Greetings!
There is a lot of news at Oakcliff. You can read about it below but also remember you don't have to wait for the newsletter to sign up and come out. The calendar on our website http://www.oakcliffsailing.org is always open for business. We'll have Tuesday Match Racing Drills tonight. Tomorrow night is the second Wednesday Night Race and don't worry about being behind as the 1st week's racing was rainy enough only the toughest sailors with the best gear went out. Either night but especially on Wednesdays we love it when you join together and show up as a team. So start getting social - Facebook - is a great tool for this. Once you are on Facebook, join the Oakcliff Sailing Center Group and you can post messages to other members. And don't forget the beautiful historic classics racing this weekend.

Oakcliff and the Waterfront Named #1 Pearl of Oyster Bay
|

Artist Jerelyn Hanrahan and the Chamber of Commerce's Tracy Dellomo congratulated Oaklcliff and the Waterfront Center on being named as the number one pearl of Oyster Bay.
If you stop into Oakcliff you will see a very large 'pearl' in the window. It is a part of an art project initially supported by the Oyster Bay Main Street Association. Artist Jerelyn Hanrahan has designed a public sculpture which will be placed at Theodore Roosevelt Park. It will consist of different sized pearls laid out as a necklace almost 40 feet long.
The project is still looking for donations and hopes to have the pearl necklace laid down shortly. For more information or to donate please call Ellen at 516 922 2479.

Safety at Sea
|
Ralf Stietz of the USMMA Sailing Foundation and Oakcliff Board member led a Safety at Sea seminar for Oakcliff Staff and the All-American Offshore Team, now known as the Oakcliff All-American Offshore Team through two days of intense training.
We had a combination of classroom and practical sessions. Personally it was a great reminder of all of the best practices that you hope you remember BEFORE you need them. Wear your safety harness, if ever shooting a flare hold it so the hot burning mess doesn't burn your arm or your life raft and life jackets need to fit. If you haven't worn yours in the water you need to do so to find out if it works for you.
Most importantly we all realized that the best defense is being smart and safe before any situation develops. You should have the safety equipment but it is best if you never ever have to use it.

Please have a wonderful and great Memorial Day weekend whether you are racing on the 50 Round Block Island or on the Classics or enjoying friends and family. And of course a special shout out to those serving. Come home soon and safe and we'll take you out on the boat of your choice.
Sincerely, Dawn Riley Oakcliff Sailing Center |
