Greetings!
We have heard from a lot of our supporters over the holiday break and everyone seems to be doing well and all are very excited about 2012. Onsite at Oakcliff I can honestly say, we are getting goosebumps when we look at how everything is coming together. The acorn and sapling programs are going to be spectacular. The guest coaches that will be coming in and training with us are top notch. Our seminars are filling up quickly. It's going to be a good year.
Read on and I think you'll get as excited as we are.

Get Your Umpire Certification Here
| Ever wanted to shout - Youuuuuuurrr OUT! Then join Bruce Cook at Oakcliff, Saturday, January 28 for the US Sailing Umpire Seminar and exam.
Everyone is welcome to attend. Even if you are not planning on becoming an umpire you'll keep your head in the game in the off season and you'll be a better sailor come spring.
If you are planning on taking the test, we highly recommend some pre-seminar preparation. You should read and review; the Racing Rules of Sailing especially Part 2 and Appendix C and D, The ISAF Match Racing and Team Racing Call Books, the ISAF Umpire Manual and the ISAF Case Book as well as the US Sailing Appeals Book. You can download all of the reading by clicking on the links above. Also, this is totally unofficial but I would say that the above list is in order of importance.
Again, all Match Racers can benefit from this seminar. You'll not only learn the rules but you'll also learn about about things like Umpire Positioning, what they are looking for, basically being able to get inside of the Umpire's head. Think about it... how many times have you really really wanted to know what the umpires were thinking? :-) Sign up now. |

David Storrs - Rockstar!
| Many of you have sailed with or against or umpired with David Storrs. In the two years of Oakcliff's existence he has become one of our most avid match racers. At one point he was considering moving into umpiring because it might be a kinder and gentler avenue to stay in the sport.
After passing the test, one of his assessors may have said something about him, at age 67, being a bit too old to be starting down this path. I am not sure if that is what spurred him to change his focus away from umpiring and towards his skippering but whatever it was, it has worked:
Oakcliff's David Storrs is now ranked 151st in the world and 20th in the US. Nice work!
PS: He also did his first 'keg-stand' at age 67.

On a personal note I have been on the road over the break. In Miami the Orange Bowl provided a wide and varied forum to talk about the Oakcliff programs. Full disclosure, Key West for New Year's was just for fun. Last weekend the Rose Bowl Regatta was a more concentrated crowd of high school and college racing teams and they were very keen to learn about the Acorn and Sapling programs. Today I am in Park City with our great sponsor Gill and the College Coaches Association. We are meeting and skiing and meeting. Although if someone wants to do a snow-dance it would be appreciated!
My holiday will wrap up with US Sailing's National Sailing Programs Symposium and a board meeting in Long Beach CA. Then it is back to Oakcliff as before we know it will be back on the water.
See you Soon... Very Soon! Dawn Riley Oakcliff Sailing Center
