USICD Launches 2011 Membership Drive

In the past two years, USICD has grown in our capacity to support U.S. involvement in global disability rights issues.  Our education and ratification campaigns for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) have helped to raise awareness of the CRPD among lawmakers and the disability community.  The Global Disability Rights Library is now moving into its second year, with the first installations of the library to begin in the coming months in countries around the world.  And we anticipate 2011 will include a new level of activity by Disabled Peoples' International and Rehabilitation International, new advancement toward social inclusion around the world, and new steps to engage Americans with the global disability community.

In order to continue in these efforts and promote disability rights around the world, we need your involvement as a USICD member.

GDRL Logo

Washington, DC - The Global Disability Rights Library project announces a call for organizations to apply to receive a free digital Global Disability Rights Library (GDRL).  Applications are open to disabled people's organizations, universities, and agencies in developing countries.   Sixty organizations will receive the digital library to empower them to disseminate valuable disability rights knowledge and toolkits to their communities.

The project uses an innovative "internet in a box" technology to deliver digital resources to people beyond the reach of the internet.  Users will include disabled people's organizations (DPOs), decision makers, individual advocates, and others who cannot easily download information from the web.

Ideal deployment site candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to promoting and facilitating disability rights.  Successful applicants will have the organizational capacity to become a hub for disseminating disability rights information and will be inclusive of a diverse disability community.
