Mystic, Newport, Oyster Bay Match Race
Oakcliff is Everywhere!
June 21 2011
Greetings!

First of all, Happy Midsummer's Eve!  We will be taking full advantage of the sun tonight with Tuesday Match Racing Drills.  The winds look to be  OK so

sign up and keep your fingers crossed.

This week Oakcliff is spread around the Northeast.  Dolphin is pulling into Mystic where she will be a showcase at the Mystic WoodenBoat Show.  Teams and umpires from as far away as Scotland will be coming into Oakcliff for our Grade 3 Match Race this weekend and the Oakcliff All American Offshore Team will be all over Newport and Bristol, talking, sailing and fundraising.

Wherever you are you can be a part of Oakcliff this weekend.

A Nice Story about a Good Guy
Bitter End Racing

I picked this up from Scuttlebutt and thought you might enjoy.

While working at a local medical clinic in the greater San Diego area last week, I picked up a chart with the name "North" on it. As I entered the room, I read the first name "Lowell". After a double take, I immediately recognized the patient to be indeed THE "Lowell North", as in North Sails. It was hard to concentrate on my doctoring as I had a wonderful interaction with Lowell and his kind wife Bea.

They must have been embarrassed as I was gushing over how long I had been

following his career and what a great fan I was. Talk about a brush with fame for a lowly PHRF racer turned cruiser secondary to a growing family and job responsibilities.

The nurses looked at me as if I was nuts. I kept explaining to them..."5 x world champion, 2 x Olympic Medals, America's Cup, etc." The landlubbers just didn't get it.

After a couple of hours in my care, while we were chatting about the Etchells World Championship, which I was keeping up to date on by reading Scuttlebutt, he was finally ready to be discharged home. When he got up, he kindly thanked me for my care. He then proceeded to pull out his North Sails belt right out of his pants and handed it to me as a memento of the occasion.

I was speechless. What a class act. Thanks Lowell and Bea North for the greatest shift of my career. -- Dr. Johannes Neuendorf

I also have a few good stories about Lowell ranging from the Chicago Yacht Club Deck when I was 16 to just a couple of years ago at the Bitter End Regatta (pictured above). We are lucky to have good guys like him in our sport.

Last Weekend Wrap Up
No Wind Dial Up

Last weekend was a great one.  We had a full turn out for the Friends of the Bay Regatta.  Unfortunately the winds didn't cooperate.  But being positive and productive many of us jumped in to cool off and got in quite a good workout trying to kick and swim the boats back into the bay.

Sagamore with Oakcliff's help raised significant funds to support the North Oyster Baymen's Association effort to provide terminally ill children with entertainment during their hospital stays and on this one day some of the kids received funds to in turn buy small father's days gifts for their dads.  Nice.

Sayville Yacht Club was the Sunday stop and Oakcliff received a great reception from a room packed with commodores.  It was my first time to the Sayville Yacht Club and boy was it a beautiful windy day.  They tell me it is like that 365 days a year and I almost believe them.

Match Racing in Oyster Bay
New Sails!
This weekend we will have 8 teams here for the Oakcliff June Grade 3 Match Race on Saturday and Sunday.  We are looking for an experienced lobster boat drive to act as a spectator boat.  If anyone is interested in spectating or in driving please let Bill know at bsimon@oakcliffsailing.org

If you don't want to watch and would like to sail, the Match Racing for Classics Sailors will be going on on Sunday.  Meet at OBMC with your life jacket and Ronnie will get you set up with a boat.  Hunt will be running the races and keeping score.  It is fun sailing filled with sportsmanship.

Umpire Training
Umps

Looking into the future certified umpires are going to be in short supply.  Match racing is exploding around the world and we are already scrambling to keep up with demand.   Oakcliff will be hosting an umpire training on Thursday and Friday evening, July 14 and 15.

I highly recommend that anyone who might be interested in umpiring and even those who just want to understand the rules better consider

attending this training.

So bottom line,  it is a good thing that we have so much daylight as we  still lots of sailing to do.  Don't forget Thursday night's classics followed by the new weekly social event of a BBQ at Oakcliff.  $20 suggested donation to go towards the beer, wine and food.

I'll miss you all on Thursday as I'll be in San Francisco speaking at the latest 'Cup Chat' with Stan Honey and Shannon Falcone.  I am not sure what I'll be talking about but am positive that Stan will be super smart as always and I can't wait to hear (and you can too) from Shannon what it is like to fall through a AC 45 wing sail!

Sail Fast!

Offshore Team Fundraiser This Saturday
Offshore Team
This Saturday there will be a fundraiser at the Herreshoff Museum in Bristol RI.  I will be there and hope to see a bunch of Oakcliff All American Offshore Team Supporters.  The menu is great!  The drinks will be plentiful but you won't need any of that to be entertained.

Jerry Kirby will be on stage regaling the group with sea stories.  This is something people will buy tickets to!  Oh yeah - that is what I'm asking you all to do.

Saturday 7-10 pm
Be there!

Trimmer Needed
One of our supporters is looking for a trimmer to sail this Saturday on the Riverside Yacht Club Stratford Shoals Race.  If you are interested email:

Mystic Seaport
I'm going to assume that everyone has been to Mystic Seaport but if I am incorrect then you need to put it on your bucket list.

If you are in the area this weekend.. or you feel like a drive to Orient Point, a relaxed ferry ride and a 5 minute drive on the other side you should stop in and say hello to Alec and Mike who will be spreading the word of Oakcliff to the experts and aficionados of wooden boats.

If you don't get up there you can also chat with Acorn's Claudia and Jacon who are on the water today delivering Dolphin up and will be exploring behind the scenes tonight and tomorrow.  I imagine it will be a great educational experience.
