Lauren Celano's article about Informational Interviewing for BioCareers
It's often hard to know what opportunities exist outside of academia because the academic and industrial worlds appear so different. Many people get caught up in career paths with key words such as, I want to be a consultant, investment banker, medical science liaison, clinical research assistant, project manager, etc. But what does it exactly mean to be one of these job titles? What skills are needed? What companies exist in this field? Which ones are hiring, especially at your level? How do you learn about which roles could be a fit if you don't know exactly where to start? Informational interviewing can be a very helpful resource, but what is the best way to find individuals to talk to, and once you find them, what do you say? Also remember that preparing, engaging with the individuals, analyzing the conversations and taking the time to reflect upon the interaction are key steps to making your informational interview a successful experience. Here are some points to consider.
