Dear ,

Hi Everyone.  It's great to have you back, and thanks so much for another week of extremely helpful feedback. I've found your questions and comments invaluable as I work toward making my e-zines and my blog as practical and supportive as possible for those of you with an interest in finally taking control of your lives.  Many of you have e-mailed me directly, and that's great, but I wonder if you would be so kind as to allow others on the journey to hear what you have to say? If you would leave your comments right on the blogs themselves, I think we would all have a better experience of shared insight and support.  My goal is for you, my readers, to begin forming ties with women and men like yourselves who have experienced so much in your efforts to achieve and maintain weight loss.  Let's all commit to extending our hands in friendship and support this week! Understand that nothing you have experienced is unique to you alone, and sharing with others is a powerful step toward liberating yourselves from long-hidden issues.

In this week's e-zine, I discuss calcium and touch on some of the common misconceptions the media and many "knowledgeable" sources would have you embrace.  Also, check out a quick tip to help you stay strong during that afternoon slump when you're tempted to snack.  Then, when you're ready for a great meal, dive into a delicious, calcium-rich salad that is guaranteed to hit the spot!  Please, take a few minutes for yourself today and read on!

When you click the link to my blog, you might recognize yourself! I'll be talking about something that seems to be programmed into our very DNA, something that makes it nearly impossible for us to find the time to eat properly.  You might think that with all of our freedom of choice, our lives would be in perfect balance. Sadly, we have to admit that our lives are anything but balanced, and perhaps the time has come for us to rethink some of the choices we freely make.

So, folks, if you have ever said you had a bad week because of the Blood Drive or the Library Renovation Auction or the Parish Anniversary Dance, then I wrote this week's blog just for you!  Click on
www.JustLoseIt.com/blog  and let me help you get your name back on your own To Do List!

 Tea Time with Berta:

Berta cup of tea photo

Here is a tip to help you through the harder moments of the day.  It might sound too simple to be effective, but I guarantee you that it will do the job.

It's a fact of life: there is one particular time, every single day, for every one of us, when resisting the temptation to snack is a bit more challenging than it is the rest of the day. For most of us, this happens sometime in the late afternoon when we feel a bit hungry and are beginning to wander around the kitchen, perhaps thinking about what to prepare for dinner.  If you're like most of my clients, you find yourself staring into that refrigerator, no longer thinking about the family meal.  You are just noticing that it all looks sooo good!   Well, here is a little something you can do to squash the impulse to eat:  Have a cup of tea.  That's right, a cup of tea-decaffeinated, please. If you're not usually a tea drinker, take the opportunity to explore the herbal tea isle at your local grocery store. Allow an exotic flavor to entice you into suspending your out-dated thoughts about the joys of tea! These are not your grandmother's teas, girls!

A cup of tea (or the equivalent) is the perfect snack. It is relaxing, amazingly flavorful and will satiate your desire for the snack that might fill you up and throw dinner off course. This could, quite possibly, throw off the whole evening resulting in your going to bed full.  For a more complete discussion about going to bed full, see my blog on  "Consistency. "

If you are really proactive, you might even plan for that afternoon slump, thus avoiding all problems with food. Simply decide ahead of time to take 10-15 minutes for yourself at whatever time the slump usually hits. Prepare a cup of tea, and then, really go to hell with yourself and actually sit with your feet up and enjoy the fantastic aroma and flavor of your new, favorite beverage! You will be amazed at how rejuvenated you feel afterward.

It wouldn't surprise me if you began to look forward to the witching hour because now...

Tea time is Me time!

Did you know...

that most of what you believe about calcium is inaccurate? I know because I spend a lot of time educating my new clients about where and how they obtain and maintain calcium.  Most cling to the notion that we must derive all of the calcium necessary to maintain strong bones from dairy products.  Why don't we talk about this erroneous belief?

Let's start with a statistic the "Got Milk" commercials don't share with you. This country is one of the largest consumers of dairy in the world, and interestingly, we are also one of the countries with the highest rate of osteoporosis and brittle bone disease. How could that be if dairy products are the best source of calcium, as most of you believe?  Perhaps we need to consider more than the amount we take in.  Maybe it would also be a good idea to talk about how we obtain calcium, how we absorb it, and more importantly, how we prevent it from being depleted from our bodies.

Allow me to simplify this for you.

The Food and Nutritional Board (FNB), Committee on Diet and Health, recommends the following amounts of dietary calcium:

Children
           1 to 3 years        500 mg
           4 to 8 years        800 mg
           9 to 18 year    1,300 mg

Men and Women
            19-50 years   1,000 mg
            51 + years      1,200 mg
Great sources of calcium are dark, leafy vegetables, nuts, beans and peas, sea vegetables, grains, oysters, sardines, salmon, and many more non-dairy foods. However, if you wish to ensure an adequate intake of calcium, either via food or a dietary supplement, you should know that your body does not absorb calcium on its own.  You need vitamin D to aid absorption.  In addition, you must take calcium with magnesium because calcium on its own will interfere with the absorption of magnesium and other minerals.

Okay, we now know that the recommended dosage must be taken in conjunction with Vitamin D and magnesium. Let's go on and take a look at things that actually deplete our bodies of calcium. I'm sure you'll find the following information eye opening.

Excessive calcium depletion is caused by...

Too much sugar
Too much sodium
Too little fiber
Phosphoric Acid in cola beverages

And, believe it or not, by...

Excessive animal protein consumption

What? Did you just read that animal proteins increase calcium loss?  Yes you did!  And just in case you might have forgotten, milk is an animal protein. "Let me get this straight," you might be thinking, "Milk is an animal protein (bad), and milk is a dairy product (good)?"

Just Think About It...

My favorite things to eat!

Quick Chickpea Salad  (This is delicious!)

What you need:

2 cups  cooked or canned chickpeas, rinsed and drained
4 marinated artichoke hearts
4 large semi-dried tomatoes, cut in half
8 oz. very ripe cherry tomatoes, cut in half
8 scallions, sliced diagonally
handful fresh basil leaves, torn
small bunch fresh chives, snipped
parsley leaves, chopped
2 oz. fresh Parmesan cheese, shaved
1 tbsp. black pepper

Easy to make Dijon dressing
1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 tsp. Dijon mustard
1 small garlic clove, crushed
sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Combine dressing ingredients in a bowl and beat with a fork.  Add the chickpeas, artichoke hearts, and semi-dried tomatoes, and toss in the dressing.
Cover and chill for up to 4 hours.

When ready to serve, add the cherry tomatoes, scallions, basil, chives, and parsley. Stir gently, sprinkle with the shaved Parmesan and pepper, and serve.

Bon Appetite!
