JustLoseItwithBerta Volume 1 Issue 7 02-18-2010

Dear ,
Hi and welcome new and returning readers! I want first to thank you all for your continued readership and support! I just had a conversation with a friend and client who told me she enjoys my e-zines and loves the blogs so much that she wishes she could forward them to her friends. Yes! Of course! Please do! I said. Many of you have asked the same thing, so I thought this might be a good time to reiterate that Just Lose It with Berta is a free publication for you to enjoy and pass on to your friends and family. I would like as many women as possible to benefit from my years of experience; please, Ladies, don't hold out on the women in your lives! Many of you have told me that the blogs and e-zine have sparked honest, insightful conversations among friends. That is precisely what I wish to see happen. In order to send the e-zine to friends, simply go down to the bottom left corner of this e-zine and click "Forward email ." Thanks, everyone, for sharing!
Good news this week from most with whom I have had contact. We have climbed back on track, finally, and feel much more solid and focused. That's great to hear, and I congratulate you all for your consistency! Since many have had a successful week, I thought I might discuss a topic that becomes especially important when you are feeling strong and in control. Now, don't think I intend, IN ANY WAY, to discourage or "jinx" you. On the contrary: what I want to discuss can be seen as preventative medicine. And when do we use preventative medicine? Exactly! Before a problem arises! Let me introduce you to Slippage. I cannot say exactly where I heard this term before, but for me Slippage is another tool in the weight loss bag of tricks: one that will save you from an unnecessary downward spiral, over and over.
You might think I plan to talk about times when you feel down and weak and turn to food for comfort. Actually, it is just the opposite. When I speak of Slippage, I refer to the times when you feel wonderful: you are on top of it all! Then, something happens. Well, not exactly... It's actually the point before something happens. Slippage begins in an instant. You are doing great, and then you experience a slightly negative incident or thought that you minimize or completely ignore. In that instant of denial, Slippage sneaks in. It happens to all of us, and it probably happens to you more than you realize. Ladies, Slippage is like a penny on the railroad tracks; it's insidious and can derail even the INVINCIBLE YOU!
Sound intriguing? Let me teach you more about where Slippage might lurk, the way to recognize the signs, and how to stop it before it becomes a big problem. See you at the blog at www.JustLoseIt.com/blog :
Tea Time with Berta:
No Soda! I think it will not surprise anyone that I do not use soda, and that means soda of any kind!! This, some will complain, is not an easy thing to do! I know I will hear this complaint because I know that many women think diet soda is actually a health food. It is NOT! In fact, if you were to ask thin, attractive, healthy, and fit women what they drink, I can almost guarantee that their beverage of choice would be WATER!! The people you see drinking diet soda are the people who need to lose some weight and become a little healthier. Healthy, thin people drink water, not diet soda! Okay, why no soda? It think that it goes without saying that to lose weight no one would drink sugar soda of any kind, right? For those of you who think straight soda couldn't possibly do that much to create weight gain, let me tell you a story. There was a time in my life when I was a bit addicted to Pepsi. That was my drug of choice. Oh, yes Ladies, it was bad. However, it was the perfect addiction. It was socially acceptable to drink a Pepsi occasionally, and it was loaded with sugar for my sugar fix, and caffeine for my caffeine fix. Perfect. Because of my work, I used to experiment on myself to see what certain "foods" actually did to me. One of my experiments dealt with my old friend Pepsi. Of course nobody today would argue that regular soda is not fattening. However, it is not uncommon for my clients to protest that just a little can't be that fattening. Really? Let me tell you just how fattening a little Pepsi can be. Once upon a time, when my weight was actually in control for the first time in a long time, I somehow got back into the soda habit. I began drinking one soda every day--only one. Now this was at a time in my life when I was very active, and was eating well and