JustLoseItwithBerta Volume 1 Issue 11 03-18-2010

Dear ,
Welcome all! I have had a very productive and exciting week continuing preparations to launch my Just Lose It With Berta website! But before that goes up, I have been working hard to put together my first tele-seminar. This free class will be conducted by telephone and is open to anyone who would like to call in and hear what I have to say about getting started on my program. I plan to discuss what you can expect in the first few weeks, and I will even tell you exactly how and when you will lose those first pounds. I will also explain the best way to navigate through my e-zine and blog in order to get the most out of them. The tele-seminar will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7. To register, just click onto this link: Start Losing it with Berta Tele-seminar and sign in. Don't worry if you might not be around at that time, because we will have a recording available. Once again, this is a free introductory tele-seminar for anyone who would like to get honest, effective weight loss information. Please invite a friend, if you wish. The call will last one hour, and I look forward to meeting you all there! My blog this week is about what we subject ourselves to as a result of our use of (or, in many cases, our obsession with) the bathroom scale. At some point in the beginning of their weight loss journey, the problem arises and my clients (and now many of my readers) plead for tips on how to deal with the dreaded bathroom scale. I decided that this might be a good week to talk about another little secret we don't like to acknowledge: our issues with the number on the scale. Some want to toss the darn thing out the window; others can't get enough of checking in with it. What is the problem? Well, many people get pulled into the whole head-trip of processing what the number on the scale means. This week, I'll help you start to identify and rethink your often treacherous relationship with the blasted thing! From those who weigh in five or ten times a day, to those who literally had to throw it out the window so they couldn't, to the those who do it once day with their eyes covered and fingers crossed, the problems around this digital devil are enormous! To learn more about you and your scale, please click www.JustLoseIt.com/blog and finally take control, once and for all, of your relationship with that tyrant; show it who's boss... Just step on it!
Tea Time with Berta:
Most folks have a certain idea of what the path toward weight loss should look like. When you envision losing weight, you picture yourself at a certain goal and assume that you know what you will experience along the way, right? After all, we have all done this in the past, and we get it. If, for instance, you weigh 150 pounds and you envision yourself down 30 pounds, you assume that if you are right-on with your program-no cheating or excuses-then when you get on the scale after the first week, you will be down 2 pounds. Great! That's what you expected, and that's what should happen. The next week you do it again, and voila! It happens again! Just as anticipated. And so it should be from start to finish: 2 pounds per week, goal reached, done deal, yea me! Unfortunately, even if you're perfect, and let's assume you will be, the process might very well look a bit different. You might go down two pounds the first week, another two pounds the following week, and maybe one pound the week after; however, when you next weigh in you could be up three pounds! The next three weeks might find you down one, down one, and up one. All the while, this up/down, down/up fluctuation could begin to play with your head. If you don't pay attention to it, you might just give up on yourself because you just don't understand what others in the Loop know. So, let me explain to you the nature of the Loop. That's right, the Loop. We all have it and we all live with it. You merely need to be aware of it so you can correctly interpret what you see on the scale each day. Here's how it works. Whether you are losing or maintaining, the Loop works the same way for everyone-even those skinny rhymes with "b"s! For most people, the Loop is a two to four pound range within which their weight fluctuates AT ALL TIMES. It's nearly impossible to weigh exactly the same every day due to the effects of water retention, bloating, bowel movements, and undigested food. All of these will impact what our scale registers. What does the Loop look like if you were maintaining 130 pounds? Well, if that were the case, some days you would get on the scale and see 128, some days you would see 130, and other days you would see 132. That's your Loop. If you are maintaining 130 and you see any of those numbers, you're absolutely fine. You are neither gaining nor losing; you're just living your Loop. If you were to go over 132, you would need to do something to pull it back in, and if you were to go below 128 you would be able to relax your guidelines a little until you Looped up to your low, once again. There is no difference when you are losing. The Loop is the Loop. If you are on your way down from 150 pounds, you will see many numbers going down and a few fluctuating up. For instance, you might first have some days where the low number of 146 goes back up, but only to 149. In a week or so, the low might be 145 and the high 148. Your challenge is to remain in control, confident that as you move steadfastly toward an overall loss, you must observe the Loop in action. When you understand the Law of the Loop your confidence in your ability to take control of your weight and your health will remain unshaken, no matter what information the scale shares with you each morning! So, think about all that fussing you've been doing over numbers that used to scare you. Now you have the secret: You're in the Loop!!
Did you know...
that 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated? This might seem odd when you think about it. When is the last time you saw a group of people and none of them were clutching a water bottle? Well, the reason for dehydration is twofold: you really are not drinking enough water, and the excess salt in your diet is robbing your body of the hydration the organism needs to support itself. Let's address the first inconsistency. Everywhere you go water is hyped and most of you buy in. You can choose water from mythical, mystical springs near and far, water with "natural" effervescent qualities, water purer than the virgin mother, water robust with a daily dose of vitamins, water flavored so even the gaggers among you can get it down. Water, water everywhere, but how many drops do we actually drink? Judging from the number of half- finished water bottles rolling around the floor of my car and those of my friends, I'm guessing, not much. Girls, just admit it, the water bottle has become an accessory-not like a Coach bag, but more like a copy of The New Earth, in the sense that "Yup, I'm going to get to it...as soon as I have a minute to spare." As for the second inconsistency, most people do not understand that they can drink water all day long, but when there is excessive salt in the body from dietary choices, the salt attracts the water to itself, literally drying us out. This has the effect of keeping water from circulating throughout the entire body, hydrating and purifying every cell. In addition, although a small amount of salt allows the body to hold onto enough fluids to hydrate the body, excessive salt causes the body to retain too much fluid, causing problems like high blood pressure, kidney disease, congestive heart failure, and bloating. The salt and water paradox can be a bit confusing, so let's just say that you should consume very little salt (almost none!) and drink at least four 16 oz. servings of water per day to help your body care for itself. It is interesting to note that in about 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is mistaken for hunger. The next time you think you are hungry, try drinking some water instead of eating. You might be surprised to see that the water is just what your body needs. In a study done at the University of Washington, it was shown that one glass of water effectively shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied. Give it a try and see if it works for you; it does for me. Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue. If you need proof, try spending a few days drinking very little water and taking notes on your energy level. Then, drink water constantly for a few days and compare your energy levels with that of the previous few days. I think you will be amazed at the difference. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water per day can significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers. Headache sufferers also benefit from increased hydration. Give it a try and let me know how you feel! And, a mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page. All of this brings me to my pet peeve. I can't count how many times each day I hear people say, "I can't drink water. It makes me gag." Are you serious? Water accounts for approximately 60% of a healthy human body. How is it possible that a body would reflexively reject that of which it is made? How have we convinced ourselves that we don't "like" or can't "take" water? Since we're all about experiments today, let's imagine that your dog is out romping in the summer heat. You know he'll be in any minute, panting for a drink. How about filling four bowls with beverage choices that will help him hydrate without gagging. Hmm...You could offer him a bowl filled with chilled diet Coke, and maybe one with a nice mocha latte, and another with a refreshing raspberry-mint tea, and perhaps a pilsner shaped bowl with a frosty Corona (lime optional). By the time you had assembled all of these problem solvers you would probably be thinking, "This dog is just way too high maintenance. How did he ever learn to gag on water in the first place?" Water. Are you drinking enough?
