Fall Series, Shields & a Party
September 20, 2011
Greetings!

The newsletter you received yesterday was actually a draft! Oops - here's the final copy.

Fleet racing is back in full force here at Oakcliff. Saturday, both the Ker 50 and 11.3 had an excellent practice in preparation for the American Fall Series which starts this weekend. Additionally, beginning Thursday, over 30 Shields teams will vie for the coveted National Championship.

If you are not involved with either of these events we have the classic racing at 12:30 on Saturday and Sunday as well as Match Racing for Classics at 9:30 on Sunday.

Shields at the Topmark

The much anticipated Shields National Championship starts this week! On Wednesday 30 boats will convene and compete for the title of National Champion. Two Oakcliff teams, headed by Bill Simon and Hope Glenn, will compete. Bill is sailing with Harry Thurston, George Huntington, Bahar Gidwani and Jacon Mayer. Hope is sailing with Liz Duffy, Jim Acquaviva, George Frank, and Kirk Larsen.  Other Oakcliff supporters are scattered through the fleet including Acorn Claudia Delahoy who is sailing on the refurbished Stealth with Bam Miller.   Good Luck To All!

If you are not sailing but free, we can use up to 4 volunteers to help out with mark boat duties on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  Please email

bsimon@oakcliffsailing.org   ASAP if you can help out.

*Hope is no longer sailing because her father, Woody, is in the hospital. Please keep Hope, Woody, and their family in your thoughts and prayers this week.

Ker 50 on her way to the racecourse
In preparation for the AYC Fall Series, both the Ker 50 and Ker 11.3 practiced this past Saturday. With fair breeze between 10 and 17kts, teams were able to practice mark roundings, sets, douses, and starts.

If you are interested in participating in the AYC Fall Series and/or the Manhasset Fall Series, please sign up now! There are even a few spots available for this coming Saturday 9/24, click here to go to the calendar and register.

Classics in 20kts!

Dolphin
Have you ever sailed a classic wooden yacht in 20kts of breeze? I hadn't until Sunday's classic race aboard Dolphin.

I noted two great things about the day. First, was the wind - with gusts to 20 kts - pumping from the NE. The best puffs manifested themselves through the break in the land between Lloyd Neck and West Neck. The boats that stayed in these puffs were greatly rewarded.

Second, and rather surprising to me, was the impressive performance of the classic boats in such breeze. On Dolphin, we started the race with a reef and the #2 jib, but shook the reef before completing the first lap of the course. Additionally, the NY30's, with their massive mainsails, really took off on the reaches.

All in all it was another fun day on the classics. If you haven't been out yet this fall, what are you waiting for?  Register for this weekend or any of the races on the Oakcliff Calendar.
See you on the water!

Team Racing Report
seawanakaTR
Last week Dawn volunteered as a team race umpire at the Seawanhaka Island's International Challenge Cup. This is a traditional Seawanhaka event and five teams traveled from as far away as Scotland.  The winning team was St. Martin, which happened to have some local Oakcliff talent onboard, including Liz Duffy, Henry Lee, Wyz Mooney and Karen Martin.

When Dawn congratulated them on their win Liz said.... "I attribute our win to our Oakcliff Training"  LOVE IT!

Congrats to the rest of the team as well: Robyn Phillip-Norton, Leo Vasiliev, Chris Johannessen, Alex Belinky, and Roger Boutelle.
Last 2 Tuesdays!
Sign up for next week's Tuesday Match Racing Drills.  There are only two left! Also note the new time: 5pm - if you're running late just give us a call and let us know.
