Hello !

Hi everyone and welcome back. To all of the new arrivals, I welcome you to our community!  I have added many new e-zine subscribers recently, and I would like to thank all of you who have been  promoting me  and forwarding my e-zine to your friends. I have received lots of letters from people I have never met, and I am encouraged as I work to be the inspiration you need to stay the course!

As I  mentioned last week, there have been a few changes here as I explore many interesting new ventures.  I wanted to take a moment to share with you my vision for my website and what I hope it will become for you.  When it is finally up and running, I hope that it will be a great resource where you can receive online support as you continue your weight loss journey.  I  plan to have a 24 hour chat room that will be exclusive to members of the Just Lose It community.  There will be scheduled times when I will be logged on in order to offer you one-on-one support.  At other times, some of my former clients who are logged on will be available to share their success stories and help you over whatever hurdle you might be facing that day. In the event that my friends and clients are unavailable, my hope is that you will support and share with one another in order to get through a difficult time-day or night.

There will also be plenty of inspirational weight loss stories from women who have worked with me in the past.  I plan to continue offering amazing recipes, as well! Most importantly, I will be there to offer my wholehearted support as you take this journey back to yourself.  I'll be there to show you how to persevere by seeking and embracing the authentic you!

Lastly there will be a few e-books and audio segments that you can download and enjoy immediately. Also in the works is a weekly video message from yours truly.  Needless to say, I am very excited about my not-so-distant future prospects!

Meanwhile, in this week's e-zine I speak about the state of your home and how it might impede your ability to lose weight and remain in a state of peace.  The "Did You Know" segment goes into a bit more about Omega -3 fatty acids and why it is imperative that you get enough of these necessary dietary supplements. I will tell you where to go, from animal to plant, to get your daily requirement.   In "Favorite Foods" you will find a recipe that is just in time for cooler evenings.  This week's new recipe is a delicious Lima Minestrone soup.

I would still love to hear from all of you, new and old. You can either respond to this email address, or you can go to Just Lose It Blog where you will find a link to leave a comment.  However, to be honest,  I would prefer to turn my Facebook page into a more interactive forum for sharing. I see myself offering support, answering questions, and guiding those who might be having a hard time figuring out what to do next. I would also love to hear what you think about my future plans!

Hope to hear from you soon!

Enjoy the e-zine, and have a great week!

Fall Cleaning!

Many years ago, my younger sister made an observation that I found less than insightful. In fact, I found it quite offensive. That should have been a red flag, since we tend to become offended when confronted with a truth we would prefer to ignore! At any rate, my sister stopped by one morning, and taking in the state of my house, with my three young sons' toys strewn about and the parts of whatever project I was working on covering every surface, she quite deliberately walked over to my closet, opened it and said,  "Wow! Look at the mess in this closet! What in the world must the inside of your head look like?"

Instantly, I went off on my defensive spiel about the ridiculous hours I had been working and the impossibility of staying on top of the chaos the kids created  and I was doing it alone and it was more than any one person could possibly do without help and NO I didn't like the way my closets looked, but that is not who I am and do you really think that the state of my closet  represents or defines me in any way?  Well, do you??

By the time I was done, even I could see that the lady didst protest too much! Needless to say, the incident got me thinking.  I certainly was not about to admit to my sister-or anyone else, for that matter-that everything I had said was an excuse. While I was a single parent, and I was working a lot, those really weren't the reason my closets, and the rest of my house looked as cluttered as it did.  I knew that it was me, that something was off in me, and I protested as I did because she saw right through me, and I was ashamed.  Plain and simple.

So, once again, I am talking about something other than food, but not really.  In the  last few weeks this theme has come up with one client after another. As we talked, they came to realize that when they are off, it is usually because things are out of place. This causes them to feel unsettled and that feeling makes them nervous and uncomfortable. Naturally, they soothe these feelings with food.  This week, when we began to address emotional states, I asked each client about her home-her closets to be exact-and low and behold, they all had plenty of cobwebs and skeletons lurking in there!  Without hesitation, each of them started the process of cleaning those closets!

