Hi and Welcome back!

I don't know where you live, but if you're in the Northeastern U.S., it is hot and humid, and it doesn't look like relief is in store for us any time soon!  Remember that while it's hot and we're losing water through perspiration-the slightest effort is leaving us New Englanders in a puddle-we all need to compensate by hydrating like it's our job! Keep drinking plenty of water: it will help cleanse your system of additional salts and keep your rate of water retention down!  It's way too difficult to lose weight in this kind of humidity. If you don't give your body enough water, it will go into camel mode and hoard every drop you do give it, resulting in the dreaded bloat. Sorry, but that's what the body is designed to do: you know, keep you from dying of the heat! So double up on your water intake and stay away from that salt!!  Consume foods high in sodium and you will regret it very soon after the fact when you literally blow up!  How do you know if you are retaining? Well, check your rings. If they're tight, you're retaining water.  Another clue is if you find yourself feeling achy, tighter and more sluggish. Some of you might even find that your blood pressure is up a little bit. Thirst is another telltale sign. If you are drinking lots of water and not urinating often, you are definitely retaining.  So, up the ante with that water, and try to stay cool!

Today, I'm writing about summer vacations.  How do you manage to go away for a much-needed break and not gain weight? How do you stop the perpetual cycle of weight gain while enjoying your week off?  Well, read on, and I will show you how: it's not as hard as you might think.

Also, in the Do You Know section, I am beginning to delve into one aspect of a very important subject that no one wants to talk about, but everyone listens when someone else discusses it.  Curious?  Then read on....

Summer Vacation!

If you're like me, you've been waiting all year for your summer vacation, eager to head to the beach for some fun in the sun or maybe to hang out by the pool.  It really doesn't matter what you do because the wait is over and it's summertime!  But hold on! Ugh!  You forgot!!  Vacations generally spell weight gain.  In addition, vacation planning generally sees us going into denial, and thinking that this will be the year we don't gain an ounce; this year we're on top of it! Inevitably, when one of my clients leaves for vacation, she will say, "This time, I'll lose a pound or two. If not, I'll at least stay the same."  This is almost always the kiss of death because when you're overconfident, you go away without a plan.

Years ago, vacationing was a big problem for me.  Since I was always fighting my weight and starving myself to maintain, it was nearly impossible to go anywhere and enjoy myself and still eat properly.  I most often traveled to Spain to visit my family, and I remember one such trip when I was finally only eight pounds from my goal weight. I was feeling pretty good about myself and thought the three-week vacation would pose no problems; after all, I knew the routine, and knew I could adapt to any situation. As was my habit when planning a trip to Spain, I dismissed any thoughts about what might become of my food plan when I got there. I mean, everyone in Spain is thin: they eat small portions of mostly fish and veggies. What's there to worry about?

That year, I went to visit my grandparents. On the first day, my grandmother, BaBa, commented on how thin I was. I could clearly see that in comparison with everyone else, I was definitely the chubbier one; nevertheless, I figured that if BaBa thought I was too thin, then I must look better than I thought. And so, I ate accordingly!  By the time I was ready to go home, I had outgrown my own clothes and was borrowing my aunt's skirts!  On the last day, I went to say goodbye to BaBa. "Ah," she said, "that's better. Now you look nice and healthy." I felt huge and wondered how this had happened!  It had only been three weeks. The food was so healthy. I ate what everyone else ate. Why didn't they gain weight? What is wrong with me?  Don't I deserve to eat whatever I want while I'm on vacation?

What I really deserved was to be the weight that I really wanted to be. What I deserved was to be able to wear my own clothes during my vacation.  And truthfully, it might have looked like everyone was eating a lot, but they weren't.  I was the one thinking about where we were going to eat at every corner. I was the one always thinking  about food.  So, my days started with hearty American breakfasts, rather than with a light cappuccino and a small pastry like my relatives.  At lunchtime, Spaniards enjoy the largest meal of the day. Shops close and everyone spends a few hours with family, eating and reconnecting.  Dinner, then, was a much lighter meal consisting of a small tapas, usually at a bar. Now, one tiny tapas was hardly going to do it for me. Not even after a huge lunch! So, night after night, I indulged, turning the traditional tapas into the equivalent of a hors d'oeuvres dinner. The result of all this was that my BaBa could happily send her granddaughter back home a little "healthier" than she was when she arrived.

Eventually, I became intolerant of my excuses for gaining between four and eight pounds on every vacation, and I stopped the nonsense. How did I do it? I made a plan. Simple. And, I can honestly say that you, too, can go on vacation, have a great time, and enjoy your food without gaining weight! You simply have to think it through! It's all about balance and choices. So let's get planning, shall we?

