2011 Highlights
Jiu Jitsu Competition and Growth Our Jiu Jitsu Team competed in more than 17 tournaments, including the United Combat Sports Submission Tournament, Team Quest BJJ Classic, the Spring Submission Wrestling League, Arizona Open, Pan American Jiu Jitsu Championship, World Jiu Jitsu Championship, Grappling X, Las Vegas Open, Texas Europa Fight World Championship, Philippine Brazilian Jiu Jitsu National Championship, The Revolution, Oregon Open and US Open. Along with the many individual wins, Impact took home the first place team awards for the Sub League Championship, Oregon Open and United Combat Sports Tournament. We had many Jiu Jitsu belt promotions throughout the year. Long standing member Todd Betters was promoted to Black Belt and we added several new brown, purple and blue belts to our team. In the Cage Our Fight Team engaged in several local and national MMA events in 2011. Promotions included FCFF Rumble at the Roseland, FCFF Caged at the Coast, Valhalla Galla, United Combat Sports, Breed Standard's Caged Rage, Mirjavadi at Brawl in the Fall and Apocalypse (Michigan) and Sotiropoulos at UFC. Our team fight record for the year was 13-3. World Class Instruction Our academy brought new skill infusion to the local market by hosting two notable professional martial artists. First was a seminar featuring Clark Gracie, the grandson of the founder of Gracie Jiu Jitsu and a rising star in the world of Jiu Jitsu and submission grappling. Most recently in November we hosted Andre Galvao, 2011 ADCC World Champion in both his weight class and the absolute weight category. Both seminars were well attended by many local MMA/BJJ academies. In addition, we hosted two seminars highlighting local Jiu Jitsu. Participants from multiple academies across the Northwest were in attendance. The Black Belt Training Camp in April featured five Impact Jiu Jitsu black belts, each sharing their best techniques during the 4-hour session. The Youth Seminar in March, coached by local and national champion Bryan Marugg, focused on youth BJJ competition preparation and training. Youth & Teens Program The youth and teens classes saw growth in enrollment and offerings in 2011. The teens are now training in boxing as well as Jiu Jitsu. The younger students enjoyed week-long camps focusing on Jiu Jitsu, striking and self defense over the summer and winter break. A number of our young athletes competed in the Sub League, Oregon Open and Grappling X tournaments, challenging themselves and bringing home many victories. Community Support Our 2011 fundraising efforts took another leap. Our main charity event is the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life. Our goal to match 2010 fundraising levels was exceeded when our team dug deep and raised over $7K. So many more of our members where involved. Local organizations including NW Fightscene helped out by promoting fundraising efforts. Under our subleague.com banner, we raised 1,267 pounds of food and $2,560 for the Oregon Food Bank, proving once again that our BJJ/MMA community is a healthy and giving group. Looking Ahead Over the past 13 years, the one thing we have found to be consistent is the ever growing popularity of mixed martial arts and Jiu Jitsu. It is our continuing goal to offer top level instruction and a great community in which to learn and practice this great sport, profession and lifestyle. |
