Skills Growth Recognized with 13 Promotions

Impact Jiu Jitsu kicked off the new year on January 8 with a huge cross train in Beaverton. With more than 50 grapplers on the mats, members enjoyed excellent training and comraderie. To top it off, the cross train ended with ten new belt promotions.

Blue Belts: Humberto Sanchez, John Raven, Bob Meath

Purple Belts: John Atkins, Matt Koppleman, Diadon Acs, Adam Woods, Lorraine Zelinksi, Jeremy Carver

Brown Belt: David Rubin

All of these guys, and gal, have been training hard, and their promotions were well deserved. To make a great day even better, during the belting ceremony John Raven proposed to his girlfriend, Tara Deal, and she said yes! We are very excited for them, and we are honored that they shared their special moment with us. We wish them all the best.

Since January 8, Impact Jiu Jitsu has promoted three more deserving athletes. Congratulations!

Blue Belts: Keith Martin, Chris Smith, Susumu Takahashi

Strength and Power Training

IPTStarting in March, Newberg Impact Performance Training will be adding Strength and Power training classes to its schedule. These will be different from the Metabolic Circuit training classes. The focus will be on building strength and power rather than on conditioning. The classes will be limited to 12 participants per day and students must sign up before the start of each class. For more information, please speak with Dewey or Jamie in the Newberg Impact facility.

Impact Receives Prestigious Honors

Northwest FightScene Magazine and Vicious Fight Gear named Impact Jiu Jitsu "Gym of the Year 2010" and head coach Michael Chapman "Coach of the Year 2010" on January 16. This is a great honor for Impact. There are many great coaches and gyms in the Northwest and for Impact to win this, especially in the awards' inaugural year, says a lot about our academy. We are truly grateful for this honor and we could not be as good as we are without the support of our members and coaches.

"On the Go with Joe" Visits Impact
On January 17, Impact Jiu Jitsu was featured on Channel 12's Good Day Oregon morning show segment, "On the Go with Joe". The segment promoted the gym as well as the January 22 United Combat Sports Health, Fitness, and MMA Expo in Salem which would feature Sub League's submission grappling tournament. Unfortunately, the clips were never uploaded to the internet, so only you Fox 12 Oregon-watching early-risers got to see Impact live on TV.
Big Victories at United Combat Sports Tournament and Cage Fights
John Atkin's WinTeam Impact Jiu Jitsu traveled to the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem on Saturday, January 22, for the Sub League sponsored United Combat Sports Submission Tournament. This year's tournament featured both gi and no-gi grappling. Impact's competitors had an exceptional day, ultimately bringing home the first place team award. For more information on the tournament and full results, please visit subleague.com.

Later that evening, Impact had two fighters in the United Combat Sports cage fights. Bryan Nuro and Lee Flores both crushed their opponents and won via rear naked choke. For more details, visit Coach Michael's full fight report.
Valhalla Galla
Matt Hammon competed in the February 4 Valhalla Gala. Always up for a challenge, Matt took the fight with about three days notice. The event was set up as a two-round fight, three minutes per round. The competitors were required to wear 16 oz. gloves, headgear, and shin quards.

First round started with a bang. Matt had great movment, pressure, and was very aggressive. Towards the end of the round in an exciting exchange, Matt leaned to throw a right hand but got caught with a high kick. After an 8-count, Matt was back in there, but his edge was gone. Matt worked hard the next round but just couldn't get his tempo back. Unanimouns decision went to Matt's opponent "Pepsi" for a well fought match.
Team Quest BJJ Classic
On February 12, Impact Jiu Jitsu entered four competitors in the Team Quest BJJ Classic tournament. It was a white and blue belt only tournament and the first one held at Team Quest Tualatin.

Greg Walker only had one other person in his division. They had three matches, with Greg winning the first and last to receive the gold medal. Keith Martin competed well in his first tournament as a blue belt. Unfortunately, he lost by one advantage in his first match. He controlled the round the majority of time, but first match jitters kept him from submitting his opponent. John Goforth started out strong in his division, which had only one other competitor. He won his first match, but lost the next two. Chris Harvey competed in his first tournament ever. He did well and listened to his coaches throughout. He lost his matches, but showed great potential.

Greg, Keith, and John would then compete in the blue belt absolute along with Phillip Roberti from Team Quest. John submitted Greg and Keith submitted Phillip to advance to the finals. John and Keith train together often and had a very entertaining finals match, with John finishing as the victor.

Thank you to all who competed and all those who showed up to support and coach.
Relay for Life with Impact
Team Impact Jiu Jitsu Kicks Off Fundraising Efforts for 2011 Relay For Life
Impact Jiu Jitsu is making a difference by once again teaming up to participate in the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Beaverton. Please support our efforts by joining our team or by making a donation today.

The 24-hour relay kicks off at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, at Valley Catholic High School in Beaverton. Our team will camp out and relay for the full 24-hours. Last year, Team Impact raised more than $5,500 for the American Cancer Society. This year we hope to raise even more.

Saving lives from cancer starts one team, one participant, and one dollar at a time. The impact we can make together is much greater than what any of us could do alone. To learn more, join the team, or make a donation, visit Impact's Relay Team page.
