Sailing Four-Cast: Four Hot Events Ahead

Real all about it!

April 12, 2011

Greetings!
Oakcliff heats up early this Friday with a Dave Perry Match Racing Clinic preparing racers for the weekend's US Sailing's ABC Qualifiers, the first step toward capturing the US Match Racing Championships. There are still spots open for the clinic only.

Next Saturday will see Oakcliffers out on the Sound for a valuable, fun and fully coached IRC practice session in preparation for the American Yacht Club Spring Series which is running the weekend of April 30, May 1 and the following Saturday only, May 7.   We are closing registration soon so please sign up now.

American overlaps with the Oakcliff Spring Invitational Clinegatta which will be held May 5-8.  Great local and imported talent will meet for a two-day Dave Perry clinic followed by the season's first of five Grade 3 match races.  We can use help housing the imported talent.  Email race@oakcliffsailing.org if you can help out and we will make sure you have interesting house guests.

What else can we say except,  let's go sailing!

We had a fabulous time at last Sunday's IRC practice, taking the Farr 40 and Ker 11.3 out for a shake-down sail. Now we need you to fine-tune your skills and our race boats for top performance. If you would like to sail and have not signed up yet, don't wait a second more. Click on the links above to register for one or both events. (Those racing in the AYC Series should attend at least one practice session.)
US SAILING ABC-Area Skippers Named

The Oakcliff venue was the most requested site for the US SAILING's ABC- Qualifiers. Oakcliff's Race Director Bill Simon identified a few reasons for this: US Match Racing Champion Dave Perry is giving his one-day Match Racing Clinic Friday, April 15 - a great tune-up before the regatta. Also, Oakcliff is developing really good home-grown match racers and is gaining a reputation for running good events.

Sheilds

This year's ABC Match Racing Qualifier skippers are: Anthony Pulgram, David Storrs, Frank Tybor, Mike Komar, Jamie Ebenau, Mike Quaglio, Alec Snyder, Miguel Corti, C. Brooks and Bobby Martin.

We are full for the regatta but still have room for the Dave Perry clinic.  If you are interested in taking part Please register now . There is still room and you will improve your game for sure.  We never stop learning!

Saturday's Early Bird Grade 5 Results

Saturday brought great work on the part of sailors, race committee, umpires and volunteers. Even the weather was on-point. Half of the racing was in a Northerly, followed by a very quick 180 degree shift to the South which more or less happened in between flights so racing wasn't delayed at all. With a bit less breeze than last week, spinnaker work and lighter wind tactics were key.

Congratulations to all who participated:

1st - Mike "Koko" Komar; 2nd -Doug Shannon; 3rd - Mike Quaglio; 4th -Andreas Giacoumis; 5th - Jamie Ebenau; 6th - Alec Snyder; 7th - Anthony Pulgram; 8th - John Baum. Shields Early Bird Start

Women's Talents Welcomed for IRC and Match Racing

Dawn Riley coaches Lynn A.

Dawn backs Lynn up on Ker 11.3 kite trim.

Sunday's IRC practice session featured co-ed sailors of all ages. Bright and early Tuesday, we read Scuttlebutt and noted Oakcliff Coach and Board Member Dave Perry's comments on women's match racing opportunities in the US:

"Women's match racing is an event in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games for the first time.

There are many women's match racing events, including clinics, in the region. A great source of information on women's match racing is the Women's International Match Racing Association (WIMRA)."

Dave has put together a detailed plan for those wanting to get involved and raise their match racing game. It's called the Road to Rio, so check it out on US SAILING's website. Read the rest of Dave's article in Scuttlebutt 3318.

We are a part of a movement bigger than any one of us.
