It's All Coming Together at Oakcliff
Are You Ready?
February 21 2012
Greetings!

This issue has some interesting new programs, including a Facebook Contest and something way at the other end of the spectrum, a luxury holiday in Phuket.  Also read below for a couple of updates on Oakcliff Sailors traveling the globe.

Closer to home, there are still three more opportunities to tune up your mind before you tune up on the water.  Bill Simon and Diana Klybert will join Anthony Pulgram and others in the city on March 5th for the second in a series of NYC seminars. Andy Green's on-shore Match Racing Refresher Seminar, North-U Trim and the custom designed What to Wear seminar which will give you all the information you need to be warm and dry in your next offshore race. Bermuda anyone?

Andy Green, the Robin Leech of match race commentary is coming to Oakcliff to entertain as well as educate.  Andy is also an Americas Cup Coach, World Match Race Tour and Extreme 40 sailor.  On April 1st he will be at Oakcliff to put his special spin on match racing basics and tactics.  He'll talk about how match racing and fleet racing compliment each other and will undoubtedly tell an interesting story or two.  If you would like to see a bit he did on the Monsoon Cup click here.  If you are rushed for time just watch the last 20 seconds :-).

Come learn more about this year's match racing events at Oakcliff and get Andy's observations on the America's Cup and other top level events. Join us at Oakcliff April 1 and ride a big wave of opportunity to become the best match racer you can be. Click here to register.

Mike Nicoletti sent us an update.  He has been accepted to the Simon Business School at Rochester University with a scholarship.  Again, his time at Oakcliff helped in this applications.  He is waiting to hear back from the other schools before making his final decision.

The waiting process isn't too strenuous though as he is in Florida racing the J-24 Midwinters  and a few other warm-water regattas.
Jeff Tacks Towards France
Jeff MacFarlane

When we last checked in with Jeff MacFarlane he was headed to the Caribbean 600 with Brad VanLiew. Turns out Brad sold the boat and that whole plan fell apart.  Jeff has learned, as all professional sailors do, that you have to be able to deal with sudden shifts in your plan.  Jeff also figued out a way to stay with the boat.

He is currently in Charleston getting ready to sail that boat to France.  Once there he will be able to immerse himself into the singlehanded culture.  He also has been using my French Lessons on his iPhone as it is essential to speak French if you plan to be a short-handed sailor.  He signed off his email: "a demain' which means of tomorrow.  Progress!

UPDATE:  They have just passed Bermuda and all is well.
What to Wear and How to Trim
Ladi in a Survival Suit
This might be overkill

Join Jerry Richards from Gill to learn all about the cool new items that Gill has come out with.  Also his significant offshore experience including multiple Fastnets  combined with his Olympic Campaigns training in the frigid English Channel make him uniquely suited to share his tricks of the trade. I might even toss in a few of the tricks I've learned. Hint: the Gill Women's Trousers are very helpful!  Jerry seminar is free and  will run from 1-3 on Saturday March 3. Join us a week from Saturday.

Two weeks later, on a Sunday Bill Gladstone from North-U will be here to talk about sail trim.  Click here to sign up and figure out how to use the accelerator on a sailboat.
The Q's go on the Road
Team Q Match Racing Sonars
Team Q

Mike Quaglio, two-time world champion (J-80 and Swan 45) has accepted an invitation to represent Oakcliff in the Ficker Cup being run at Long Beach Yacht Club March 22-25.  We all 'know' the Q's but here are some tidbits you might not know. At age 11, Mike took the helm of his family boat and never gave it up. In college, not being ideal size for FJ's Mike focused on wrestling and built on his high school wrestling success winning, conference, state and national titles!

Straight after college, Mike was back on boats and a fortuitous move that was, as he met the love of his life Kyra Goldsith, who is now a key part of Mike's team as at home on the foredeck as she is on the mainsheet.  Kyra was the UC Santa Barbara's female athlete of the year in college and is now one of the sweetest sailors at Oakcliff.

Also joining Mike Q will be Oakcliff sailors, Alex Nadolishny and one of our most versatile sailors, Mike Tolsma  Roun.ding out the team who will be racing Catalina 37s will be a local friend of the Q's,  Dave Dempsey and finally Mal Parker who is a trimmer for Ian Walker when he isn't racing around the world in the Volvo  Good Luck Team Q!
The acorn applications are starting to roll in.  On a personal note we are definitely looking for a good mix of men and women, girls and boys so if you know of a promising young person, give them a push.  We are looking forward to an exciting and effective season.

Sincerely,

Dawn Riley

Protest Tidbit

One fun tidbit from Bruce Cook's Judges Seminar, that you might be able to use in your next protest.  Boats travel 1.5 feet per second at 1mph.  Or you could just stay out of the protest room :-)
