One Match Race & Two Clinegattas

July 13, 2010
Greetings!

I'm not sure how we've gotten to Tuesday afternoon and I'm just sending the newsletter, however I've also realized that you all are becoming a little too dependent on it :-).    Let me take this opportunity to point out that you can always go directly to the calendar and sign up for any event at any time.  You just go tohttp://oakcliffsailing.org  pull down "Sail With Us" tab and go to the online calendar.  I will also try to get this newsletter out earlier as well.

One other request is for everyone to fill in their profile completely by answering all of the questions from when you first registered.  If you aren't sure if you did or not then just go back to http://www.oakcliffsailing.org and 'join our mailing list'.  You will be asked to enter your email address again and then instructions on how to update your profile will be emailed to you.

OK back to the fun stuff - the sailing.  We have a normal match racing regatta in Swedish Match 40s on Saturday,  followed by the youth Clinegatta and the Oakcliff Invitational on the subsequent weekends.

Volunteers on a boom
With two major events coming up we can use volunteers to help out with everything from umpiring to race committee, mark set boats to hosting events.

The Youth Clinegatta July 23-25
is attracting participants from as far away as New Orleans.  Come on and help us support the champion match racers of the future.

We can use the following on the water volunteers for Saturday and Sunday:
4 race committee members for the committee boat and mark set
2 umpires either certified or in training
1 person to do "Dave Perry Assist" for the duration Krik?
We also have at least 6 kids / young adults who are looking for housing.

The Oakcliff Invitational, July 28 - August 1st
is shaping up to be a really good event with teams from New Zealand, Finland and Denmark joining the five US teams.  The format is two days of clinic and three days of racing.

For this we can use a little more infrastructure assistance as well as the on the water help of:
3 race committee members for the committee boat and mark set Fri-Sun.
1 Dave Perry Assist for the duration.
1 Driver for Tomahawk which will be the crew change boat.
2 or 3 people on the host committee to help with umpire lunches, water, ice and snacks as well as a Saturday night BBQ.
And housing for up to 10 people.

If you are interested in helping out with any of these tasks please email race@oakcliffsailing.org
Umpire Workshop Report
The US SAILING umpire workshop led by Bruce Cook and hosted at Oakcliff Sailing Center last weekend was really good.  I have to admit to a little bit of trepidation as it was scheduled from 6 to 10 on Friday night, continuing Saturday morning.

After a long week I wasn't sure I'd be able to stay awake but as it turned out we were still there talking until nearly 11pm.  This was the first time that this very recently updated workshop was given and all reports are that it was a vast improvement over the past.

TV seminar

On Saturday, Bruce allowed us to open up the closing segment to those who were on site and we had a great discussion on the rules using the provided video.

There are four of us who will be sitting for our exam and hopefully we will be able to generate 4 newly qualified umpires in the near future.    I highly recommend that anyone else who might be interested in serving as an umpire take this workshop the next time it is offered.
Quick Report from Detroit
Bayview Yacht Club
The Ker 11.5 arrived at Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit on Thursday morning and Andrew arrived shortly thereafter and it was full steam ahead.  The boat was launched, rig up, winches back on, loaded with sails and ready to go by Saturday morning when the headed out to the race course on Lake St. Clair.    They managed to win by 5 minutes on corrected on a 5 mile course!  Nice work.

This weekend the boat will be headed up the river and competing in the "Pure Michigan Port Huron To Mackinac Race" on Lake Huron.  You can track the boats on this web site.  The 11.5 is sailing under the name Peacemaker  (I'll be on a boat called Nitemare).
Looking forward to seeing you at Oakcliff soon!
Sincerely,

Dawn Riley
