Match Racing Pushes Us Through August
Third Acorn Session Starts
July 31, 2012
Greetings!
With the Olympics in the UK I just couldn't resist.  They are not the 'real princes' but Kiwis Will Tiller and Harry Thurston are here for their third week in a row and running their second Clinegatta this one for a Grade 3.   They have also been making guest appearances at our regularly scheduled racing and may do so tonight and tomorrow so make sure you sign up to sail with the Kiwi Royalty.  Tuesday Match Race Drills,   Wednesday Coached Fleet Racing, Thursday Classics.

This newsletter is rather short as we are into the 'lazy hazy days of summer; in other words we are here every day working through the summer and taking a breath before the craziness of the Fall Series begin.  Yes Fall is coming.  Don't panic, just come sailing!

All Star Line Up This Week
Speaking of the Olympics, past Olympian Sally Barkow and Maggie Shea will be here this week sailing with David Storrs. They will be up against a pretty tough group of competitors including Magnus Sandberg who will be racing with 3 of our Saplings and a team traveling all the way from Turkey.  I don't know about you all but I find it very cool that this year alone we have had teams from the 'normal' countries of New Zealand, Australia, Canada etc. but also from Poland, Sweden, Russia and Turkey.  All here in little Oyster Bay.

If you want to join in, we are over booked for the racing but can always use volunteers Thursday - Sunday.  And here is a secret suggestion - why not race on Thursday and meet and greet the racers at the joint BBQ?  Same as always we ask that you either bring something to share or toss a donation into the trophy.  Email Bill to volunteer and click here to sign up for Thursday.
NEXT Thursday:Cocktail & Dinner at Mill Neck Manor
Caper Kids Next Thursday, the 9th instead of coming back to Oakcliff after racing, we will be going upscale and attending a fundraiser for the Mill Neck Services for the Deaf.  Regular Oakcliff Sailors are invited to a special 2 for 1 pricing for the cocktail party.  For more information please call Nancy at 516-922-4100 or click here
and choose what you would like to do on the upper left hand side.  You can sail as per normal or bring your own boat or just go to the cocktail party.  Come as you are or in your fanciest Great Gatsby Outfits.  It will be FUN for a good cause.

If you have any questions you are also welcome to email us
Acorns Graduating
Unbelievably Oakcliff's second crop of Acorns will be graduating this Saturday!  In this session they have recieved excellent trainng from guest experts including Forrest Williams from Marlo Ropes and Andy Colton from Awl Grip.  The Acorns need to finish their formal education but all indications are that the industry is ready to employ our graduates as SOON as they are ready.  How refreshing is that in this economic climate?

They also did another two boat testing / sail up over the weekend.  This one was to Mystic Seaport and they were able to tour the Seaport and enjoy the Antique Boat Show.  Early this week we will be jamming in as much of the business education as possible as many of them will be participating in the sailing and running of the Grade 3 Clinegatta.  Will and Harry just commented how cool it is how Oakcliff has grown in the 3 years that they have been sailing with us.  Thank you again to all of the supporters and if anyone would like to 'support an acorn' donations are ALWAYS welcome.

Please enjoy the Olympics and use them as inspiration to get yourselves out to Oakcliff.  Seriously don't we all have a little bit of "I could have done that" feeling when watching great performances?

See you Soon,

We Need a Bike Path
It would be so amazing if there was a walking/biking path along West Harbor.  Currently the only people who get to enjoy the view are drivers being distracted by the activity on the water.  Having an amazing spot for viewing our racing would be a BONUS

This is something that we tried to instigate last year and it seemed to die but now it is looking possible again.