I love the strategy of closet cleaning because it distracts us from eating, but it works on other levels, as well. And it's so true that there is a  correlation between a chaotic, disorganized living space and a sense of unbalance and disconnect.  Not only that, but I always detect a sense of defensiveness when I kind of push clients to assess this aspect of their lives, as if the closets are some dirty little secret.

Harriet has been coming to me for some time now, and she has been doing great with her weight and her inner transformation.  However, she has an issue with her professionally decorated home. While proud that the house could be featured in House Beautiful,  Harriet has a secret: Harriet feels uncomfortable in her own home because she knows that the perfect first floor living space is not reflective of who she truly is. The real Harriet is reflected in the closets and her bedroom, her inner private places. You see, these spaces are cluttered and messy with stuff that she neither needs nor wants. But she knows these spaces represent what she really feels inside, and she is ashamed of that person and so keeps her  hidden. Sure, to the rest of the world hers is the perfect home, but she feels that she is  living a lie, the same lie I lived many years ago.

Maybe you're like us? I know I kept people out of certain rooms and nobody ever got a look into my closets. The attic, the basement, the kitchen drawers, and my bedroom were totally off limits.  You see, if anyone saw these spaces, they would know that I was not okay. Just as Harriet is afraid that someone might infer from her hidden places that she is not okay, that she is off.  These off limits places  represent who we are on many levels. They illuminate what we are hiding.  Having spaces that are cluttered leaves us feeling irritated and uncomfortable, as if someone might see that we are not perfect.  Isn't that what we are hiding behind those doors?  Fear? Fear that someone might see that we are flawed, and fear that they might leave us if they learn the truth? Isn't that what hides there?  Our facade wavers but there it is, behind our doors, in the back of our consciousness, we are cluttered, we have cobwebs growing and rather than clean them up, we choose to close a door and put a huge Keep Out sign on the knob.

Well, I have an easy solution!  Clean out your closets!  It will make you feel better than  you can imagine. If a closet isn't the problem, then maybe it's a drawer, the attic, basement, or bedroom.  Whatever you are hiding, just clean it out!  I am tired of hiding  behind my closed doors, tired of keeping everyone out, and when they see everything that I am hiding and they choose to leave, well then they clearly didn't really know me, and I would rather be with people who know me. I would rather spend my time knowing myself.  So, I clean out my closets when I get the urge to eat, when I don't know what to do with my time off.  It makes me feel balanced and grounded.  And when I am both balanced and grounded, I feel better about what I eat and about my body and myself.  I feel proud to have the spaces that I have, meaning that I am proud of who I am, that I like myself and that I have nothing to hide.

So, let's do some fall cleaning and open those doors and air out those spaces.  You will feel  grounded; you will feel  at peace; you will want to embrace that peace in your mind and that will help you stay on track and eat well.

Try it and let me know how it goes. You might be surprised at how you feel, and at the very least, you will have very clean closets and spaces, and the relief of not having to hide any longer will be worth the couple of hours that it will take.

Enjoy

Did you know...

that being deficient in essential fatty acids can cause many adverse physical and mental symptoms?  Some of those symptoms may be acne, changes in personality or behavior, gallbladder dysfunction, slow healing of wounds, cardiovascular problems, prostate inflammation, thirst due to excessive perspiration, arthritis, miscarriage, poor growth, kidney problems, muscle tremors, skin disorders, and sterility in males!

Does that list seem crazy to you?  Well, what is crazy, in my book, is that so many people  suffer regularly from these symptoms, and there could be a very simple fix: take in more essential fatty acids!  Here is the funny thing: most of you avoid the foods that contain essential fatty acids because they are high in calories and high in fat, and you have been taught to avoid all fat.  Therefore, many of you refuse to ingest something that is essential to your health and well being because you do not understand that these are good fats!  These fats help bring down our cholesterol, they help keep our appetites down, they keep our internal and external organs lubricated, they help the brain function and develop, they help the body manufacture hemoglobin,  they help wounds heal, they help our glands and hormones to function, they increase the rate at which the body burns fat, they help the body maintain proper temperature, they protect the heart, they lower triglyceride levels, they help eradicate plaque from the walls of arteries, they help lower blood pressure, they help repair old cell membranes and construct new ones, they help strengthen cell and capillary structures, they nourish the immune system, and help control inflammation in the body!  Wow, that is pretty amazing!  It's almost unbelievable what these fatty acids can do, and it is equally unbelievable that we don't get enough of them, considering what happens when we are deficient in them.

