Mayor's State of the City Address This Tuesday, January 31, 2012
Mayor Dwight C. Jones delivered his annual State of the City address on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 6:30 PM.
The Address was held at Thomas Jefferson High School, located at 4100 West Grace Street.

Richmond Economic Development Authority Issues RFP for Jackson Ward Property

On January 20, 2012, the City of Richmond Economic Development Authority (EDA) issued a request for proposals to purchase and develop the vacant property located at the corner of 2nd and Marshall Streets, with the address of 200 East Marshall Street.
Based on an Urban Land Institute Technical Assistance study conducted on this property, recommendations for the redevelopment include that it be a mixed-use development primarily devoted to a limited service hotel, although other approaches will be considered. Southwest Airlines to Land at Richmond International Airport (RIC)

On January 20, 2012, the Richmond Times Dispatch reported that Southwest Airlines will be coming to the Richmond International Airport (RIC). Troy Bell, RIC's director of marketing and air services stated, "Southwest is really a game-changer. If you're a community that's focused on quality of life and economic development, you definitely want to be part of Southwest's route map."

Local Business Spotlight: Waller & Company Jewelers

Waller & Company is a family-owned jewelry store that has been in business for over 100 years in the city of Richmond. Founded in 1900 by M.C. Waller, the full-service African American retail jewelry store is now operated by Richard A. Waller, Jr., a watchmaker, master jeweler and grandson of the founder.
Located in the city-designated ArtBiz District at 19 East Broad Street, when interviewed, Waller indicates his interest in seeing the Broad Street corridor become a thriving retail district, "with a wide variety of shops, restaurants and enterainment venues to meet the needs and interests of shoppers."

City Receives $600,000 Revitalization Grant for Leigh Street Armory

On Tuesday, December 28, 2011, the City of Richmond was awarded a $600,000 Industrial Revitalization Fund (IRF) grant from the State towards the redevelopment of Leigh Street Armory, located at 122 West Leigh Street in historic Jackson Ward. The Armory will become the future new and expanded home of the Black History Museum. Mayor Dwight C. Jones thanked Governor McDonnell and stated, "Restoration of this will further advance the City's revitalization of Jackson Ward, which occupies a vital place in the social and economic history of African Americans. It will also enhance Richmond's ongoing efforts to expand tourism while developing our city's cultural offerings. Additionally, it will help give meaningful use to an architectural icon." Downtown Development Announcements Keep Coming

2012 kicked off with more exciting, new real estate deals, grand openings and developments. At the end of December, the Residences at the John Marshall opened its doors, restored to its former glory, but with a twist, offering luxurious apartment living as well as fine dining, special event space and ground level retail. On January 23rd, Richmond BizSense reported that the neoclassical First National Bank at 823 E. Main Street will be converted into 154 apartments as part of a $30 million project in downtown. Click here for additional details.