exercising regularly. After one month, only 4 weeks of having one soda every day, I managed to gain 5 pounds! That's an awful lot of weight for just adding one Pepsi per day. So, if you are a regular soda drinker and don't understand how even a little can have a huge impact, think again. Ah, I can almost hear many of you out there thinking, Okay. We agree. Of course regular soda makes us fat, but diet soda has no sugar. Therefore, it's harmless and besides, it helps us over the "hump." Why can't we have it? I'll tell you why. You should not have it because it is full of synthetic sweeteners. Think about it, chemical companies, not Mother Nature, make these sweeteners. These chemicals-let's speak truth and call them what they are-have been linked to brain tumors and bladder cancer. The Center for Disease Control gets more complaints about these chemicals, which cause headaches and joint pain, than they do about any other "food" product. If you are willing to put up with the pain just to taste something sweet, perhaps you might be swayed by the knowledge that diet soda inhibits weight loss. How? Well, diet soda is twice as disruptive to your weight loss program as regular soda. The artificial-read chemical-sweeteners and flavors in diet soda that are used to mimic real sugar and natural flavors, will actually make you fatter. Your body does not recognize chemical sweeteners, so it does not know how to effectively digest them. Instead of burning them off like normal sugar, these chemicals stay in your body and are converted into fat cells. By the way, for any of you who might be wondering about your children's weight issues, perhaps you should look at their soda intake and consider switching to water as a family. It makes a big difference with our weight, not to mention our health. At this point, you might want to try a little experiment on yourself. Ban the soda and see what happens. Really... Just Lose It!
Did you know?
I just came across some statistics in Food Revolution, by John Robbins, that are so staggering and sobering that I just had to share them with you. Did you know that 1.2 billion people in the world are underfed and malnourished? And... Did you know that 1.2 billion people in the world are overfed and malnourished? Can you believe what you just read?? Overfed and malnourished! That's us! That's this country. That's what our eating habits have done for us! We eat too much and are malnourished in spite of having more than enough healthful foods from which to choose. Disturbing? Shameful? Here's more: Did you know that 56 % of the underfed and underweight children in Bangladesh have diminished health? And... Did you know that 55% of the overfed and overweight adults in the United States have diminished health? We might not be able to help the children in Bangladesh, but we certainly CAN help ourselves! It's a choice; good health and nutrition are ours to choose. We have an abundance of everything, and we are simply choosing the sickening over the healthful.
My favorite things to eat!
Here is a tip to make life easier: when making something that you enjoy and perhaps this stew will do the trick, double the recipe. You could then, perhaps, take it to work for lunch the next day, or freeze individual servings for a quick, healthy meal when you just don't have the time to plan for your own healthy eating. The best frozen foods are the ones you freeze yourself. Simplify your life! Parsnip and Barley Stew: Serves 6 (Enjoy one today, one tomorrow and freeze the others)
What you will need:
1 lb. parsnips 1 med. onion 2 tbs. olive oil 1/4 tsp. ground cloves 1/2 tsp. dried thyme 1/4 cup flour 5 cups water 1 med. potato-peeled & diced 1/3 cup pearl barley 3 cups milk-organic, low fat 2 tsp. sea salt 1 ˝ tbsp. tamari (low sodium please!) 1 ˝ tbsp. lemon juice Freshly grated nutmeg Chopped straight leaf parsley Pepper to taste What you will do:
Peel and slice the parsnips. Cut onion into quarters and slice. Sauté onion in soup pot with grape seed oil, cloves, and thyme until golden brown. Add 1/4 cup flour and stir well with wooden spoon. Add 3 cups water and potato. Cover and simmer 30 minutes. In another pot simmer barley in 2 cups water until done--about 45 minutes. Turn barley and cooking liquid into soup. Season with sea salt, tamari, lemon juice, and freshly grated nutmeg. Add milk and bring to a simmer. Garnish finished stew with chopped straight-leaf parsley and freshly ground pepper.
Bon Appetite! *Recipe from The Best of Bloodroot, Volume I - Vegetarian Recipes. This is one of my favorite cookbooks.
