Happy Thanksgiving
November 17 2010
Greetings!
Well it is finally time to admit the season is winding down, but what an amazing season it has been.

We have had 18 days of IRC racing on various boats, totaling more than 485 "sailor-days" of Oakcliff big-boat racing.  Twenty-six Tuesday Match Racing Drills brought a conservative estimate of 390 "sailor drill days".  Practically uncountable classics and shields sailing totaled at least 200 sailor-days just on the Oakcliff boats alone.  And between the fourteen graded match racing regattas Oakcliff hosted this summer, competing skippers received over 2200 ISAF ranking points.  Some impressive numbers.

Congratulations Hope Glenn
Hope Glenn Congratulations to Hope Glenn for receiving the most improved skipper award at Sagamore Yacht Club's Awards Dinner.

Those of you who sailed with Hope this summer know how appropriate this award is.  For those of you who did not have the pleasure, you missed out.

Hope showed up at Oakcliff and said, I'll do anything on board.  She did foredeck and trimmed but soon progressed aft to the helm. From the rainy and foggy to the sunny and to the very, very windy, Hope was a regular.  One Wednesday we were a bit short so it was just the two of us sailing on a Shields.  I happened to be wearing a skirt so doing foredeck was extra fun but even with all of the laughing Hope's talent shined through.  Congratulations Hope!
Last Weekend of Match Racing
No Wind Dial Up
This Saturday's skipper's meeting will start at 10am.  It will be the last match race of the season. Last weekend it was so beautiful that there was no wind and eventually the boats were towed back to the moorings and the debrief was performed in the hot sun at Wall's Warf.  This weekend looks like much better wind so sign up  on line for your last chance to race the Match 40s in 2010.

If you can't make it on Saturday you are more than welcome to stop by USMMA at King's Point and listen to the live commentary and watch the Collegiate Sloop Championships Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  More information can be found at http://collegematchrace.com/

Lasers - Reserve your Equipment

For those supporters who would like to use Oakcliff equipment for the Seawanhaka Frostbiting, we just need to know in advance so you can get your blade bags. Call us at 516 802 0368 or email race@oakcliffsailing.org

Also please remember that you are responsible for fixing any damage so double check the equipment before you splash it.  As one supporter said .. 'oh just like a rental car'.  Bingo!

Seawanhaka's winter frostbiting has been going on since 1956!  For more information on thier time-honored tradition go to the winter sailing page at http://www.seawanhaka.org
Anyone who hasn't gotten their volunteer hours in, you are welcome to join us Monday through Wednesday of next week to help us get the rest of the Match 40s and RIBs out of the water and winterized before Thanksgiving.  If we don't see you before then - happy turkey eating!

Sincerely,

Movie Nights
White Squall
Do you know how many absolutely  amazing movies there are around sailing?  Classics like Captain Ron  and the locally filmed Masquerade.

OK they might not be classics but surrounded by other Oakcliff Supporters they will be fun!  The plan is to run movie nights at 7pm on the 2nd and 4th Friday of February and March.  Conveniently this is the 11th and 25th of February and the 11th and 25th of March.  So save the date in your calendars. Bring your friends and  we'll make the popcorn.

Holy Action Batman!

Extreme 40s - The America's Cup is going to be in this type of boat?
By now everyone knows that the America's Cup is going to be sailed in 72' catamarans.  We still don't know where but the bets are starting to line up behind San Francisco for the 2013 finals. My question is - what do you do in a match race when the other boat crashes and burns like they are in the video above?  Go to commercial?

A teaser for an Old ABC program on the Volvo.
A little more old school here is a short teaser from an ABC show on the 2001-02 Volvo Ocean Race.
