BIG WEEKENDS Coming Up!
Classics, Clinegatta & Friends of the Bay

June 7 2011

Greetings!
Last week was so busy it seemed to fly by.  Going on that theory the next two weeks should be an absolute blur.

This coming Saturday is the last of the Classics Spring Series followed by a prize giving dinner.  Both Saturday and Sunday will see a Melges 24 Clinegatta at Oakcliff.  The normal weekly schedule will have Thursday evening classics racing added and next weekend, June 18th is the Friends of the Bay Regatta.

Of course you can also sign up for Tuesday Match Race Drills tonight and Wednesday Fleet Racing tomorrow.

Saturday and Sunday we will have the Melges 24s out on the water with fleet racing drills and coaching.  Hopefully we get some good hot breezes as that will make it even more fun.

This is an ideal time to pull in new people and put your team together. Remember your registration fee includes a great dinner on Saturday night. Sign Up Now

Friends of the Bay - June 18
Team Oakcliff M24
We plan to have all of the Melges 24s on the line for the Friends of the Bay Regatta again this year.  We also will field as many other boats as we can.  It is entirely possible that we race the Melges, Shields, Match 40s and the 11.3 and 50.

US SAILING's Road Show will be here covering Oakcliff, Sagamore and our visiting Navy Mids who are available to sail with you.  Just let me know how many able bodied seamen you would like. :-)

But please sign up NOW so we can put the teams together.  If you have done the clinegatta you will receive priority for the Melges as well as those who have a full team.  Sign up early and often ... oh no that is voting :-)

Shields Teams Wanted
Shields sailing
The Shields are available for all to sail.  If you have any intention at all of racing the nationals you do need to sail in 10 regattas.  The great news is that Wednesday nights count as well as Sunday's at SCYC.

Also, the Districts are also coming up June 25-26.  The racing is at Larchmont and if we have the full fleet out we will likely be able to have a tender on stand by in the event the winds die for the sail home.

A reminder, the Shields National Championships are here at Oakcliff in conjunction with Seawanhaka September 21-24.  It is not that often that you have a national championship in your own back bay.   We do expect that you make a contribution towards operating expenses as well as a damage deposit of course but terms are negotiable.

Volunteers and Housing needed for  Invitational June 25-26
Peter Buckingham

Race Committee and Entertainment Committee Volunteers are needed to help run the June Oakcliff Invitational Grade 3 Match Race Regatta June 25 and 26. This is one of the best ways to get a front row seat and be close to the action. No experience needed,  we will train you. Sign up here or call Bill Simon at 516 802 0368.

We have a few Umpires and Teams who are traveling to our area for this regatta and will need housing. If you have a room or two available please let Bill know.

Race Committee, Entertainment Committee and Housing counts towards your volunteer commitment and is a great way to support what Oakcliff is working towards.

So in summary - come racing this Satruday on Melges or Classics, enjoy a great dinner, race on Sunday on Melges or Shields and then next weekend is everyone on the water in all modern boats.  You all are going to be busy!

Sincerely,

Dawn Riley

Congratulations to Alec Snyder, George Franke, Jim Acquaviva, Chris Dundon and Hally Dinkel for winning the Grade 5 Match Race.  It was a crazy shifty day with all teams have moments of brilliance and .. not.

Classics:
It is coming down to the wire, will Caper win? Nellie? Brilliance?

Match Racing for Classics:  On Sunday morning multiple sailors rotated helming duties for 3 hours of sparing and training.  Winner = Everyone.

Oakcliff -AAOT:
The offshore team had their 1st experience sailing without adult supervision.  The start was stellar and they picked their way from Annapolis to Newport through light and tricky conditions.
