Just Lose It with Berta Newsletter Volume 1 Issue 45
11-11-2010
Hello
Hi everyone and welcome back! I have decided to go about this e-zine a bit differently. Happily, my readership has increased exponentially, so I have decided to reprint some readers' favorites! Many of you have not read or don't remember these older postings, and I find myself constantly referring you back to them, so I thought it might be a good idea to revisit them!
I often speak about addictions, and how overeating is no different than any other form of addiction. I start off "Tea Time" this week with a link to "Grant me Strength" in which I specifically speak about the direct connection with food and addictive personality issues. Perhaps you'll see yourself in this one?
I also have included other posts that have moved many of you. "Our Shame" speaks directly to the bingers in the group. It was a difficult piece to write, and I hope you take the time to read what might be just what you need to hear to get you past your next one.
"Commitment" talks about a struggle we all have to face. If Commitment has eluded you, this might be the one to read today.
I have also included "Inspiration." This is one of my favorites; please read and see why.
I have included another of your favorites in the"Favorite Foods" sections. I just had to bring the Chia Seed Pudding recipe back! Many of you have missed this gem, or have perhaps not yet tried it. Treat yourself to a two-thumbs-up favorite!
You might notice that I have omitted the "Did You Know" section since there is plenty to read this week.
I hope you enjoy your time with me this week, whether you are reading for the first or the 45th time!
Have a great week!

Tea Time with Berta:
Serenity Prayer
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
I have spent almost an entire year writing to help you through the tough days, weeks, and months you have experienced as you work toward reaching your goal weight. Today I thought I should mention, once again, that one problem will always remain. You see, after your scale registers the magic number, you will still feel within yourself a sense of emptiness, a need to strive for something else. You will search for an illusive something, albeit you'll search in a fabulous body, making the journey more fun, but you will still be on a journey. If you think that losing weight and getting healthier will bring an end to your struggles, you are laboring under a delusion. In the last 44 weeks I have frequently written about addictions, and I think it might be helpful for my old and new readers to visit (Give me strength) and reflect on how this overeating thing has a lot more to do with an "addiction": an impulse to substitute a substance for something missing, not from your life, but from your heart. Yes, we will always search our heart for something that will make it all okay, for something that will fill us with joy, peace, and happiness, and when we don't find it, when we are alone and can't fake it, then we reach for our drug of choice. For those reading this newsletter, the drug of choice is mostly food; for others, it's alcohol; and for others, it's stronger drugs, sex, money, work, or exercise (wouldn't that be a shame!). But what we all have in common is the search for something to quiet the unrest that bubbles within us. Therefore, today I invite you to visit my blogs and take a look at the posts many readers described as profound and touching. I thank you for continuing to read my work and for being my inspiration! I hope that I have returned the compliment with my words and the profound sense of responsibility I feel towards all of you. Enjoy "Our Shame" was very hard for me to write, and it appeared to have touched many of you as well.
This was one of the hardest things that I had to achieve in my life; without it I would have been lost. Commitment
"Just" A little four letter word I call myself.
Leveling Up - A continuation on the above addiction piece.
Inspiration I wrote this because I wanted to share with you what inspires me, perhaps it will help you too.
Finally, here is the complete Serenity Prayer. It has inspired and given strength to many who have been lost. It is a beautiful reminder that this life is hard, but at the same time beautiful and worth living.
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to
change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is,
not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make things right if Isurrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
And supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

My Favorite Things to Eat!
Chia Seed Pudding
Chia Seed Pudding!! It's an amazing food, and I want to explain why and then tell you how to prepare it. Yes, if you're wondering, it's the infamous chia pet debuting a second time, now as an amazing super food!!
My friends and juice-cleans gurus Mary and Ruth gave me this recipe from Accordance Cleanses.
Chia seeds are tiny black, white and gray seeds native to Mexico. Chia seeds have been consumed as a staple food by Aztecs along with corn, beans and amaranth. What makes them so special? They are loaded with Omega 3 fatty acids-much more than salmon per gram. They are also rich in antioxidants, dietary fiber and protein.
Chia seeds and Agave nectar (a natural sweetener that does not raise glucose levels) are easy to find in any health food store. Chia Seed Pudding looks and feels like rice pudding but has its own unique taste.
You will need: 1/4 cup chia seeds* 1 cup almond milk (I prefer that, but you could also use coconut milk, soy milk, or water) 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla extract** 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger Agave (a plant-based sweetener derived from the agave cactus) Raisins or other dried fruit (I prefer it without the dried fruit) Sea salt-a very little if you have to. (It tastes fine without the sea salt, and if you are prone to water retention, skip it!)
*You can adjust the ratio of chia seeds to liquid to get the consistency you like. **You can also add other flavors to create the taste you like-experiment and be creative! Perhaps some blueberries?
What to do:
Mix all ingredients together making sure the chia seeds are moistened. Cover and refrigerate 1-2 hours until set. You might need to mix it up a few times while you are waiting for it to set.
Don't get nervous when you finally see what it looks like. It mostly looks like a bunch of fish eggs and is surprising at first glance, but I assure you it is delicious and amazing for you! You can make it at night, stick it in the fridge, and by morning you can eat it for breakfast. If it thickens too much, just add a little more almond milk and stir. This will fill you up and satisfy not only your taste buds, but also your nutritional requirements.
Bon Appétit!

If you can say Yes! I am ready to get started! this is the link to the blog page that will explain how to go about doing it. You don't have to read it all in one sitting! Please take your time, absorb my words, and when you fully understand where I intend to take you, read on. The journey we will take together might be a long one, but it promises to be unforgettable. The first step is committing to yourself. From there, you will begin the work of finally identifying why you are where you are, and how you got there. The moment you can honestly own your personal truth, you will have reached your goal. The rest is simply a matter of time.
Enjoy the ride!