First of all, everyone loves to exercise when they're on vacation. I don't know why; maybe we feel less constrained by schedules, but for whatever reason, the sneakers come out for the first time all year and we start walking, jogging or hiking.  So, that's the good news! Bring your cardio game with you and do it religiously!  Second, don't think that a little cardio will compensate for all the fried foods and pancakes that you're dreaming of having, because it won't.  When you're on vacation, your basic rules still apply.

Have a healthy breakfast. If you're at a diner, make sure you ask for something safe, and remember to tell them to hold the toast!  Everyone serves oatmeal, or cereals, or even an omelet (with some spinach perhaps?), so this is an easy meal for most. Just don't blow your whole day on a big breakfast-if you need help with self-control, remember that you might be in a bathing suit in a few hours, and who wants that extra bloat to strut on the beach?  Third, make sure your water intake is up, very, very up!  This will help you get through even the hardest moments of your vacation.  It keeps you busy, limits water retention and makes you feel good, knowing that you're still on track!

Okay, on to lunch. This is an easy meal if you're at a resort, or by a pool because vanity can help you, once again! Just picture yourself poolside. You're in your bathing suit, nice and sweaty and greased up with suntan oil. Now picture yourself diving into some big sloppy burger when a blob of mayo plops onto your stomach.  If you're like me, the thought of eating, basically naked, tends to gross me out enough to stop me in my tracks.  Just don't do it! It doesn't look good!  Instead think about how you feel. You probably had a late breakfast, and you're probably going to have an earlier dinner, so avoiding a sloppy naked lunch shouldn't be so terribly difficult. Why not go for a light fruit salad, or a small green salad to tide you over until dinner?  As for you pina colada drinkers, rest assured that having a small fruit salad and a few of those means that the last thing you need is a full meal!

Please, please, please stay away from salty and fried foods! You're on vacation to enjoy yourself; leaving six pounds heavier, wearing your aunt's clothes, is not a vacation memory you want to create. Keep pumping the water all afternoon and by the time dinner comes along, you can easily order a nice fish dish with a side of veggies.  This is not as hard as you think; just hang in there and remember that you're walking around wearing next to nothing!  So, stop eating so much!  And lastly, if your family enjoys a little ice cream while on vacation, you can opt for one of the Italian ices: it will satisfy your craving, refresh you, and allow you to participate in the fun of the moment without compromising a single thing.

It's worth the effort to feel and look great at the end of the trip, knowing you have been victorious. Staying committed to yourself and your plan has either allowed you to drop a few pounds, or to maintain the work you did all winter and spring! Yea you!

Do you know...

Oh Poop?

that we are what we don't poop.  I know, I know. What are we doing talking about this topic?  Well, it seems odd that we spend all of our time talking about what goes into our bodies and no time talking about what comes out, or doesn't.  This is such an important topic that you will just have to get over the subject matter for a few minutes.  As uncomfortable as my clients are about discussing the matter of waste disposal, it quickly becomes a favorite topic-well kind of!

Human beings are mammals and should defecate three times a day, or once after every meal.  No?  That's not how your body functions?  Twice a day? No? Okay, then, once a day? What? No? Not even once a day? How about once every other day? Once every three days?  Well, to my astonishment my typical beginning weight loss clients report having a bowel movement two or three times in a good week, and think that is perfectly normal.  Well, it's not.  Not only is that not normal, it is very dangerous to your health!  Our stools tell a story of their own: a story that most don't want to know anything about, but one that in some odd way kind of fascinates us, no?  You don't have to admit it or even discuss it with anyone, but please read on.

There is so much information to share with you that I could not possibly cover it in one edition of this e-zine, so, today I am going to focus on hemorrhoids. Yes, hemorrhoids, and how to avoid them. A bowl movement should be painless and easy, meaning there should be no need to push, and you should hardly notice any odor! They should be well formed, in a long continuous "S" shape, not loose and not too hard.  Your stools should be a medium brown in color, and they should float. You should not see any blood in your stools, nor should they be mucousy or gassy.  Bowel movements should occur, at the very least, once a day.  A lot to ask?  Maybe so, since most people's bowels are in very bad shape.

It is said that all disease begins in the intestines, and is it any wonder? The average American diet is so low in fiber that forming a healthy stool is impossible. Indeed, most diets that are low in fiber are high in animal proteins, mostly meats. Meats are full of bacteria; in fact, most meat-based diets can register bacterial levels as high as 75%! When we couple a meat-based diet with a low fiber diet, we run into problems because a healthy stool takes much longer to form. Therefore, the bacteria-laden meat passes through the colon so slowly that it begins to dry up. This creates the need to push it out of the body with great effort. The result: constipation and hemorrhoids, to name just a few problems.  Not to mention the increase of bacteria that is created from the slow process of meat decomposing within your intestines, creating a slew of health issues.

