Greetings! I don't want anyone to panic but it is time to get the rest of your Fall sailing scheduled. We essentially have five weeks of full-on sailing left in the season.
Tomorrow night is the last Wednesday Night Race at Sagamore and this weekend we have American Fall Series on the IRC boats. The weekend between American and Manhassett Fall Series is our newest and 'funnest' event. The Harvest Regatta and Kick Off Party.

American Fall Regatta
|
We are still looking for a few people in key positions for the American Fall Regatta. If you are interested please sign up ASAP and if you have any questions feel free to call 415 760 7642. If you need an excuse, to get out of the house and away from the office: the weather looks to be unseasonably lovely this weekend. Close the computer and come sailing! |
Newport and The Boat Show
|
I spent one hour at the Newport Boat Show on Sunday. It felt a bit like a strafing run as I checked out some of the new boats, investigated and began negotiations on an Oakcliff Sailing Center signature line of gear and re-connected with about 10 people in the industry.
Also at the boat show were Oakcliff Supporters Patricia and Mercedes with 'Hannah's Mom'. What a gorgeous and productive morning.
After that it was back to Harbor Court to listen to the "Legend's Panel" of 12 meter racers. Ted Turner was authentic. Halsey Herreshoff and Ted Hood were brilliant. It is amazing how sailing keeps you young and sharp.. and funny.
All the is old is new again and vice-versa. Halsey Herreshoff was inducted into the America's Cup Hall of Fame and in his acceptance speech he explained that his father had designed a racing catamaran in 1875 then proceeded to point out to Russell Coutts that he and BMW Oracle were very lucky as the patten for this catamaran had run out after only 17 years. :-).

Training at Oakcliff
|
From the outside it probably seems that we are sailing, racing, sailing and working at Oakcliff but we also are fitting in training sessions so that everyone - acorn, sapling and supporters alike - are continuing to learn.
Last Saturday morning Yevgeniy donated a few hours of his time to teach us the proper sewing machine use. It is more complicated than you might think as the machines are quite sensitive and as opposed to say a dressmaking machine where most of the cloth is similar in weight, a sail-making machine can be set up to sew everything from half ounce nylon to heavy dacron, kevlar and canvas.
Of course a couple of the guys wondered if they could use it to fix their shorts :-). Thank you Yevgeniy for your help.
