Just Lose it with Berta Newsletter Volume II Issue 4 01/27/2011
Hi
This week has been an interesting one with all of us on the East Coast a little bit out of sorts, unaccustomed to so much snow and schedules thrown by the snow days! I know for certain that a curve ball (or, in our case, a snowball) to the schedule is all it takes to put our weight loss program on the skids! Many of my clients and readers have admitted to not feeling very good about themselves. The end of January is here and many have yet to get on track, leaving them feeling guilty and ashamed. I want you to know that it is perfectly normal to feel this way. There is a great deal of self-imposed pressure to begin (again) at the first of the year, and many feel terrible guilt when they just can't get it together. They feel like failures before they even begin.
In all truthfulness, you know you can lose weight-until something comes up that leaves you frustrated or feeling restricted by your "diet," unable to go out and have fun. Instead of understanding what you are experiencing-a big part of the process-you go straight into guilt mode and throw in the towel! Please try to remember what weight loss is supposed to look like! You go down a bit and stay there. When the feeling comes up and you are rejuvenated, you go down some more, and you stay there. If you think that maintaining your weight between drops isn't important, then you are missing a huge part of this puzzle and will get frustrated.
Stop beating yourself up! Stop feeling guilty! Begin to understand the process, and if you are in that maintenance time, just hang in there and don't do anything destructive! You just aren't at goal yet! Stop giving up and finally break this cycle! Maybe today?
To help you out, I have reprinted a "Tea Time" that I wrote about a year ago. In it, I give you one of my favorite tricks to get from one meal to the next, especially when feeling particularly edgy. Check it out, and let me know if it works for you, as well.
Did You Know, that a sluggish, toxic body can make you crave bad foods that tire you and lower your ability to persevere, making it harder to lose weight? Well, check out part one of a two-part series on detoxifying your body!
Lastly, for my Favorite Foods, I share a hearty, spicy recipe. I hope you enjoy a little spice in your life! If not, you can still make this dish-just omit some of the zingier spices.
Don't forget to keep in touch with me on Facebook at Just Lose It with Berta! I love to hear your feedback, and I know everyone else will, too.
Enjoy your read!

Tea Time with Berta
Tea Time is Me Time!
Here is a tip to help you through the harder moments of the day. It might sound too simple to be effective, but I can guarantee that it will do the job.
It's a fact of life: there is one particular time, every single day, for every one of us, when resisting the temptation to snack is a bit more challenging than it is the rest of the day. For most of us, this occurs in the late afternoon when we feel a bit hungry and are beginning to wander around the kitchen, perhaps thinking about what to prepare for dinner. If you're like most of my clients, you probably find yourself staring into that refrigerator forgetting about the family meal and just thinking that it all looks sooo good! Well, here is a little something you can do to squash the impulse to eat: have a cup of tea. That's right, a cup of tea-decaffeinated, please. If you're not usually a tea drinker, take the opportunity to explore the herbal tea isle at your local grocery store. Allow an exotic flavor to entice you into suspending your out-dated thoughts about the joys of tea. These are not your grandmother's teas, girls! A cup of tea (or the equivalent) is the perfect snack. It is relaxing, amazingly flavorful and will satiate your desire to make a bad food choice, perhaps eating something that might fill you up. Remember, we want to approach our meals hungry enough to eat well and wisely. If we fill up before dinner, we tend to skip the meal, become hungry later on and then wind up going to bed full. For a more complete discussion about going to bed full, see my blog on "Consistency." If you are really proactive, you might even plan for that afternoon slump, thus avoiding all problems with food. Simply decide ahead of time to take 10-15 minutes for yourself at whatever time the slump usually hits. Prepare a cup of tea, and then, really go to hell with yourself and actually sit with your feet up and enjoy the fantastic aroma and flavor of your new, favorite beverage! You might even treat yourself to a good read, if I might be so presumptuous! You will be amazed at how rejuvenated you feel afterward. It wouldn't surprise me if you began to look forward to the witching hour because now...
Tea time is Me time!

