Greetings!
While our fleets are in the shop being fluffed and buffed we have come up with a way to keep your brain sharp and shiny too. We have scheduled 5 important seminars and they are filling up fast. We are so very lucky to have great instructors like Bruce Cook, Peter "Luigi" Reggio and Larry White as well as Bill Gladstone and Jerry Richards joining us at Oakcliff this winter. It is conceivable that we can qualify 20 new umpires, judges and race officers. If this happens Oyster Bay will become one of the powerhouses of race administration. Are you ready to take the challenge?

New Regatta in Atlantic City
| We are putting together the Melges schedule and found this cool announcement:
"After a 20 year hiatus Ocean City Yacht Club and the Golden Nugget Casino are bringing back Atlantic City Race Week the weekend of July 21 and 22nd 2012. The regatta includes one design and PHRF ocean racing and excellent race management. Social activities include a cocktail party on Friday and a barbecue on the dock with live entertainment on Saturday."
Anyone interested in putting together an 'away' team? We're going over what that would entail and the details should be up on the calendar on th e web site before the next newsletter. |
Education for All at Oakcliff
| Bill went to a seminar put on by the CAD (Computer Assisted Design) company SolidWorks and reported back to the Oakcliff team. This is one of the programs that can be used in boat design, specifically the hull components and hardware design and manufacturing.
There were a lot of things that he was totally geeked out about but the main 'cool' take-a-ways were in the advancement of the processes integrations technologies. They actually have the ability to create a 3-D design on the computer, spin the item around, adjust, tweak and then hit "PRINT" and out of a 3-D printer comes an accurate 3-D plastic form. Now that IS cool. If this is your area of interest feel free to chat with Bill the next time you are at Oakcliff. |
Seminar Line Up & Sign Up!
|
 | | Do YOU know what these flags mean? |
Make sure you sign up for as many of these seminars as you can fit into your schedule. Here are your options:
March 3: Learn What to Wear Inshore and Off In this seminar you will receive expert tips on how to stay, warm, dry and happy no matter what the conditions are outside of your private cabin. Well, maybe warm, dry and totally ready to sail when you crawl out of your shared bunk that first night on your way to Bermuda. Finally on March 11 join us to learn how to Become and Excellent Trimmer at the North U Trim seminar. We'll keep reminding you and you can always check out the calendar for more details, but why not make a plan now and sign up.

Oakcliff Heads to Chicago
|
 | | A Summery Chicago Day |
I will be at "Strictly Sail", the Chicago boat show this weekend. I am looking forward to presenting a seminar on the Oakcliff Programs at 11:45 on Saturday. I'll be focusing on our greatly expanded Acorn and Sapling programs. Later that day, I will also be moderating a panel of expert sailors including Jerry Richards from our great sponsor Gill. Jerry, along with Farley Fontenot, Nick Turnkey and Etienne Giroire, will be sharing their best racing tips. I expect to have a lively conversation as they are all characters. Especially Farley!
If you are nearby and haven't made up your mind about attending, you MIGHT want to take a look at this link. There are some very interesting and creative seminars spread over the four days and they are almost all included in your ticket price. I'll be sitting in on some others. So hopefully, I'll see you in Chi Town.

Finally we have now sent out the year-end thank you letters. If you do not receive your acknowledgement either in the mail or electronically, in the next few days please let us know. Also if you have any questions about your letter feel free to email or call the office at 516 802 0368. And as always, it is easy to make your next donation on our web site. It is going to be a very exciting 2012 and you definitely want to be a part of it.
Truly Yours,
Dawn Riley Oakcliff Sailing Center
PS: On a personal note - my sister Dana Riley also had a great Key West with Deneen Demourkas on Groovederci. |

| Cup Dates in Michigan |
 | | Tom Ehman's Cup Date |
| |
Keeping in the Midwest theme, Tom "The Chairman" Ehman of the America's Cup, will be hosting more 'Cup Date's. These are like the one that I did last year in San Francisco.
He will be in Traverse City on April 4th talking to local sailors and the University of Michigan Alumni. There will also be a kids Cup Date at Bayview Yacht Club in the afternoon of April 5th and an 'adult version' (not quite sure if that sounds correct) in the evening.
If you do make it there tell Tom that Oakcliff sent you. I had lunch with him last week in LA and we talked for almost 3 hours about Oakcliff's impact on sailing as well as the every evolving America's Cup.

| Andrew Wins Key West! | | Very shortly after making a commitment to Julianne, Andrew skipped town. He did have a good reason as he was asked to sail Key West Race Week on a Melges 24 with Rolex Yachtsman of the Year Bora Gulari. Andrew met Bora last summer while working and racing on the Great Lakes, aboard Oakcliff's Ker 11.5.
Not only did they compete at Key West, they dominated! They won SOLIDLY and didn't even have to race the last race. Congratulations yet again!
