JustLoseItwithBerta Volume 1 Issue 12 03-25-2010

Dear ,
I have been publishing my e-zines and blogs for three months
now, and many of you have expressed support and gratitude for what I have shared
about my unique approach to weight loss.
I am happy that my readership is growing, but I also feel a bit frustrated
by my inability to get to know all of you and help with your individual
day-to-day challenges. While I could
write forever about my past clients and what we have learned from one another,
I would love to be able to address the obstacles to weight loss that you, my
readers, are currently dealing with.
Years ago when I thought of creating an online community, I
decided not to do it because I didn't think I could really help others using
only the written word. I hope I was
wrong. I hope that the information I am
sharing here is touching a nerve with you.
I believe, with absolute honesty and total conviction, that my approach
to weight loss and improved health is the only way to change, forever, your
relationship with food because it is the only program that places the focus
where it belongs: on your willingness to look within and acknowledge the truth
of who you are and celebrate your inherent value. Strengthened by this knowledge, you will
change, with ease, your behaviors around food. I want you to talk to me; I want
to show you the way.
This is why I am excited about preparing my first
teleseminar. For those who do not know
what a teleseminar is (as I did not), it is basically a class taught over the
phone. This one is going to last an hour
and there will be no charge to participate! I will explain to you how to get
started on your weight loss plan, how you should feel as you get accustomed to
it, and how it feels finally to lose weight. It is my sincere hope that this
new avenue of communication will allow you to get to know me, as well. If you
are interested, and I hope you are, then please go to Start Losing it with Berta Teleseminar and
register. It's scheduled for 8 p.m. April 7, 2010, but don't worry if that time is a conflict for
you because I will be posting a recording of the call so that you can listen
later.
Once you register, I would love to receive emails with
questions you would like me to address on the call. Don't forget, the call is
scheduled for April 7th at 8 p.m. I hope you will be there!
Meanwhile, this week was great, as usual! Discussions with
my clients revolved around issues that their spouses or significant others are
having. It seems that the idea of being
on a cleaner eating ticket is throwing the loved ones for a loop! They are not so happy with some of the
changes happening around the house. They
miss the guilty pleasures of late-night raids on the refrigerator and the
togetherness of splitting a decadent dessert. They feel guilty doing it alone
because it's just no fun, and so they tell my clients, "You're no fun anymore!"
Check out my response to this in "Tea Time."
Obviously, I don't agree. MY
clients rock! And so do my readers!!
However, if any of you are feeling a bit like a drag in your role as
health-conscious master chef, you'll find good advice at www.JustLoseIt.com/blog.
Thanks for tuning in.
Tea Time with Berta:
Did you know... Me
Too!
that most woman gain between 10 and 15 pounds
every year? It's true for everyone, including me! You heard right. Just like
you, I will gain up to 15 pounds in any given year. The only difference between
us is that now-and this was not always the case-if I go up two, three, or even
four pounds, I will lose them, and lose them quickly, before they have time to
"fester" and start the head games that used to plague me and still plague my
clients.
When I go on vacation, or take a long weekend off, or just
simply "let myself go" for a few days or a few weeks, I will find myself a few
pounds above my highest Loop number.
That's when the red flag goes up, warning me to get back in the Loop
before it's too late. Now I realize that
you might think I am in no danger of going off the deep end, but that is simply
not true. Spiraling weight gain is a
danger we all face if we're not Consistent. For goodness sake, just look
around! Obesity is epidemic in our country, not because it only occurs in certain
people, but precisely because it can occur in EVERYONE .
At the risk of seeming self-absorbed, I would like to speak
about the confusion around goal weight and maintenance from personal
experience. Every single time my weight
exceeds my Loop high by two pounds, I know that if I don't bring it back down,
that two pounds will turn into four and then eight, just as it does with you. I
know that when I am up two pounds, it will take about a week to lose it. When I go up four pounds, I'm looking at two
weeks. Eight pounds will take
considerably longer, and this is where we get into trouble. The longer it takes to lose this weight, the
less likely we will be to get rid of it because the less apt we will be to
stick with the weight loss plan. I know
you're probably thinking that my two or four pounds are nothing compared with
what you want to lose, but it really is a very similar challenge. Please, read on.
I believe the downfall of most weight loss plans is that
they never really get you to your goal weight. They sometimes get you close,
perhaps, but not all the way. Why is
that? Well, it seems to me that women
expend more energy and place more importance on losing the first seven to ten
pounds than the last seven to ten. There are two problems with this
phenomenon.
First off, if you are always seven to ten pounds away from your goal
weight, then you are perpetually in the mindset of trying to restrict what you
eat, and you live with constant guilt over everything you eat that is not
"allowed." So, you go on vacation, or
take a break from this perceived state of vigilance (which is really not quite so
vigilant), and gain two or three pounds.
Unlike me, you can't look at it and say, "No problem. I'll get on track
when I get home and be in my Loop in a week, if not sooner." Why?
Because, you are now two or three pounds over your "almost" goal weight:
you now have the seven to ten you never lost in the first place, plus an
additional two or three. Therefore, you're now
up nine to thirteen pounds and that number is going to take a lot more than a
week to lose. Mentally, you are
virtually defeated before you begin because you have been thinking
"restriction" and feeling guilt for all of the years in which you never got to
your goal in the first place. In effect, you have never been off the "diet" even if you
weren't following it very closely. See?
The second problem with not achieving your goal is that you
then never discover the range of your personal Loop. Looping is a normal function of a healthy
body, and once you get to your goal and understand that fluctuating a few
pounds is to be expected, you get out of the mental prison of guilt and
denial. You discover what it is like to
eat whatever you want because you know how to control your weight.
So my plea is this: get to your goal as quickly as possible.
Don't play the game of always hovering around that ideal weight. Take it and
own it and never let it go. I will help
you get there and will talk you through it, but first I want you to envision
the whole trip and understand that it's the same journey for us all. I have
done it, and I know how the mind plays with us as we maneuver our way through
the obstacles. I can draw you a map and steer you clear of the potholes, but
you have to keep yourself from getting lost in your own head!
PS. Remember, I'm waiting to meet you on Facebook Just Lose It with Berta!
My favorite things to eat!
The first week of spring!
This time of year, I can't help looking forward to the wonderful garden
produce soon to come! Eggplant is one of my favorite veggies and you can do so
very much with it. This recipe is easy
and delicious!!
What you will need:
10 oz. small eggplant
1/2 cup olive oil
Basil pesto (Homemade is so much better than store bought.
Recipe follows.)
What to do:
Cut each eggplant in half lengthwise and place on a lightly
oiled baking tray. Drizzle with a little
olive oil, and bake in a preheated 375° oven for about 20 minutes. Turn over and cook 15
minutes longer.
Pesto*
(Please make the pesto! It's so easy!)
1/4 up pine nuts
4 garlic cloves, crushed
1 tsp. sea salt
2 large handfuls of fresh basil leaves
1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil, or to taste
Place pine nuts in a dry skillet and sauté gently and
quickly until golden (about 30 seconds).
They burn very easily, so be careful.
Let them cool. Transfer to a food
processor or blender, add the garlic, sea salt, and basil, and blend to a
paste. Add the Parmesan, and blend
again. Add the oil and blend again until
smooth. Thin the pesto with more olive
oil if desired.
When the eggplant is cooked, drizzle with the pesto and
serve hot or cold.
*Make a double batch and store in the refrigerator covered
with a thin film of olive oil. It will
keep for weeks and is delicious on salads and spaghetti squash!
Bon
Appetite