Did you know...
that the body's natural system of cleansing it itself of toxins and waste is being thwarted by the person walking around in it? Are you also aware that a healthy, well-balanced, detoxified body is a body that has more energy, more ambition, and glowing skin, to boot? It does not ache with joint pain, nor does it crave foods that do not contribute to its health. This might not be news to many of you who have dealt with all kinds of physical imbalances, including weight loss, by the way. However, you might not know exactly how the body rids itself of poisons, and why yours might need a bit of help to do the job right. So, today, let's talk about just that!
The human body is in a constant state of cleansing, ridding itself of toxins and waste. Although this should be a very natural and easy process, your body has nearly about had it! The foods we choose to consume have made the job of cleansing almost more than the body can handle on its own!
Here is a brief, simplified overview of the major players in the clean-up game along with a look at the symptoms presented by a body that is out of balance.
Your Lymphatic System is basically a trash collector. The lymph cell is a milky white blood cell that moves around the body. When it passes through one of the many lymph nodes in the body, toxins are filtered out from the lymph. This is where infections are fought and poisonous material is also prevented from going back into the bloodstream.
Symptoms - A toxic lymphatic system can result in colds and flu, puffiness and dark circles under the eyes, cellulite, and an overall feeling of fatigue.
The Liver deals with basically everything that comes into the body. It cleanses the blood of poisonous substances, such as alcohol and pesticides that might build up in your bloodstream. It actually absorbs them, changes them chemically to make them water soluble, and then excretes them into the bile (a kind of nasty greenish-brown fluid). The bile carries this waste away from the liver to the intestines to be excreted.
Symptoms - A toxic liver might result in bloating, nausea, indigestion, and even a furred tongue.
The Intestines break down and also absorb food and water into the bloodstream before excreting the waste from digestion and liver metabolism. This process should occur quickley, generally from 7-14 hours after eating.
Symptoms - Toxic intestines present as constipation and gas.
The Skin is the body's largest organ. People tend to forget this. The skin can be a great indicator of what might be amiss within our bodies. Sweating skin allows the sebaceous glands to remove toxins that might not otherwise be released.
Symptoms - Toxic skin might appear blotchy, with blackheads, cellulite, whiteheads, or pimples.
The Kidneys filter our blood and produce urine; they also remove the toxins and waste created by the breakdown of proteins. The kidneys are also responsible for the body's acidic level and the water level. They also replace any nutrients that need to be recycled back into the body.
Symptoms - Toxic kidneys result in dark-colored, cloudy, strong-smelling urine that might come with or without pain when urinating. Urine should be as clear as water, especially in the daytime when you are drinking water constantly!
Lastly, we have the Lungs. The lungs are made up of millions of tiny air sacs. When we breathe, oxygen enters the blood and the waste products of respiration, which is carbon dioxide and water, are removed. The lungs also have to deal with a lot of airborne pollutants, like carbon monoxide from cars, nicotine from cigarette smoke, and formaldehyde from building materials and fabrics!!
Symptoms - Toxic lungs cause inflamed mucous membranes, runny nose or constant sneezing, clogged sinuses.
There you have a brief synopsis; not enough to get you through medical school, but enough to be helpful, I hope. You might wonder why I would think that this information is germane to a weight loss site. Well, I think that if we feel good, if we're healthy, then we will tend to care more about what goes into our body. We will be more likely to work to maintain our good health, avoiding substances that can make us toxic, substances like certain processed foods, sugars, fats, caffeine and so on.
How we feel physically is connected to our emotional state of mind. It is hard to pinpoint the exact degree to which physical health influences our sense of well-being, but I find that the majority of women and men who come to see me come not for only weight loss, but also because they want to get healthier and stay that way. Tuning into what our body is telling us is a perfect way to begin eating in a cleaner, healthier way.
In the upcoming weeks, I shall be adding more information on how you can easily detoxify certain organs. The better your understanding of the hows and whys of cleansing, the better you will feel, and your body will thank you!

My Favorite Things to Eat!
Yellow Chickpea Lentils with Long Squash
Lentils have always been my favorite, and many of you are reporting that they have become yours, as well! Well, they are a good habit to develop. The lentils in this recipe are a bit different, but just as delicious. Yellow Chickpea Lentils are a perfect protein to eat for either lunch or dinner. They are high in fiber and low in fat. You will satisfy your taste buds and your appetite, as this dish leaves you feeling full and complete. This is an Indian meal so it is a little spicy; if you are not into spicy foods, just omit the spices that make you sweat!
Enjoy!
What you need:
1¼ cups chana daal (yellow hulled chickpea lentils)
4 to 5 cups cold water
1 teaspoon ground turmeric
1 teaspoons salt, or to taste
2 to 4 small red chili peppers (optional)
2 cups (approximately 1 pound) kudoo* (if you can't find this try any light green squash, like bottle squash or zucchini), peeled and chopped into 1½" dice
For the sauce:
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2" piece ginger, minced
Pinch of toasted cumin seeds (optional)
1 small tomato, chopped (optional)
1 green chili pepper, seeded and chopped
½ teaspoon garam masala (optional)
What to do:
Put the chana daal (chickpea lentils) and water in a large pot. Bring to a rolling boil and skim the foam and discard. Add the turmeric, salt (optional), and chili peppers. Cover and cook over medium-low heat for 15 minutes. Add squash and continue to cook for 45 more minutes, stirring occasionally.
To make the sauce:
Heat a medium pot and add the oil. Add the onion and sauté until transparent. Add the garlic, ginger, and cumin and stir-fry until the onions are lightly browned. Add the tomato and some chopped green chili pepper and fry for two or three more minutes.
Pour the daal mixture into a serving dish and top with the sauce. Stir.
