The stores are packed with people, but the shelves are bare of batteries, flashlights and water! What does all of this have to do with weight loss? Nothing. In fact, I'm sure that's the last thing on your mind, if you're working around Mother Nature, a stalled refrigerator and useless electric stove! This week I ask you to change your mindset. Weight loss is not something you do on the side. It is not a punishment. It is not a hobby. It is not really even about weight loss. It is about changing your thinking and behavior. When you do, you will see that come rain or shine or hurricane, you will be all the better and slimmer for it.

Ridiculous as it sounds, I know some of you were kind of hoping that Berta had found the Holy Grail! Well, I have, but it's not the Grail you're after! And I can assure you that if I ever find the one you're waiting for, I'll be shouting from the rooftop for all to hear. That being said, you can safely keep your windows closed for the time being!
The truth is that many of us have spent hard-earned money and precious time trying all kinds of incredible weight loss products. The sad part about this-other than the part where you lost weight and regained it, or didn't lose weight at all, or got sick, or died-is the toll the fads take on your psyche. Every time you fail to achieve the results promised by the pushers of miracle pills and fat burning devices, your waistline grows along with your depression.
So what's the answer? Very simply, me! I say that with some humor, but also with total earnestness. I know my plan works; I see the results every day. That's why I write these newsletters! I want to convince you all that it is absolutely possible to lose weight and to maintain the loss. Sure, you have to put in some time and effort, but try to wrap your head around the fact that this can be the first time you attain success and the last time that you have to do it! If you follow some simple rules and let go of the fantasy that there will one day come a miracle cure for excess weight, you will be where you want to be in a matter of time!
Listen very carefully for a minute or two. Losing weight and keeping it off takes less effort than your head is telling you. Once you get out of your own way, you can soar. Think about it like this for a moment: the only thing standing in the way of the perfect body for you is...you! Not anyone else! No one is at fault any longer! Nobody is stopping you from losing weight! No one is forcing you to eat foods you don't want to eat! If you think I'm wrong, if you are perhaps annoyed by my suggestion that you are the problem, then you really have to stop and look at your life. If you look upon your body with shame and disgust, you have to begin to understand that the only person at fault is you. I'm sorry, but until you make the commitment to yourself, to losing weight, nothing can change. However, once you do so, the rest is simply a matter of time, relatively speaking. The more consistent you are in living each day with your goal in mind, the closer you will come to achieving it. Week by week, you will experience a different body and a different mindset.
Every day I am treated to very creative "excuses." These heartfelt excuses are really lies told and believed by very intelligent people who are rationalizing their refusal to make an honest commitment to themselves and their health. Why do they conjure their elaborate self-delusions? Simply put, they are afraid. Afraid of the time it will take and the torture they will have to endure as they deprive themselves of the things they love. What they don't realize is that they can choose to make a small mental shift and look at things differently.
No matter how much or how little weight you wish to shed, try to stop thinking negative thoughts. Rather, try to envision how you will look and feel, not only when you reach your goal, but every week leading up to that glorious day. That's right! The process of losing weight is actually fun when you're committed and on track. As you experience the joy of zipping the previously unzippable, you will realize that nothing, and I mean nothing, ever tasted as good! If you haven't tasted that nectar yet, you owe it to yourself to stay on track, take it easy, and follow some of my tried and true practices that will help you through any day of the week, free from fear and doubt!
This week, perhaps you might devote some time to reflection, to getting to know your true self. Treat that self with compassion and words of encouragement. The path you're travelling is not so very well paved, but there is the proverbial pot of gold at the end!
Go for it. Just Lose It!

My Favorite Foods!
The Perfect Storm
makes 10 to 12 servings
In preparation for Hurricane Irene, I thought I would clean out the refrigerator and see what I could come up with, since we're bracing for a week without electricity. I found lots of great fruit and tried this salad. It will be perfect for dessert or a snack when you just have to have a little something!
Enjoy!
What you need:
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 cup guava jelly
- 1 orange, grated zest
- 1/2 cupwater
- 2 tablespoons rum
- 8 cups fruit, cubed (such as pineapple, mango, orange, banana, papaya, lychee, watermelon, melons)
- dried shredded coconut.
What to do:
- Combine sugar, guava jelly, orange zest, and water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil and boil 1-2 minutes.
- Strain and cool, then stir in the rum.Arrange cubed fruits in a serving bowl.
- Pour the cooled guava mixture over the fruit and gently toss to mix using a wooden spoon.
- Chill until ready to serve.
- Garnish with dried coconut.
