Greetings! I should have sent this out yesterday but with the rain and cold I just didn't think anyone wanted to read about sailing. The good news is that it was a one-day glitch and the sun is out and the temps are rebounding and it looks like it is going to be a 'chamber of commerce' weekend.
Read on for more information but the two most timely pieces of information are that the Roosevelt Cup registration will be closing at 5pm today. If you have not signed up and are interested in sailing please do so by clicking here NOW.
Also, Sagamore Yacht Club's Wednesday night fleet races have started and will continue through September 22nd. Oakcliff has entered all 6 of our Shields for our supporters to sail.

Roosevelt Cup Pursuit Race - Enter NOW
|
This is a pursuit race which is a format used for many regattas such as the St. Barth's Bucket Regatta. The slower boats start first so theoretically, if all of the boats sailed perfectly to their rating they would all arrive at the finish line at the same time. This format allows for fun racing with a lot of passing. Oakcliff has entered the IRC fleet as well as two of the beautiful
classics, Nautilus and Dolphin. The default meeting time is 9am at 4 South Street although we may modify this tomorrow once the final start times are determined. In order to put together the best combination of crew we need to close the sign ups at 5pm today so please go to this link and sign up now. if you want to sail. Sailing Instructions and NOR can be found at: seawanhaka.orgThe Roosevelt Cup is hosted by Seawanahaka Yacht Club and the social events are sponsored by Mt. Gay and North Sails. It should be a lovely finish to a great and fun day of racing. |

Advanced Match Race Clinic a Success!!!
|
The Oakcliff Sailing Center's second annual Advanced Match Racing Clinic was held last week and was a great success. Sailors from around the U.S. and the British Virgin Islands participated, including Olympian Sally Barkow from Nashotah, Wisconsin and Colin Rathbun from Tortola. The four day intensive training session was led by US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics women's match race coach Dave Perry, currently the highest ranked US match racing sailor in the ISAF rankings. Perry led the six boats through a series of drills and exercises designed to improve the sailors' boat handling, speed and match race tactics. Specifically the teams had classroom sessions on the theories and moves of pre-start tactics, racing upwind and downwind, and killing penalties, did drills designed to practice Dial Ups and the final Lead/Push to the start, as well as racing around the track and dealing with penalties, and finished with actual races to put it all together. Part of the mission of the Oakcliff Sailing Center is to help raise the level of match racing ability in the U.S. This clinic served that mission well. "We had a sensational four days of information download" said Rathbun; "and we thank the Oakcliff Sailing Center, and all the coaches, volunteers and staff for making it possible. What was great was that we had an amazing set of sailors to measure ourselves up against." Match Racing occurs at the Oakcliff Sailing Center on a weekly basis throughout the spring, summer and fall. Sailors and umpires interested in participating can get information on the website: www.oakcliffsailing.org
