Notes from April 17th FILS Event on R&D Career Paths

Of all the careers available in the life science industry, research and development often seems the most attractive and straightforward point for academic researchers to enter the private sector. But what are the differences between academic and industrial research? What is the best way to get a job at a biotech or pharmaceutical company? What are the differences between working at a startup compared to a large biotech/pharma? A distinguished panel of PhDs from a number of local companies discussed these questions and many others at the Futures in Life Sciences Series held at the new MassBio offices in Technology Square, Cambridge, on April 17th, 2012.

We would like to thank our Sponsors Emmanuel College, Averica Discovery Services, and Mass AWIS for their support of this event.

Graduate and Professional Programs (GPP) at Emmanuel College launched its new Graduate Programs in Biopharmaceutical Leadership in Fall 2010.  The next cohort begins in September 2012. The Graduate Certificate in Biopharmaceutical Leadershipis a one-year, part-time academic credential for scientists currently working in the biopharmaceutical research environment.  Each of the certificate's six graduate courses is offered in a 7-week session and delivered in either an online or Boston campus-based cohort. To learn more contact Alexandra Hartmann, Enrollment Counselor, at hartmanna@emmanuel.edu or visit http://www.emmanuel.edu/.

Emmanuel College is hosting a breakfast in Boston on May 14th from 8-10am for Biotech HR Recruitment Professionals to learn more about the program. To learn more and register, contact Alexandra Hartmann at the details above.

Association for Women in Science - Massachusetts Chapter Mentorship Program.

A mentoring circle is a small group of women scientists committed to meeting monthly to support each other with advice, encouragement and information. Each circle will consist of 3---5 peers and will be coordinated by at least one experienced mentor and one connector. AWIS is recruiting mentors to join their mentorship program. A mentor should be an experienced individual in the life sciences area who value giving back and developing people. The deadline to apply is May 30th, 2012. To Join the MASS apply to the program online by filling out the Mentor application on their website.