The body needs three things to be able to create a healthy bowl movement in the 14 hours it should take food to go from your mouth to your, well... you know.  It needs, hydration (water), fiber (fruits and veggies) and lubrication (omega 3's).  So, what to do if you are one of the many who do not pass the poop test? Well, I guess you might think of laxatives, and they work, but they can make things worse by irritating your bowel walls.  You can also try an enema. I happen to know a few people who admit to being addicted to this form of elimination. The problem with enemas is that they only help you achieve partial elimination. The real answer will, I'm sure, come as no surprise: high fiber and low saturated fats!  The better you eat, the easier your body will produce large, soft, moist, well-formed stools that slip and slide right out of your tuckus!

A few fun facts about what happens when your stools have dried up and you are sitting there pushing away.  When you try to push a stool out, you increase the pressure of blood in the veins of the rectum and legs.  After a long time this leads to hemorrhoids and varicose veins of the legs!  Actually, hemorrhoids are varicose veins of the rectum. The pressure created by straining can cause the stomach and the esophagus slide up into the chest through the hiatus, resulting in a hiatal hernia. Additionally, you might experience chest pain, indigestion and belching.  I knew a woman who lost her father, husband and boyfriend to straining on the toilet!  They all died of a heart attack while relieving themselves. This is a true and sad story for her, but it leaves us with something to think about.

Another major health issue on the rise is diverticulitis. This condition develops when the continual presence of old, dry stools in the intestines have pushed the colon out of shape, and caused the formation of little pockets called diverculum.  Diverticulitis occurs when these pockets rupture and become infected. This problem is virtually unheard of in a person with a high fiber, low saturated fat diet, but here in the good old U.S.A., it is virtually an epidemic.  In the U.S.A. more than 75% of people over the age of 75 suffer from diverticulitis.  These people suffer from repeated attacks of inflammation and bleeding in the colon that causes severe pain.  If not diagnosed in a timely fashion, removal of the affected portion of the colon is necessitated.  The good news is that switching to a diet high in fiber and low in saturated fats often successfully treats this problem.

So, the next time you are passing you morning with a good read (this e-zine, perhaps) sitting on your royal thrown, why don't you take a peak and see if you pass the poop test? If you don't, please try to take it very seriously. The way you are eliminating your bowel can not only tell you how well you're eating, but it can also indicate the state of your general health and the condition of your digestive system. Your attention could very possibly save your life.

My favorite things to eat!

Green Soup with Sweet Potatoes

Serves 4 to 6

Growing up, my younger sister refused to eat anything green.  It wasn't about not wanting to eat veggies, it's just that she refused to eat green food.  Even green Jello was out of the question!  It took years, past her teen years for sure, before she would try something green.  She has overcome her phobia, but apparently she is not the only one who dealt with this color issue. So, here's hopin'  you don't mind green food because you don't want to miss out on this very delicious soup-any more than you want to miss out on a slue of other delicious green dishes!  Tasty and hearty enough for a light meal; take it to work for lunch, perhaps?

Here is what you need:

2 tbsp. olive oil, plus more for garnishGreen Soup

2 yellow onions, chopped

Sea salt, to taste

1 ½ pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and diced

3 ½ cups water

2-3 tbsp. chopped fresh sage leaves

1 bunch kale

1 bunch green chard

8 cloves garlic, peeled

3 cups (low sodium) vegetable broth (Trader Joe's has a good one)

Freshly ground black pepper

Fresh lemon juice

Here is what you do:

1.  Heat olive oil in a medium pot over medium-low heat.  Add the onions and a pinch of salt and stir frequently until the onions are soft and golden brown, 30-40 minutes.

2.  Meanwhile, place the sweet potatoes in a large pot with 3 ½ cups water, ½ teaspoon salt, and the sage.  Bring to a boil.  Lower the heat and simmer, covered, about 10 minutes.

3.  Wash the kale and chard, trim away the tough stems, and chop.  Add to sweet potatoes along with garlic and vegetable broth.  Cover and simmer gently for 20 minutes.  Add the onions to the soup and let cool slightly.

4.  Puree the mixture in a blender, in batches, and return the pureed soup to the pot.  Season to taste with salt, pepper, and lemon juice.  To serve, drizzle olive oil over individual bowls of soup.
