Welcome back!  It is amazing that we are already three quarters of the way through August!  Many of you are probably thinking, "Where has this summer gone?"  I have heard from many clients this week that a feeling of lethargy is creeping over them. Apparently, lots of us haven't finished all the projects we planned to do, and now September and all it entails is upon us. No wonder we feel like we're in limbo, not knowing which way to turn!  And how is your sensible eating fitting in? Not surprisingly, it's flown out the window, right?  Well, it doesn't have to be that way!  You need a plan, and if not a plan, just an understanding that you are not alone. What you are feeling is very normal at this time of year. Not that it helps, but you have lots of company!  That, at least, might help minimize your guilt! Trust me, you have nothing to feel guilty about. You are a traveler on a journey that will take you through many twists and turns. That's all there is to it, so relax.
 
Meanwhile, in today's "Tea Time" I write about what you can do to get through the next few weeks. It's easy and you'll feel better almost immediately if you give it a go.  Also, in the "Did You Know"  I talk about one of America's favorite foods: the beloved hot dog.  Then, featured in my "Favorite Things to Eat," is the lovely asparagus, another tool in the arsenal against  bloat. The season's almost over, so hang in there and try a few servings of these - you'll feel better at once!

At the very least...
 
Lost. I think that is what many of you are feeling at the moment. I know that's how I feel, here in the middle of August. I'm hot and bloated and a bit unmotivated.  Yep, just a bit lost.  The reality of the end of summer has started to creep into our consciousness. The cooler weather is dawning and with it the end of long weekends, pool parties, barbecues, and vacations.  For most of us, it's time to get serious and head back to work, or school, leaving behind the easygoing, freewheeling summertime.
 
The arrival of fall and the return to life on a schedule is actually good news for those of us who need structure to keep on track. However, we can't help feeling that we have missed out on something, and somehow this summer did not measure up to the glorious unfolding of events that we anticipated last May.  We feel compelled to make the most of the few remaining weeks to finish up something. But finish up what? Well, having fun, of course. Isn't that what everyone else did all summer?  Are you one of those who feel as if you missed out this summer? Perhaps you were left out of the really big parties, or maybe the vacation wasn't all you had hoped for?  So now, here at the end of the summer, do you feel a bit lost, not knowing what to do to make it right? From what the majority of my clients are saying, this summer was less than perfect.
 
The danger with feeling like this is the tendency for many to try to make up for a summer that doesn't seem worthy of talking about because it ended before we felt we had connected with anyone, especially any of the "in" crowd.  At a loss to figure out how to catch up and attain something that is actually not there, we end up feeling uncertain. Should we look back and try to fix the summer, or look ahead and start planning the future. It's like we're in limbo, frozen in time, doing nothing productive. 
 
Earlier, a client mentioned that every week my e-zine's seem to hit the nail on the head. She said she finds them to be uncannily pertinent to the state she is in. I shared my belief that on a deeper level we are all the same, and all of us are going through universal ups and downs together. When I described how I felt at that moment, she said it was exactly how she felt: like she was in limbo, without direction in any area. As far as her weight loss was concerned, she was holding on, but not really motivated to get the number down. Fortunately, she wasn't throwing in the towel, but she was in a dangerous place because she didn't have a destination, a plan.
 
I reminded her and will reiterate to you that losing weight is not what most people think it is. It is not a straight shot down; a race to the end; a diet. It is a way of life; of choosing life; of moving forward and gaining a greater understanding of yourself.  The process of losing weight is a part of the whole, and it does not stand on it's own. If you can put it in perspective and understand that there will be times when it will be easy and  times when it will not, then you can hold on and maintain your weight and stay the course. I can honestly tell you that it is about to get much easier for all of us. I promise!  If you just hang in there, you will feel victorious for having made it through the entire summer without gaining, and then you can continue your progress, on schedule, in September.  Unless, of course, you are doing amazingly well-then yippee for you! If you find yourself up, well, try to learn something about the pattern of the summer so it doesn't get the better of you next time. 
 
