Greetings! |
I hope you're well and enjoying the bonus minutes of daylight as the sun heads north toward spring and summer. So many are looking forward to spring after a very tough winter that they must be kicking up their heels, just like we are. I've been somewhat overwhelmed by the ongoing news about the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. It breaks my heart to see the widespread devastation, loss of life, and the human misery that's sure to linger for decades. Trying to comprehend what the survivors must be going through physically, mentally, and emotionally has proven to be an impossible task. On the flip side, I am truly amazed at the nobility of the Japanese people in the midst of this cataclysm that is causing so much human suffering. There is no looting or violence, behavior that is usually commonplace with these types of tragedies. The victims patiently take their place in line for the supplies they need and work feverishly to help each other through the day. I've seen so many selfless acts as the human soul seems to rise above the calamity and the despair. I don't claim to understand the purpose behind a natural catastrophe, but this event has confirmed something I've known for a long time: within any misfortune lies an opportunity for the greater good in all of us to shine. "Do not think of a painful experience as a dark time in your life. You emerge out of everything learning something or becoming a better person." ~Colleen Ho

Letters Sharing the Journey | Letter from Rebeckah, a new friend of Trust Your Journey:
Hi,
I'm sure you get lots of stories, and here is one to add to your mix...
I first found your shirts in the Thriftway grocery store on Vashon Island, Washington because they drew me in - I really liked the designs, the materials and the philosophy behind them.... so I got myself the "...anyone can start today...." black T... because I am on a new turn in the journey - just moved to Seattle in November to go to Graphic Design school after 10 plus years working in wilderness education with the National Outdoor Leadership School, and living in many different places, including Chilean Patagonia and Baja California.
Then, I had a friend who was looking for a black t-shirt, so I got one for her (she does diversity work with NOLS)....Then I have another friend who is on a journey doing research on women in US national parks (www.mihoaida.com), and so I decide she needs one too and sent it to her in California.... This was all just last December.
.... fast forward to January, and I sent you a card (with Japanese snow cranes that symbolize longevity) because I liked the idea of your postcards, but wanted to write more. I then find out a friend of my cousins (who I'm living with on Vashon) just got diagnosed with breast cancer, and is getting a double mastectomy the following week.... I decide that she needs a t-shirt too - we get her a pink one. She loves it.
The following week I was getting a biopsy done (surgery) on my left breast because I had an abnormal mamogram last year.... well, on MLK's birthday, 17 January my surgeon calls me to tell me I have cancer - go figure. Fortunately, it was found early - so the tumor is small. I will be having another surgery on 10 February - next Thursday, and will continue with radiation and drug therapy after that.
I have another friend who is doing amazing work with kids, (Lara Mendel: www.mosaicproject.org), and I wanted her to have one too, so I sent her one in California (she wanted purple). Talking with my friend Miho, when she got the t-shirt (she loves it too), she had the idea that we should all wear out TYJ t-shirts on the day of my surgery....
soooooo, this is finally where the order comes in - I went back to the grocery store because I had two more friends I wanted to include in that idea... but the store selection was low, so I found you online and ordered more t-shirts from there.
We all LOVE the t-shirts - the material, the colors, the designs, the idea behind it, and the idea of trusting where you are and where you are going.... as long as you are true to your heart.
So, it's nice to meet you, although virtually. Thank you for your positive light, Carry on! All the best, Rebeckah
(TYJ Special Note: If you want to share a part of your journey with others and we post it in a newsletter or on our website, we will send you a special Trust Your Journey gift. Just email your story to
