May 17, 2011
Greetings!
It has been a crazy spring and we are all looking forward to this torrential rain going away and the beautiful sunny weather returning for this weekend's classics racing.  Either way you might want to check out the new Gill Gear which will keep you warm and dry in the rain and cool and protected in the sun.  Read on for more details.

Classics Racing Starts This Weekend

For all of you smart people who have waited an appropriate amount of time for the weather and waters to warm up before going sailing, your wait is over.  The Spring Classics start this Saturday.    If you would like to sail on any of the boats please sign up now so we can reserve your spot.

Milwaukee Report
Milwaukee Community Sailing Center on a Sunny Day
Last Saturday I spoke to the Midwest Women's Sailing Conference, modeled after one that has been going on in Southern California for years. Even though the weather was markedly different with a cold Northerly Gale blowing  the organization was great, the attendees keen and the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center sparkling.

For those of you who have been to Milwaukee and have not visited the sailing center you are missing out.  A strong local effort, led in part by Peter and Olaf Harken has ensured that there is a spectacular new office and classroom building.  The plans and fundraising for a more extensive boat yard and repair facility is in the works.  The best part - much like Oakcliff which is open to all sailors -Milwaukee it is open to all who are and want to become sailors.  Some of their sailors are now planning on training at Oakcliff.  Isn't networking wonderful!

Match Racing - June 4 and 25-26
New Sails!
Match Racing is still in the schedule.  The Team Tiller clinic last Friday provided  some great one on one coaching for those lucky enough to be able to attend.   As a bonus two of the Kiwi's who got lost on their way to the Roosevelt Cup jumped into the Match Racing for Classic Sailors Series and had a good day of sailing before they headed out to the airport.  Team Tiller is scheduled to return later in the summer so watch this space.

June 4th's Grade 5 Match Race at Oakcliff is a great time to put together your team and take your new skills to the starting line.  Our Grade 5's are first come, first served so reserve your team's spot early.

The weekend of June 25 and 26 we are hosting a stand-alone Grade 3, the June Invitational.  If you would like to request an invite please do so now as we are about to start recruiting from further afield.

Finally if you are planning on coming out to tonight's Tuesday Night Match Racing we will move the show inside for a chalk talk.  We aren't wimpy but it is hard to match race in blinding rain and as I write this I can't even see out the window!

This week is a great week to read your rule book and to get out your magnetic boats to play out tactical situations or to visualize that perfect spinnaker set.  Enjoy and stay dry.

Sincerely,

Some pretty cool highlights.

You can get NOAA weather for anywhere there is a station by typing weather.gov (not com) forward slash and the city name.  Once there it is surprising how much information you can find from radar to wind barbs.  Hint:  The barbs go up with each half of a barb equaling 5 knots of wind until you get to a triangle.  That would be 50 knots and hopefully you have reefed!

PS: we will plan a field trip to the local NOAA office later in the year.
