The Races Keep on Coming
Triple header this week
  May 3 2011
Greetings!
What a week aye?  A Royal Wedding, a successful SEAL Team 6 operation, record temperatures yesterday and raining cats and dogs today. I don't want to overreach in relating world events to Oakcliff but we are reaching around the world as well.  International teams are arriving for this week's Grade 3 Clinegatta, an article mentioning Oakcliff just appeared in a German sailing magazine and there is more to come.

More on that later but for now read below for an American Spring Series report and news on events coming up over the next few weeks.

Classics Day in Oyster Bay
There is a new event in Oyster Bay.  The Sagamore Yacht Club and many local business have joined together to create a new and 'classy' classics day.   It will be Sunday May 15th from noon to four and Oakcliff will have Dolphin and Nautilus docked at Sagamore for the public to view.  We will also have the center open to talk to people about what we are all about.  Put it on your calendar. Also,  if anyone wants to volunteer to be a tour guide email us at race@oakcliffsailing.org

The web site address is here   It should be fun and I personally think their graphics above are great - they just make me smile.

American Spring Regatta - Weekend One

Farr 40 and the CRAZY AYC finish

What a difference a week makes.  Last weekend we were out practicing on Easter Saturday and it was cold and miserable and with eye stinging wind driven rain.   This week we had to slap on the sunscreen.

Believe it or not that is they way it is supposed to work.  Practice should always be harder and it will make the racing easier.  I'm not saying that the racing was easy as there were some bizarre wind shifts and patterns resulting in the last race on Sunday being abandoned.

There were three races on Saturday and one completed on Sunday.  The race committee started race five on Sunday.  In the last three minutes of the prestart the wind speed plummeted from 10 knots to 5 and then continued to drop down to under 3. Somehow we made it around the top and drifted down the course with a big left shift making it a little bit easier as we were reaching with poles on the headstay.  We were half expecting to finish at the leeward gate but the race committee signaled a change of course to give us a half mile upwind windward  and leeward leg.  They couldn't have made it any longer unless they wanted us to round the Ferris Wheel at Rye Playland!

One hour later, High Noon who had captured a zephyr crossed the line as the rest of the boats parked in zero-point-zero knots of wind.   About 29 minutes after High Noon finished, it was obvious the rest of the boats were not going to finish within the  half hour  time limit so the race committee wisely abandoned the race.  Some were asking why, especially as Oakcliff's Farr 40-1 was only a few yards from finishing.  The reason is that all boats who didn't finish would have been scored TLE (time limit expired) this would have resulted in High Noon getting 1st and all other boats in class one being scored as a third.

This weekend we will have the two Farr 40s and the 11.3 out there again with most of the crews the same as last week.  Although with the overlap of the Clinegatta we are missing 1 tactician and 2 trimmers.  If there area any good tacticians or trimmers out there interested in jumping on board for just one day please email race@oakcliffsailing.org ASAP.

Clinegatta HERE
Match 40s and Dave
The Oakcliff Team has been working overtime from the 'normal' overtime.  We will have the 6 Match 40s on the water tomorrow for Dave Perry's Clinegatta.  On Saturday we'll add two more and all of the support boats for our Grade 3.

The lineup is impressive:
Jon Singsen of King's Point sailing with a boatload of cadets ,  Mike Buckley winner of the 2010 Chicago Cup,
Doug Shannon long time Oakcliff racer who has flown in some of his team from Vegas,  David Niemann a surgeon from Wisconsin who performs up to 30 surgeries a week.  It will be interesting to see if he can translate this skill onto the race course.
Mark Lees is an up and coming team traveling from the UK and Bob Hughes of Chicago is racing with Tovar Mirsky's team as his crew.  Tovar is ranked an incredible 4th in the world.  Bob Hughes has also had success on his own winning the Canada's Cup which is a long running America's Cup type challenge cup between the United States and Canada.  Last but not least, Oakcliff Coach and legend, Dave Perry will jump from coach to competitor.  Three of the teams, Dave Perry, Will Tiller and Doug Shannon will be racing with Oakcliff Teams on board.  Stacking the deck.

A big shout out to all of the volunteers who are making this event happen.  Todd Field, Amanda Downing, Herve Riou, Liz Duffy, Henry Lee, Bob Limoggio, John Meirs race committee and on the water support.  The umpire team of: Jesper Wilken our CHUMP (chief umpire) from Denmark, Bruce Cook, Phil Pape, Yoram Sharett, John Tracy, Jim Walsh, Heinrik Pedersen, Daryl Waskow.  And for housing our wayward sailors: David Storrs,  Ayer Bellerman,  Will Glenn and John Mooney.  And of course Hunt for the use of two of his brand new match 40s to bring the regatta fleet up to 8.

A final note, we will be hosting a BBQ for the Clinegatta Competitors and volunteers on Saturday after racing.  Herve the famous French Chef will ensure the food is great.  We would love to have our  American Spring Teams and other supporters stop by and meet the teams and grab a bite and a beer. Suggested donation $20.  We just need to know if you plan on coming so we can cater.   Email race@oakcliffsailing.org if you would like us to reserve a spot for you.
