Grade 5 Match Racing Off to a Great Breezy Start

Shields at the TopmarkMore than 35 match racing enthusiasts put their all-out efforts into a great day on the water Saturday, with  short courses and shifty winds testing tactical and boat-handling skills. Northwesterly breezes built from 12 knots to 20 +, with big 25+ knot gusts during afternoon racing.

A dozen support crew and race committee members kept the seven flights of racing rolling along as eight teams took part in Oakcliff's first Grade 5 match racing event of the season. Racing was deceptively close and action-packed, with tie-breakers determining 4th-7th places. The event served as a great opportunity for everyone to get their heads in the game for this week's Saturday racing and upcoming Grade 5-2 events here at Oakcliff.

Here are Saturday's results: 1st - Jamie Ebenau; 2nd-Alec Snyder; 3rd-Doug Shannon; 4th- Andreas Giacoumis; 5th-Vincent Marchetto; 6th-Ben Sternberg; 7th-Anthony Pulgram; 8th-Mike Quaglio.

There is still room for one more team on Saturday, April 9. It could be yours! Sign up now for sailing, race committee or umpiring assistance. All sailors are needed and expected to serve as umpires when not racing. It's a great perspective to take onboard for your next start!

Event Housing & Umpire Volunteers Needed

Volunteers with room in their hearts and homes for sailors, let yourselves be known! We need people to volunteer to house our out-of-town participants for the May 5-8 Spring Match Racing Grade 3 Clinegatta and our Oakcliff International Grade 2 Match Racing Regatta sailors, race organizers and volunteers as well.

Please go to our website calendar to register your interest in volunteering.

If you are interested in umpiring for any of our events, you are always welcome (and needed) to ride with the umpires and learn as you go. You can register as an umpire volunteer as well, by clicking on the event on our calendar. Just show up an hour early to the event for the pre-race umpire meeting. Email race@oakcliffsailing.org or call 516-802-0368 for more information.

So when you're at home, check out our website and activities, and when you're not, come on down to Oakcliff - to sail, volunteer and to meet and enjoy others who share our vision of raising the level of sailing and sailors in the U.S., and right here in Oyster Bay!

Sincerely,

The Oakcliff Sailing Team