So, what should those of us in limbo do? Honestly, the solution is easy, really easy. I am not going to ask you to pull it all together right now. Nope! If it were that easy, you would have done it already.  All I am going to ask is that you do two things for the next few weeks. By doing these two very simple things, you just might become motivated to start moving forward to the next level down even before summer ends.  At the very least, doing them will definitely help you get rid of some of that bloating and back to feeling great. 
 
I don't want you to make big changes in what you're doing unless you are feeling super motivated. If that's the case, then please do!  For the rest of us who are in limbo, please do this: add five or six bottles of water to your day.  I'm not asking you to stop doing anything else - although it wouldn't hurt to clean it up a bit! For now, just add the five or six bottles of water.  Next, I want you to have a nice dark green salad for dinner. Make it with greens, fresh tomatoes, white onions, parsley and some beans.  Easy, light, and tasty.  Again, I am not asking you to change anything else: just add that nice healthy salad. If you have something after, I don't care!
 
Eating a healthy salad and drinking a ton of water will help start you thinking about taking care of yourself again.  The water alone will revitalize you and start the process of burning off some of that fat.  The crispy, fresh salad will remind you how great it feels to do something good for yourself, and it will also help eliminate the water weight that feels so uncomfortable and has been playing with your head.
 
Come on folks, in just a few more weeks you'll start feeling that strong motivation again. Until then, help yourself out a bit. Who knows, you just might start losing sooner than planned!
 
 


 


Did you know... 

that processed meats can be deadly to your health? 

I guess you must know that on some level, right?  I mean, does anyone actually believe that processed meat has any nutritional value? Even if we all know these deli delights aren't "health food," we might not realize how dangerous they are to our health and that of our children.
 
Processed foods such as cold cuts and packaged meats like bologna, salami, and processed ham are very high in sodium and very high in saturated fats, which we all know by now are linked to high blood pressure and heart disease, but you might not realize they also contain sodium nitrite.  Nitrates are closely linked to cancer of the bladder, esophagus, stomach, and brain!

Sodium nitrite, found in processed meats, is the precursor to nitrosamines, the chemical that speeds up the growth of cancer cells. When processed meats, or anything containing sodium nitrite - even canned soup - are ingested, nitrosamines are formed, and they can start the development of the cancers mentioned above. The more the meat is treated with preservatives and processed, the greater the risk of the nitrosamines doing their deadly work.
 
Now, I would like to talk about one of America's most beloved foods: the All-American hot dog! I think we all try to block out the negative press directed at our much - relished  hot dog because we just love 'em!  I did for many years. It was not just any old dog that  got me salivating. Oh, no! I craved nothing but New York City street vendor dogs, the ones  you buy on the corner from the guy who looks just about as fresh as the water he pulls the dog from. When I wanted a hot dog, I looked the other way as he fished that baby out of the murky depths and flopped it onto the roll with hands that were clearly more familiar with hot dog water than soapy water. To be honest, nothing mattered as much as sinking my teeth into that spicy, crunchy dog - not even the mustard and sauerkraut dribbling down my chin. That was bliss. But alas, I could not continue to delude myself into thinking that the dirt those do-gooder health nuts had on the dog was false.  Perhaps if I had stopped reading, I could have continued my love affair with "Frank"; but even though I did sneak out for a rendezvous every so often, (and  wish I till could), I  had to accept the awful truth: my love would ultimately break my heart...
 
Okay, so in my research, I found a study done on children who ate more than twelve hot dogs a month. Now that sounds like a lot of hot dogs, and you might be thinking, Well, of course that number of hot dogs isn't healthy, and those kids probably had problems. All things in moderation.  But to put it in perspective, if one child were to eat twelve apples a month what negative effects would you expect? None, right? That's because apples are inherently good for your child (and you).  However, children who ate more than twelve hot dogs a month had nine times the normal risk of developing childhood leukemia! Do you find that amazing! I think it's astonishing. Another study found that children who ate hot dogs one or more times a week had a higher risk of developing brain cancer. An even more astounding finding was that children whose mothers ate hot dogs during pregnancy had an increased risk of developing childhood brain tumors.  So, if you are still too infatuated to end your love affair with "Frank," please use protection and at least eat the kind labeled, "nitrate-free" or "nitrite-free." 
 
