Greetings! As we embark on one of our most important weeks of the year, we'd like to send out a big THANK YOU to all the volunteers, supporters, acorns, and staff who helped keep Oakcliff afloat this week. We successfully dodged hurricane Irene with minimal damage and have continued to ready ourselves for the Oakcliff International Match Race and the Vineyard Race. This week we are giving Dawn a well deserved break from the newsletter, so I'll do my best to fill her shoes. - Mike (Nico) Nicoletti |
| Oakcliff International and Grand Slam Finale! |
Racing kicks off today for the Oakcliff International Grade 2 Match Race Regatta. Not only is this one of the biggest events Oakcliff will host this year, but it is also the final regatta in the US Grand Slam Match Race Series. Teams will compete for a cash purse of $10,000, the US Grand Slam Series Trophy, and an invitation to the 2012 Congressional Cup.
Currently, Laurie Jury (NZL), K-cup winner, is the Grand Slam Series points leader. Will Tiller and Team Full Metal Jacket Racing are in 2nd. We're expecting some intense races, so come check out the action and follow our twitter feed and website for live updates!
This event could not be a success without our volunteers. Many thanks to the umpires, the race committee members, and the families housing the many teams from out-of-town.
This regatta marks an important milestone for Oakcliff as we strive to 'Raise the level of Sailors and Sailing in the US'

| Hurricane Irene | Oakcliff and it's fleet of 50+ boats, 3 buildings, and countless other assets survived hurricane Irene with minimal damage. Aside from the generator running out front, it's business as usual at Oakcliff as we prepare for our biggest event of the year: the Oakcliff International Match Race!
Big thanks to Oakcliff Staff, Acorns, and Supporters for their hard work in preparing the boats, yard, and buildings for the storm. |
| Oakcliff wins J-120 North Americans |
Acorn Jefferey MacFarlane, along with David Halliwill, snagged yet another victory - this time in the J-120 North American Championship.
Check out the races on Kattack! If you've never seen this before, Kattack provides a great recap of the racing action. Here are the links.. Race 2 (3rd) Race 3 (2nd) Race 4 (1st) Race 5 (1st) |
| Acorns make flags for USMRC |
Thanks to the Oakcliff Acorns, US SAILING will have a full set of boat and umpire flags at their disposal for ladder events and the US Match Racing Championships. Making 75 flags was no small feat... Acorn Aidan Vascatto had a bit of a heavy foot on the sewing machine pedal at first. When one of the saplings (senior acorn) coaching him said, it's just like taking off from a stop sign in a powerful car, he replied "I'm only 15 I don't drive a car!"
Aidan is now back in training for his high school's football team and Randy is back at Webb Institute where he is training to be a yacht designer and engineer. Oakcliff hopes both will be back next year.

| Vineyard Race! |
The Oakcliff Ker 50 and 11.3 are prepped for the 2011 Vineyard race. Koko and I will join John Mooney and a team of Oakcliff supporters on the 50 in the IRC 50 division. The 11.3 will attempt to continue it's streak of podium finishes in the double handed division with acorns MacFarlane and Delahoy. Wish us luck and stay tuned for a full report next week. !

Workout of the Week with EvoSport!
|
This is the first in a series of articles from Oakcliff Sponsor Stephen Gourlay and the EvoSport Fitness Centers.
Both Dawn and I have been working out with Steve at EvoSport this summer. Steve designs his training programs specifically towards your goals and sailing aspirations. Swing by EvoSport (in Bayville and Oyster Bay) if you are are ready to take your sailing to the next level -- and tell them Oakcliff sent you!
Thrusters to Toes - this is a great exercise because you can do them at home and don't need any special equipment. All you need are two hand weights or two water bottles.
- Hold the weights (or bottles) with a neutral grip (hands facing each other), no lower than ear level, with your elbows facing forward (not out).
- The Squat - keeping a tight core, and your eyes fixed on the horizon, squat down to a 90 degree level (alternatively, sit down into a chair for less intensity). Your weight should be over your heels. *
- The Thrust - thrust straight up, straightening your ankles, knees, and hips. Simultaneously, press your weights above your head and extend on to your tip-toes and hold your balance there for 5 seconds. **
This multi-muscle group exercise not only strengthens your legs and shoulders, but also engages your core.
* The key to this exercise being performed properly is to make sure your knees do not extend beyond your toes while you are in the squat position
** Be sure to contract your lower lumbar and abs while balancing on your toes
If you have questions about EvoSport or this exercise, feel free to contact Steve Gourlay, owner of EvoSport and professional trainer.

If anyone is planning on racing you NEED to sail in 10 races before you are qualified. Please let us know ASAP if you would like to charter a boat.
If you are looking to crew we have also been approached by a couple of skippers looking for their last crew. If this is something you are interested please email race@oakcliffsailing.org
