USICD Represented at 3rd UN Conference of States Parties to the CRPD
During the week of August 30-September 3, the 3rd Conference of States Parties to the CRPD was held at United Nations Headquarters in New York, bringing together governments and civil society, people with disabilities and their allies, in an annual international dialogue.  I represented USICD at this meeting, with credentialing made possible by USICD's status as the U.S. member organization in Rehabilitation International.  The week featured leaders calling for renewed commitment to the CRPD ratification and implementation, and exciting moments for the United States and close USICD allies.

A Message from the Executive Director

Dear ,

Last week, the Conference of States Parties (COSP) to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) was held at the United Nations.
I was honored to attend, and to be able to provide USICD members a few short updates as the conference took place. It is my goal that USICD members have a connection to global disability dialogues such as this, and that USICD can serve our members with information drawn from these events.

At the conference last week, it was inspiring to learn how disability advocates from around the world are providing leadership, in both the governmental and nongovernmental sectors, in efforts to implement the vision of the CRPD in their own countries. It's exciting to watch how international cooperation inspired by the CRPD is growing, building new bridges between peoples and infusing other aspects of international affairs such as poverty eradication, HIV/AIDS, and education for all.

USICD's commitment to U.S. ratification of the CRPD continues, and after joining with the global community last week I am more motivated than ever in this work. We will continue to seek new opportunities to provide CRPD education and raise awareness of the Convention in the U.S.  I hope you will join us for an advocates' teleconference on September 16 to discuss the status of U.S. ratification of the CRPD, share ideas in advocacy, and draw inspiration from our shared vision for the United States' role in the global disability community.

It is our members' investment in USICD that makes these efforts possible. As we enter the final months of the year, I hope you will consider renewing your membership in 2011, or if you are not member, consider joining yourself or your organization to our roster of members. I am always seeking new ways to return value to you for your membership support, such as this year's emailed dispatches from the COSP. I am always available to you to hear suggestions, to discuss our work and to be a resource.
