Triple Play - Classics, Melges and Shields

Choose your Fleet
June 14 2011
Greetings!
Once again it is a jam packed schedule this week.  Tonight the match racing drills will focus on tacking duels and quality jibes.  Sign up now and be at Oakcliff at 5:30 if you want to join in.

The other big push is for shields teams.  Race tomorrow night at Sagamore, Saturday during the Friends of the Bay Regatta and then next weekend is the districts at Larchmont.  Ideally you sign up for all three and then you are a third of your way to qualifying for Nationals.

Overall this week is fleet racing and next week we will be back to match racing on the weekend.  Read below for all of the opportunities.

The Classics have now transitioned into their summer schedule.  Thursdays will see the fleet off the dock at 5:30 for one lap of the race course.  You'll finish in-time to stop by Oakcliff for a grill your own dinner and then move onto a local establishment - say Jack Halyard's - for those who want to continue on into the evening.

As was mentioned at the Spring Classics Awards party, we have signed a new partner.  Through that partnership we can offer a special privilege Active Oakcliff Supporters.  You are invited to take advantage of the Vintage Yacht Club at a discounted rate.  Through this arrangement you can sail aboard one of our yachts or choose from their extensive fleet in locations around the Northeast.  This is their web site and more details will follow.

Herreshoff Regatta and Mystic
Hope Glenn

Three opportunities for classic aficionados:

First: this Saturday we have been invited by Woody Glenn to sail in their Herreshoff Regatta.  We are looking for a total of 8 individuals who would like to take Dolphin and Nautilus on the race course.  You are also invited to the 'Show off & Tell luncheon' at the clubhouse dock of Seawanhaka at 11:30.  SCYC will accept credit cards. Race will start after the 13:00 Captain's meeting.  There will be a few drinks after and you can choose to stay for a dinner on the porch or join the others at Sagamore for the other party.

Second:  We will once again be sailing Dolphin up the sound.  This time destination Mystic.  She will be representing Oakcliff at the Mystic Wooden Boat Show.  The schedule will be to leave next Tuesday or Wednesday and return after the show the following week.  As always it is weather dependent.  If you are interested in volunteering please contact Mike Smith directly at:    MHSmith38@sbcglobal.net

Thirdly: If you would like to volunteer at the Mystic WoodenBoat Show to talk up Oakcliff and also get to see a lot of really cool boats we can provide housing on a visiting merchant marine ship.  The show runs Friday the 24 through Sunday the 26th.  Email: race@oakcliffsailing.org if you can do this.

Friends of the Bay This Weekend
Melges crew and Shields Teams Wanted!
M24 & maurice
Last week's clinegatta was a success with 20+ knots on Saturday and 4 good races on Sunday.  Mike "Koko" Komar won the series.  In true team spirit, most of the boats rotated helming duties throughout their team from race to race.  The best part as a coach was that it was clear that the racing got close and closer as the day progressed.

This week the Melges Teams will be participating in the Friends of the Bay Regatta.  We also would like to have all 6 Shields sailing. Please please sign up now.

I have a feeling that we will be sending out a supplemental email this week but for now I wanted to get this out so you can plan your days.

Sincerely,

Dawn Riley

Congratulations to all of the classic sailors and especially to the crew of Caper for winning June, Sireon for May and Nellie for the full Spring Series.

The awards dinner was great despite the weather and we look forward to other fun evenings.  Thursday nights will be casual beers, salad and cook your own hamburger with a suggested donation of $20.