When you start reading the labels, you are going to run into a bit of confusion, so let me share what I have learned in order to help you make better choices. You should watch for any hot dog that includes the words "with by-products" or "with variety meats." The USDA requires this type of wording if the meat contains raw meat by- products such as heart, kidney, stomach, intestines, or liver.  Also, watch for any hot dog that has a casing and artificial colors within the casing. 
 
Another lovely thing done to this type of "meat": it is mechanically separated. This means that they force the bones with attached meat through a sieve to separate the bone from the tissue.  Mechanically separated beef is now prohibited for human consumption since it has been closely linked to mad cow disease, but mechanically separated pork and poultry are still permitted.  Products that exceed the USDA calcium content, due to the bone, must be labeled as containing "mechanically separated" meat. Other products labeled "beef franks" or "pork franks" or "chicken franks" can contain turkey or chicken meat, turkey or chicken skin and fat, and turkey or chicken by- products. 
 
If that weren't enough, hot dogs have been found to contain a harmful bacteria called listeria. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that is commonly found in soil, streams, sewage,
water, plants, and  food! Listeria, or the bacteria responsible for listeriosis, is a potentially lethal food-borne contaminent. To put it into perspective, the fatality rate for those who contract a severe form of this infection is about 25% compared to the more commonly known salmonella, which has a mortality rate of 1%!
 
I hope I have shed a little bit of light on the dark side of the bad boy of American cuisine, but I could no longer look the other way. Even I must admit that loving Frank isn't good for me. No longer can I even consider a secret rendezvous; it's just not meant to be. All of this wisdom did not come to me overnight; it took years of learning and discerning. So, please, teach your children that there are dogs out there that have no business poisoning their lives!

My favorite things to eat!
 
Asparagus with Fresh Citrus Dressing and Toasted Almonds
Serves 6
 
I love asparagus - clearly, since it's in this section - but it's not only because of how it tastes and how much you can do with it, but also because of what an amazing natural diuretic it is.  I am hanging in there this summer with my up and down numbers on that scale, retaining 4 to 6 pounds!  I have decided to counter all of this bloating with eating foods that will help me let go of it all!  There is only one downside to eating asparagus, don't be surprised after eating them that the water you release has a funky smell. Don't panic; there is nothing wrong with your kidneys, it's just what happens.
 
Nutritionally, asparagus are full of folic acid, which might help control homocysteine, a risk factor for heart disease, cancer, and birth defects.  Asparagus is also high in glutathione, an antioxidant that protects cells from damage.  Also, it reduces bone loss, improves sexual desire, enhances erection, and can help with arthritis and infertility. It can also help fight different forms of cancer. Interestingly, the Greeks used asparagus for the treatment of bee stings, heart ailments, dropsy, and toothaches. WOW!! If that weren't enough, a 2006 study showed that an extract of asparagus significantly increased the action of insulin by producing an 81% increase in glucose uptake in fat cells! Pretty amazing, those asparagus!
 
What you need:
 
2 tbsp. almonds, sliced
1 ½ - 2 pounds asparagus stalks, washed and trimmedAsparagus
¼ tsp. freshly grated orange zest
1 tbsp. orange juice
1 tsp. fresh lemon juice
2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
kosher salt (if needed) and freshly ground pepper to taste
 
What to do:
 
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Toast almonds in a small shallow baking dish until golden brown, 4 to 5 minutes.   Meanwhile, steam asparagus until crisp and tender, about 4 to 5 minutes.  Transfer hot asparagus to serving bowl or platter. In a small bowl, whisk together orange zest, orange juice, lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper to taste. Spoon orange dressing over top of asparagus and sprinkle with almonds.
