Hot Time in the City - Cool Times at Oakcliff

July 6, 2010
Greetings!

Yes it was 108 degrees at Oakcliff yesterday but the team still put in a full day keeping everything moving and maintained and organized and preparing for the month of match racing.  Ronnie and Vlad scrubbed the bottoms of all of the Match 40s, Aiden, Dylan and Kevin worked on race committee prep and Andrew and Maurice were in CT with the 11.5.

Andrew Wills and Colin Bunnell will soon be experiencing and learning from the sailing and sailors in the Midwest.  Ken Flaska, a lawyer from Detroit will be racing the Oakcliff 11.5 in both Mackinac's as well as the Harbor Springs Regatta.  The Mackinac's are legendary for being ... well inconsistent.

Some years it is a 90 degree sweltering 300 mile run.  Other years it is a 24 hour sprint.  Some years it takes 4 days and some years it snows.  The Oakcliff team has prepared the 11.5 for any and all conditions with special care being given to the safety equipment as the organizers take safety very seriously. Andrew loaded the boat and 60 foot mast onto the truck that in itself is an educational experience and then there was dealing with the trucking permits.

This month will be great training, some good racing and the best thing is when the wave washes over ... no salt!  As a matter of fact the water is clean enough one can just pull a cup out of the lake and drink away.  So many things to learn and experience.
Youth Clinegatta - Umpires & Youth wanted

The Oakcliff Sailing Center in Oyster Bay on Long Island is hosting a Youth Match Racing Clinegatta on July 23-25, 2010. On Friday, July 23, Dave Perry will be running a clinic, and then the Oakcliff is running a regatta on Saturday and Sunday, July 24 and 25. The Clinegatta will be sailed in Seawanhaka Yacht Club's Sonars. Our target age range is 16-22 years old.  Even though the deadline has passed we still have room for interested youths.  More information can be found on the web site.

 Umps
We need umpires for the regatta on July 24 and 25. And any umpires who can make it are welcomed to join us Friday, July 23 for the on-shore and on-the-water training sessions.

You do not need to be certified; this is a great opportunity to do some umpiring while providing an opportunity for young sailors to do some formal match racing. If you can make it any of the days please let us know at race@oakcliffsailing.org
Umpire Training
Ker 50 on her way to the racecourseBruce Cook will be running a US SAILING Umpire Workshop this Friday from 6 to 10pm and Saturday morning.  After which the umpires in training will have the option to make it out onto the race course and test out their new skills with the youth match racing clinic.  For more information email Bruce at: bacook@optonline.net

Stay cool and see you soon.
Sincerely,

Dawn Riley

This Weekend -
There is no formal sailing organized for adults as we will be busy with the youth but there are some options.  If anyone would like to volunteer to help Dave out I'm sure he can use the help.  Seawanhaka does not have a race on Sunday but if you let us know by noon on Friday we can organize a Shields for you to take out for a practice/cruise sail. Rules Corner

Rule 17
ON THE SAME TACK; PROPER COURSE
If a boat clear astern becomes overlapped within two of her hull
lengths to leeward of a boat on the same tack, she shall not sail above
her proper course while they remain on the same tack and overlapped
within that distance, unless in doing so she promptly sails
astern of the other boat.

Translation: you sail in to leeward it means you do not have 'luffing rights' so you can't 'take them to the moon' but you are entitled to sail your proper course and the windward boat is still required to keep clear as normal.
