Ramping Up Towards Fall
IRC Melges
August 18 2010
Greetings!

Oakcliff has been out and about spreading the word across the country and it is working.  Just in this week we have received inquiries from an event in Florida wanting one of our coaches, a team in Pennsylvania who wants to come up here and train and multiple inquiries about sponsoring our IRC boats.  A lot of this is coming from the Great Lakes and Chesapeake Bay but in general there is good buzz reverberating around the docks.

Read on to be reminded as to how much is on tap here at Oakcliff for the remainder of the month and into the Fall.

Fundraiser & Harvest Regatta - Oct. 8 & 9
Club

Did you know that if we have all of our boats in all of our fleets out on the race course, we will have total 221 people on the water?  On October 9th at the Oakcliff Harvest Regatta we will attempt this feat.  Add in the visiting boats for the final day of the Classic Fall Series and we will have truly fulfilled one of our missions, which is to "Fill Oyster Bay With Sails".

The Friday night before, October 8th, in conjunction with the Mainstreet Association, we will be hosting a fundraiser.  The theme will be "A Bountiful Harvest". Local restaurants will provide food stations, there will be an auction, art show and the entertainment will feature some of our talented Oakcliff Supporters. Overall it is going to be a fun night in the Oyster Bay Town!   Tickets will be on sale shortly.

This is a great opportunity to make a weekend of it in Oyster Bay.  Bring friends and family to the fundraiser on Friday night and have them sail along with you on Saturday in the Harvest Regatta.  You might also want to start working on your team costumes. :-) I told you it is going to be a fun weekend!
Melges Clinegatta
Sheilds
Dave Perry's Clinegatta concept is spreading to fleet racing.  Oakcliff's Program Director Kevin Dooley ran a day of drills and practice last Sunday and will play host to a two day event next weekend, August 28 -29.  The Saturday will be another day of clinic and drills and Sunday the gloves come off and racing begins.

Saturday's practice will focus on starting tactics, spinnaker handling, and speed testing. Oakcliff will provide coaching and conduct organized drills designed to get the most of your teams day on the water. After practice all participants will be invited to attend a video de-brief and a casual evening social.

On Sunday teams will participate in an 'in-house' regatta. The skippers meeting is planned for 12pm with a first gun at 1pm. Expect multiple short course races until 4pm with a clinic de-brief to follow. Clinegatta participants will be well prepared to attend the Larchmont NOOD's on September 11-12th.

Please register your team and reserve a boat online ASAP. We will do our best to accommodate individual registrations, however full teams will receive priority.
Vineyard Race & IRC Practice
Peacemaker at AYC
The schedule for the IRC boats explodes again this Fall beginning with the Vineyard Race September 3rd, the Friday of the Labor Day Weekend.  John Mooney and family are sponsoring the Ker 50 and we are building a great team of sponsor team members as well as Oakcliff supporters.  One Farr 40 may also be racing.

IRC practice will be held this Sunday.  Anyone who would like to be considered to be a part of the teams aboard either boat must have either participated in the last Sunday practice or show up this Sunday at noon.    Even if you are not able to make the vineyard race or you don't make the team for this particular boat,  it is a great opportunity to receive coaching aboard the big boats.   There will be plenty of opportunities to test your skills as we race in the American Spring, September 25-26, October 2-3 and Manhasset Bay Fall Series, October 16-17 and 23-24.

Don't forget the Summer Match Race # 5 regatta this Saturday.

Finally looking further into the Fall, we will be doing some team-building events with New York Area organizations.  If anyone has a company or an organization who would benefit from this training feel free to contact us at the office.

Hope to see you soon at Oakcliff and keep your fingers crossed for the winds of September to blow from August through Thanksgiving.

Sincerely,

Dawn Riley

Sailing Rain or Shine
Rain or shine, all of our normal training continues through Fall and honestly it has been
 99% sun!

Wednesday night fleet racing we have the Shields available but we have also fleet raced the Match 40 which has turned into a spectacular crew training platform.

Thursday nights have continued to be blessed with good winds and gentle sunsets.  This is the only night that we meet at 5 instead of 5:30.

Tuesday night match racing drills are probably our most attended events and it has been great to see new match racers, jump in, be initially overwhelmed and shortly thereafter become hooked on match racing.

To sign up for any of the above events please go to:

A little bit of small print:

We ask that anyone who borrows a life jacket to return it to the front of the showroom.

If you need to borrow foul weather gear, make sure you put a post-it note with your name on the hook correlating to your gear so you remember where to put it back and if you forget we can call you and remind you :-).

You are responsible for damage outside of normal wear and tear but we only charge our cost and are happy to have you help in making the fix and further reducing the costs.

We ask that everyone brings their own refillable water bottles so we can reuse and reduce waste.  The same goes for bringing your own lunches/ snacks etc.   Everyone's efforts have resulted in a tremendous reduction in the waste at Oakcliff.

Thank You!
