| Greetings!
As winter nears the newsletters will be a little shorter and possibly less frequent. With that being said everyone at Oakcliff - supporters and team - seems to surprise me with their energy and great ideas so we may end up with programing all the way through the winter! See below for some of these activities.

| Frostbiting At Seawanhaka |
Frostbiting at Seawanhaka starts this weekend. You are all invited to a chili party on Saturday 4:30 to 7:30. If you register for the season as a winter member the chili party is free. Otherwise stop by and join in for $15. Sunday Seawanhaka will host a clinic with expert coaches. Over the winter, Oakcliff will have 4 to 6 lasers for our supporters to use. They will be offered on a first come first served basis. For more information.... Seawanhaka Web Site |
| Manhassett Went Windy |
Manhassett Fall Series on Saturday was crazy .. blowing dogs off chains and cops out of donut shops. We saw winds of 23 with sustained gusts of 28 on the mooring. As we nosed around the corner, and at about the same time the RC called it for the day, we were getting winds of 28-34 and sustained gusts near 40. When we turned back down towards the harbor the winds increased.
As an FYI at Oakcliff we will always put the safety of the boats and people first. We were following the committee out to see if the winds would drop but if for some reason they had decided to start a race in those conditions we would have made an executive decision to head back to the harbor.
But it is still an excellent time to talk about safety and what every person can do on every boat in any condition. Keep an eye on the rig, the fittings, the blocks and equipment, the sails etc. Every person should become aware of the load and their patterns. In other words do not sit inboard of an afterguy block in the 'triangle'. Be aware of the loads of the vang trying to pull off of the mast. Do not spend any time at all directly under the boom etc. This is something that can be thought about and practiced in any wind condition but is absolute in heavier winds. It also tends to reduce boredom when you are hiking on the rail for hours at a time :-)
