Ficker Cup Sailors Talk Lessons Learned
Race Program Director Bill Simon Joins the Team
Early Bird Sailing & Volunteer Spots Calling
Oakcliff Team Share Ficker Cup Insights

Collegiate All-American sailor Mike "Koko" Komar and his talented Oakcliff team know what winning is all about. Returning this week from his first Grade 2 Match Race event in Long Beach, Koko and the team share lessons learned from challenging themselves in a competitive international field filled with great depth of experience and professionalism.

"Mark roundings were silent, boat handling was exceptional, everyone got along well on the team," said Koko. "We never made the same mistake twice in a prestart and we learned so much faster competing against a deeper pool of talent." Team member Andrew Wills agreed and said the team has no regrets. " Our boatspeed was just as fast or faster than any other boat on the course," said Wills. "Don't be afraid to jump into the fire and try new things, even if some don't work out. You might get burned but you'll survive and come out with tougher skin." The team shared these other key points:

  • Crew work and crew dynamics are key to moving to the next level.
  • Learn faster by practicing against crews that are better than yours.
  • Keep it simple, in all aspects of racing and event logistics.
  • Practice hard to learn faster, deepen your skills and discover what works.

Congratulations Oakcliff Team, for all your hard work and effort. Our Ficker Cup team included Koko, Andrew, Acorn Jeff MacFarlane, and Oakcliff Supporters Kyra Goldsmith, Mike Tolsma, and Mike Quaglio. You can benefit directly by coming out and practicing your skills with our Oakcliff sailors. Bring your crew and get better faster at Oakcliff. Check out Ficker Cup results.
