake with cherry sauce. This is wine in a more fruity than dry style, with a light to medium body. Historically this was a wine of the farmers in the field, with a little sugar & alcohol for energy & refreshment. this specific Brachetto is a bit obscure and somewhat difficult to track down, but for the money, this is a fantastic bottle of wine. It's sweet, without being cloying and has wonderful aromas of raspberry and rose petals. The thing that makes Brachetto so perfect for the big V, is that it has an alcohol content around 5%. This means that after drinking a bottle of wine with dinner and before you get to the nookie, you can sit down, sip a few glasses of Brachetto, chow on chocolate, stare deeply into each other's eyes, do some more sappy crap like that and you won't get super hammered and miss out on any late-night activities. Drink with chocolate soufflé, chocolate truffles or some chocolate body paint.

2009 Duchman Vermentino

Texas High Plains AVA. Stainless, 9 mo. Vermentino is the quintessential white grape of the Tuscan Riviera and the island of Sardinia. The Duchman Family Winery made Texas wine history when it became the first and only winery to bottle this classic, food-friendly Italian white grape. The 2009 Duchman Family Winery Vermentino is a white wine that offers perfumed aromas of grapefruit and slightly sweet pear on the nose. The palate offers more notes of citrus, pear, and a slight herbaceous character. This vermentino is a pale lemon color; it's enchantingly light and refreshing, with floral and mineral aromas and delicate pear and citrus flavors cheered by zesty acidity. This wine finishes clean and dry with refreshing acidity. A great option for oysters, sushi, and other seafood. 1,156 cases.

2009 Vallagarina Pinot Grigio

Pinot Grigio is one of the most recognized varietals in the world.  Northern Italy has seen much success with this quaffable varietal, resulting in the mass production of insipid, low quality wines labeled as such.  There are also a slew of more expensive examples that just don't live up to the price tag.  That's why we are excited when we find one that is inexpensive and delivers higher quality then expected from this exploited grape.  The 2009 Vallagarina offers fresh, floral aromatics with vibrant fruit flavors of apple, lemon, and mango notes with crisp, refreshing acidity and a lingering finish.  We just tasted this wine and are excited to add it to the lineup!

2006 Catine Valpane Barbera

In the glass; purple and plum hues.  On the nose, notes of sweet tobacco, leather, spice and dried fruit.  Flavors of dried red and black cherries, and more leather and spice.  In the mouth, super fine grained tannins and an umami tinged deliciousness on the finish.  A very unique, refreshing and very likeable style of barbera.  You can't find a more drinkable barbera than this. Barbera's versatility has been both a blessing and a curse. Due to it's adaptability Barbera was once the 3rd most widely planted red grape in Italy. This led to some bastardization, dilution and bad press. Cantine Volpane's Rosso Pietro wonderfully exemplifies Barbera's greatness. Terroir driven, structured, complex and completely delicious. Red, Dry, Medium-Bodied, Fruity, Rich. Chewy, old world Barbera can handle bold flavors. Drink with Cantonese style duck, lasagne or baked ziti and savory mushroom dishes.I'd normally suggest pizza with this, and you can still do it, but I think steaks would pair really nicely with this hefty barbera. Barbera is actually believed to have originated from the Monferrato region of Piedmont, where this particular one originates from.  Ironically, most of what you tend to see on the market are the more common Barbera D'Alba and Barbera D'Asti, so it was cool to stumble upon this one. In this price range, I'm so used to barbera's with that signature tang and acidity that this one threw me off a bit when I first tried it.  After looking at the information on the producer's website, I found that one of the things that gives Barbera del Monferrato its uniqueness is the addition of a grape called Freisa, which lifts the wine's aromatics and fruit profile.

2006 Bruno Porro Piemonte Barbera

Barbera is one of the classic Grapes of Italy's Piedmont region. Searing acidity has been a trait of Barbera though modern viticultural techniques and warmer regions have tamed the acidity, resulting in medium-bodied wines with bright, red fruit tones that feature hints of violets, earth and plum with just a whisper of tannin. In 1980, Bruno Porro and his wife Irma started a small 24 acre winery, called Ribote after an old beloved tree in front of an ancient stone farmhouse on the property. The estate lies in Piedmont just east of the city of Alba in the heart of the Langhe region with its gently rolling hills. All the vineyards face south and are located at an altitude of 1100 to 1300 feet. Uncertified Organic Wine (Producer states they do not use artificial fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides. While we cannot prove the veracity of this, we also have no reason to believe it is not true.) Medium-bodied, bright and fruity, this Barbera's flavors suggest fresh red berries with a slightly earthy backdrop.Total Cases Produced: 500.

2008 Vina Rocca Rosso di Rocca

Rosso di Rocca is 80% Nebbiolo, 10% Barbera and 10% Cabernet Franc. This is nominally speaking a "Vino da Tavola" meaning that Angelo Rocca is free to play around with a blend that includes 10% Cabernet Franc from an experimental vineyard planted by the local university. The Nebbiolo is from young vine Barbaresco. Nebbiolo is a fickle grape famed as much for its pale appearance as for its tannic character and produces some of the most perfumed and richly flavored wines. Though generally only medium-bodied, the wines possess rose and anise scented aromatics and deep flavors of cherry, orange peel and subtle green herb tones. Fermented and aged in steel. Juicy and jazzy with gobs of bouncy red fruit that energetically branches out on your tongue fanning out in striating waves of mineral-inflected red fruit with some appealing balsam and pine notes in case you needed to be reminded that this is serious Nebbiolo. At 80% Nebbiolo, Rosso di Rocca exceeds our country's varietal threshold and could be sold as Nebbiolo if it were made in this country which thank goodness it was not. This is recessionary Barbaresco, people. Get some!

2007 Monte Volpe Primo Rosso 07

A blend of many old world varietals, grown on "fox mountain" hillsides in the Ukiah Valley. Zinfandel, Petite Sirah (bringing nice tartaric acids), Sangiovese, Carignane, Negroamaro, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Syrah, fermented dry, with bright acidity. Plummy, berry nose. Darker fruits like black plum, cherry, brambly preserves, earthy, aged in French, Eastern European, & American barrels for three years, giving a little butter & spice. Scrubby tannins, took the rest in barrel well. Bottled 6/1/10. Great with grilled red meats, sauce ForestiÈre, rosemary. Rich full flavors, ample tannins and balanced acidity carry through a long, complex finish.
