Fall Series Racing Coming Soon
Match Racing Sprinkled in
August 14 2012
Greetings!
I know the weather is still hot and thundery but looking forward, the Fall IRC racing will be upon us shortly.  We are trying to figure out how many boats to enter so if you are interested in racing - PLEASE sign up as soon as possible.  This is for the Vineyard Race,
Also one of the younger teams we had signed up for this weekend is in danger of pulling out as two of his crew have school exams and can't make it.  If anyone is keen to put together a team at the last minute and compete please let us know and conversely if anyone would like to sail with Aidan McLaverty please let Bill know ASAP; bsimon@oakcliffsailing.org

Until the Sun Sets: Training Every Week
Just a quick reminder as you are reading this coming back from holiday or a long weekend in the Hamptons or flying into NYC for a business meeting from Chicago. Oakcliff offers training every week.  Tuesday it is match racing drills and by now the competition is  high enough we will be applying for Grade 5 skipper points on occasion.  Wednesday nights we have fleet racing with coaches on the water and a debrief back on shore. Thursdays in the summer,  the gorgeous classic yachts come out to play and the play-time continues at the meeting house with a BBQ.   Make a point of it - pop out to Oakcliff for a mid-week sailing fix!

Saplings Win Grade 5
Max, Solomon, Seth and Collin
After a competitive and shifty but windy regatta Collin Weston, Solomon Krevans, Max St.Maurice and Seth Cooley came out on top.  The first flight was a bit light but then the sea breeze filled in and PRO John Mooney was able to get a solid double round robins in.

The last race between second place Jon Hammond and eventual winner Collin Weston  was a knife fight with both boats never more than a boat length apart the whole race.   Of note was that both Collin and Solomon are headed back to different Universities and they both have a goal of making the Collegiate Match Race Championships. If that happens they may be racing each other in the finals!

After racing the winners were able to enjoy their prize of a beverage or appetizer courtesy of Jack Halyards.  Next time you are there check out the Oakcliff Corner where signed medals of the winning teams are on display.

The next Grade 5 isn't scheduled until after the Fall Series and will take place on November 3rd.   But as mentioned above there is still room for another team this weekend at the Grade 4 and you get the bonus of being coached by Tom Burnham.
After last week's lengthy newsletter I decided you probably would enjoy a quick report.  I hope I was right :-)

But there is one more exciting piece of reading left.  Click on this link to read Oakcliff's Annual Report.  Special thanks to Jim Acquaviva for all of his help on this one!

See you soon,

Irish Sailing Humor
By now many of you have seen the spoof commentary of an Olympic Laser race by an anonymous Irishman.  I have been reluctant to put it in the newsletter because the language is decidedly NOT PG-rated but somehow the Irish accent makes it seem not as bad. My Mom also sent me the link so I figure it can't be 'that bad'. So if you haven't seen this and you are not easily offended go ahead and click above.

Congratulation Nautilus
Congratulations to D3, Ronnie, Hope and the rest of the crew on Nautilus for winning last Thursday's Sail the Sound for Deafness Classic Race.  It was especially appropriate as they were racing for racing for special education for preschoolers with speech/language delays and autism.

In conjunction with the regatta the kids and their teachers were raising funds in honor of their assigned boat.  And this group also raised the most money!  The teachers said that they would have raised twice as much and blown the competition away if they had been allowed to have a kissing booth. There is always next year :-)
