Moving On Up to Big Boats
And Melges Wrap Up
September 14, 2010
Greetings!

We are getting a bit of every type of sailing condition here as summer tumbles into the fall series season, in which Oakcliff will be fielding teams.  The Ker 11.5 Peacemaker will be sponsored by John Brim for the Long Island Sound Championships this weekend and will be racing in the American and Manhassett Bay Fall Series.     Read below for more details.

Larchmont NOODs Wrap Up
Ralfie Smiling

Oakcliff Teams provided and dominated the Melges 24 fleet. Saturday was a fun day for tacticians with huge shifts, small puffs and big holes.  It was one of those days which  allows for big splits and gaps so if you were ahead you were nervous and if you were behind you were  hopeful.    Sunday was a completely different story with 20 knots and rain in the morning, dropping to 8 knots and rain for a brief period and then back up to 15 to 18.  By that point the seas had built enough and the downwind surfing legs were so fun no one cared if it was raining.   It was FUN!

Congratulations to everyone who sailed.  Kevin's team of Koko, Vlad and last minute additions of Larchmont star Andrew and 'Andrew's Dad' had a great regatta winning with scores of 1,1,1,3,1.  Jordan and his family, including a first time bow person were a solid second.  Kevin "Chip" McKeon with the Nelson brothers and Ann won a tough fight for 3rd as well as the admiration of us here at Oakcliff for sailing their boat home upwind straight from the race area. The next three teams led by Andrew Wills / Ralfie Steitz, Anthony Pulgram and John Baum pushed all the way through and improved every race.

American Spring and Manhassett Fall

We will field as many teams as we have qualified sponsors and team leaders for this fall's big boat regattas.  Currently it is looking like American will have both Farr 40s, the 50 and the 11.3 on the water and most of them still need crew. We ask that everyone who wants to sail (even if you've already spoken to a sponsor/skipper)  to sign up.

Ideally you are able to sail both weekends of a regatta.  American is September 25-26 and October 2-3.  There will also be classic racing on both of these weekends.

Manhassett is a little less subscribed at this moment but it is also further out October 16-17 and 24-25.  If you are keen to sail please sign up for Manhassett Fall Series.  There is no classic sailing on these weekends.

If you are interested in sponsoring a team please email race@oakcliffsailing.org
Match Racing's Fall Schedule

Oakcliff's Fall Match Racing Schedule is being squeezed into the remaining daylight.

Tuesday Drills

We are now starting the match racing drills on Tuesdays at 5pm.  For those who can't be here until the normal 5:30 we will shuttle you out to your teams.  It makes it even more imperative that you sign up so we know you are coming and that you call the cell 415 760 7642 if you can't make it.

Saturday Regattas
The Saturday Grade 5 regattas will continue the longest, all the way up until Thanksgiving although we may remove a couple from the schedule on the weekends that we are already double booked on classics and IRC.  Sign up at http:///www.oakcliffsailing.org under the 'sail with us' page.

Oakcliff Fall Invitational:
We have added an Oakcliff Invitational and again are trying to confirm it as a Grade 3.  It will be held Halloween Weekend.  It is likely that racing will be very close to the shore as many of the boats will be out of the harbor so viewing with a warm cider is a distinct possibility.  Requests for invitation can be filled out on line.

On a personal note, Manhasset Bay was my first really cool 'grown up' regatta.  I was in high school and flew on a 'jet plane' to sail on a Frers 45.  The owner ended up hiring me to run his boat for the next 4 years. That was in the day when I was making $150/week plus an unlimited phone card so I could call my boyfriend back home.  Who else remember the days of payphones and phone cards?  Some of our  acorn's  (Koko) don't even remember when we used paper and pens and mailed things with stamps!

Anyway they were fun times and I'm looking forward to more great racing and maybe there will be some from further afield than Long Island Sound who come and race with us.  Midwesterners? West Coasters?  Ready to sail?  Come to Oakcliff.

See you all soon,

Oakcliff Classic
The classic racing began last weekend and will continue through October 9th.  If you are a regular, don't forget to sign up.  If you have not sailed on one of these beauties you are really missing out.  It is also very civilized with a 12:30 meeting time and you are home for happy hour.

Lost and Found

We have a few items up at the front of the showroom which have been left over the summer.  If you are missing anything look there.  On the other hand we are missing some foul weather gear and some lifejackets.  Please check your cars and sailing bags to see if you might be 'storing' anything from Oakcliff.

Reminder we do have some foul weather gear to loan out but please put a sticky note with your name on the hook of the pair you borrow so we can remind you if you forget to return them.  Thanks!
