Round Block Island - Home with 2-4-4

Oakclif AAOT in RBIRLast weekend's Round Block Island Race was a typical race - sometimes frustrating, sometimes exhilarating with a whole lot of sailing thrown in.  We were lucky in that the temps were extremely pleasant during the day and very foggy during the night.

The Oakcliff All American Offshore Team on USMMA Sailing Foundation's Vanquish finished second.  Oakcliff Ker 50 and the 11.3 sailing in the double-handed division were 4th.

Here is a 'Facebook Style Wrap Up' from the 50:
Great 1st two hours, caught majorly in sea breeze transition, anchored and watched the whole fleet sail away. Very few visuals until fog socked in BIG time. Ran into multiple holes at the Race - did a full 360 in whirlpool with Vlad's commentary $*x! - must have done well as came out of fog in am in front of fleet but slowed at the gut just enough for the SC 50 and Gracie to correct out. Oakcliff Team did a phenomenal job prepping the boat. Crew did 20+ sail changes with gusto. Nice work.

Artwork in Oyster Bay
If you are not up for getting on the water or maybe more realistically would like to supplement your Oyster Bay sailing experience with a little bit of culture,  this week provides plenty of opportunities.

Karl's Gray

Tomorrow night you can wander down Aubrey Ave and listen to the tunes of Johnny Q.  Music is courtesy of the Main Street Association and starts at 7pm.  Along the way you are welcome to stop in the various gallery's participating in the monthly 'Art Walk'.  Often there are snacks and perhaps a glass of wine offered.

The art showings continue on Saturday with the Oyster Bay Art Festival. This show and competition will be held from noon to 4.  There is still time to enter your own work.  Email email: baydayartfestival@googlegroups.com to find out more about the prizes for children, young adults and adults. If you aren't quite talented enough to create art, you can still participate by voting for your favorite piece and help decide the people's choice award.  No lobbying Kurt.

Every Week - Truckloads of Racing

Now that we are into the summer, the schedule becomes a bit more regular.  For instance. Every week except following a major holiday we have Tuesday Night Drills. Wednesday Fleet Racing is a great time to get your skills up in new positions or bring friends or both.

The weekends are packed full too.  This weekend we have Classics on Saturday and Sunday. This is the second to last weekend so make sure you sign up and sail on these beautiful yachts which are in seriously tight competition.  Next week will be the last weekend classics racing.  For those of you who have raced don't forget that the awards party will be at 2 South Street on June 11th.

Many Saturday's including this Saturday we also have a Grade 5.  We prefer that you sign up as a team. If you haven't found or formed your team yet sign up anyway and we will do our best to place you.  There are still spots open for this weekend's Oakcliff June Open - Grade 5.

Waterfront Center Fundraiser & Bay Day

Waterfront Center

Our neighbors, The Waterfront Center are having a fundraiser this Saturday from 6-8pm. The inside scoop is that it will be fun and classy cocktail party.  There will be  a charachter artist, a silent auction and live music.

The party is hosted by The Deming's and will be at 84 Cove Road, Oyster Bay.  Tickets are $100 per person and can be purchased at the door.  For more questions or to RSVP call (516) 922-SAIL(7245)

If you can't make the fundraiser you can still have fun at Bay Day, an annual festival to promote environmental awareness and stewardship.  It takes place at the Waterfront Center on Sunday from 11-5.  There will be live music, food and the crowning event:  ATFR - Anything That Floats Race. Sure to be a tiny bit crazy with a whole lot of fun thrown in.

Seriously Save the Date - June 18th
Team Oakcliff M24

If you sail you need to be here on Saturday June 18th.  We will have as many boats participating as possible in the Friends of the Bay Regatta.  It is a one day event and is for a good cause.   If you remember last year we had a Farr 40 as well as the whole Melges fleet on the water.  We would like to do even better this year.  Sign up now and help support a good cause.

When you are forming your teams, we will be able to provide you with a few able bodied seamen.  Literally.  That weekend will be hosting 4 Navy 44's filled with midshipmen who are on their summer cruise from the Naval Academy.   Can you say yes sir welcome aboard?

To round out that weekend, US SAILING'S Road Show will be here with us helping out with sailing, blogging and reporting.   Time to put Oakcliff on the US SAILING'S Road Show Map.

Consistency is very important in sailboat racing and it seems that this is reflected at Oakcliff.  We are consistently busier than we ever thought possible.  It is because of a great team... that would be you!

Thank You!

Oakcliff Helps Select World Match Race Tour Boat

Boat Design
Over the winter we were approached by yacht designer, Vladimir Murnikov as he was amongst many competing to provide new designs for the world match race tour.  Our first reaction was, you don't need to redesign the boats, the Match 40s are ideal.  With that being said there was a plan to diversify.

We used it as an acorn project and reviewed his designs and plans and reported back to him.  Recently we were pleased to receive a message from Vladimir thanking us for our help and saying how it helped him to win one of the design spots.
Nice!
