Storybooks For Healing

"Footprints on the sands of time are not made by sitting down."

Dear

2011. A New Year.

I'm declaring 2011 the year for action! Why not? Isn't a new year about making resolutions, saying good bye to what we want to leave behind to yesterday and giving ourselves permission for a fresh start? Doesn't the new calendar mark a tide of change with optimism and hope?

The New Year often means reflection on the past and making choices for the future by setting goals.  Goals are achieved by action. So I urge you to join me in making an action plan for your best 2011.

calendarDiscover, Publish, Share. These three action words are the SFH guide to everything we do to help you make meaning of your loss. Here are our resolutions for 2011:

SFH Helps You Discover: Look for more writing reflection opportunities through Facebook, Twitter, blog activities and the upcoming online SFH program. You choose your level of commitment in the format you enjoy.

SFH Helps You Publish: We're adding easy to complete photo and story projects so you take comfort in remembering your loved one in more projects than storybooks, and you can begin sharing your projects more quickly with family and friends.

SFH Helps You Share: Strangers becomes friends fast when you have a common bond and understanding. Through online communities so you can share project and discovery with family and friends in new ways, and we can connect local resources to you in every community.

Our big goal in 2011 is to offer the Storybooks for Healing program online so we can reach people, more  effectively. Sharing and exploring grief together is what helps people the most. By telling our stories and  hearing others we realize we are not alone. How about reaching out on your time, day or night, during any time zone? The tools of the internet are now available to provide safe, secure and personal interactions. We are excited to be working on bringing you a larger, stronger online community in 2011.

stepsSeven Steps for Behavior Changes

steps

Many of us make New Year resolutions, especially about health. So there is no surprise to find these seven steps to successful changes in a health magazine. Since behaviors are actions, you can apply these ideas to not only your physical health but your goals to overcome the stress of grief. Let Storybooks For Healing be your guide.

  • Before setting goals, develop a strategy. Look at obstacles that hinder you, and how they can be overcome. If you want to exercise four days week, but child care is a barrier, figure out who will watch the kids.
  • Set short-term and long-term goals. Long-term goals will motivate you, but short-term goals will get you there. A long-term goal might be reducing your intake of processed sugar to a specific gram level per day; your short-term goal could be to drink water instead of soda.
  • Set specific, measurable goals. Research says this will yield better results, and you'll be more likely to stick with your program. For example, a goal of walking 30 minutes on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday is much better than a vague "I will do more cardio."
  • Make goals process oriented, not outcome oriented. Setting a goal of doing cardio five times a week (process) often works better than a goal of losing 5 pounds (outcome).
  • Build in fun. If you want to exercise more, plan an activity that you enjoy.
  • Set realistic goals. Research shows that moderately difficult goals - those that are challenging but within your capabilities - work best.
  • Readjust. If you get sidetracked or need to change goals, cross out the old one and put in the new one.