Here is an amazing fact: your body craves these good fats because it needs them to survive, but you are unable to differentiate between the good fats and the bad ones.  So, when you are craving fatty foods, you go for what you know and what is most immediately available without realizing that what your body is really asking for are Essential Fatty Acids. Instead you give your body saturated fats and you feel unsatisfied. Of course since you are not satisfied,  you keep eating until you feel satisfied, or perhaps serendipitously get the good fats that you
unknowingly craved in the first place .  In short, if you give your body foods that are rich in the good fats, then you will not crave the bad fats any longer. Easy concept, right?  Please do not shy away from the word fat!  "Essential fatty acids" are just that, essential to helping you feel young, healthy, vital and slim!

Here are a few sources of Essential Fatty Acids:
These fats are found in both plants and animals, although mostly in plants.  These fats come in two forms, Omega 3 and Omega 6's.
Omega 3
The  most common form of Omega3's are called eicosapentaenioic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and alph-linolenic acid, which comes from plants and helps create EPA and DHA.  Omega 3 usually comes from fish oils.
Omega 6
The most common form of Omega 6 is gammalinolenic acid (GLA).
Some facts about  GLA:
1. Helps facilitate weight loss in overweight persons, but not in people who do not need to lose weight.
2. Reduces platelet aggregation (or abnormal blood clotting)
3.  Helps reduce symptoms of depression and schizophrenia.
4.  Alleviates premenstrual syndrome symptoms.
5.  May help alcoholics overcome their addiction.
Omega 6's are usually found in plant sources.  The oils of cold water fish, like salmon, bluefish, herring, tuna, mackerel.  Also, the fresh pressed oils from raw seeds and nuts contain Omega 6's.

The most popular sources for both Omega 3's and Omega 6's are:
Black Current Seed Oil  -Omega 3
Borage Oil - Omega 6
Salmon Oil - Omega 3
Flax seed Oil - Omega 3, Omega 6, and Omega 9 (a non-essential oil)
Evening Primrose - Omega 3 and Omega 6

These are all amazing and are must be a included in our daily diets.  Please get over the fact that they are fats because they are the kind we need!  Just add some Omega 3 and Omega 6 to your diet and see  how great you will begin to feel!

My Favorite Things to Eat!

Lima Minestrone
serves 6
lima minestrone

With the weather starting to turn a bit cooler, I start thinking of food that is a little bit heartier but tasty and rich enough to satisfy your fall taste buds.  This is a nice soup that might even satisfy the meat eater in you!

One of the reasons for including these recipes is to nudge you in the direction of seeing and tasting that there are a lots of foods out in the world that will satisfy your taste buds, end your cravings and emotionally fulfill you.

I hope that this is one you will enjoy!

What you need:

2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
1 cup chopped onion
3 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 cup white wine
6 cups Roasted Vegetable Stock (Trader Joe's has a nice low sodium one)
2 cups of water
2 tsp. chopped fresh rosemary or 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
1- 1/2 cups fresh or frozen lima beans
1 red bell pepper, seeded and cut into 1-inch julienne strips
2 cups corn kernels
1 tsp. salt (or less!) or ( a salt alternative)
1 squeeze lemon juice
1 or 2 dashes balsamic vinegar
Fresh-ground black pepper

What to do:

1.  In a stockpot or large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat.  Add the onions, and let them cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until they begin to brown at the edges.  Add the garlic, and cook 1 minute more.  Stir in the wine, stock, water, and rosemary.  Bring the mixture to a simmer, and cook, covered, for 10 minutes.

2.  Add the Lima beans, red pepper, corn, and salt.  Let the soup simmer another 5 minutes.  Then squeeze a bit of lemon into the soup, add a dash or two of balsamic vinegar, and stir in the salt and pepper to taste.  Serve the soup topped with Parmesan cheese (don't worry, a little for taste won't do you in.)

Bon Appetit!
