2010 Highlights
Jiu Jitsu Competition
We participated in over 12 grappling tournaments this year, both locally and internationally. Impact competitors brought home medals from each tournament, including the PAN JJ Championships, Mundials, US Open, Las Vegas Open, The Revolution, Sub League, Oregon Open, and more.
Twenty Impact members traveled to the PAN JJ Championship in southern California. This is the largest team we have ever brought to an out-of-state tournament. We were one of the smallest crews there, but we were also one of the loudest, as we rooted for our teammates. A few memorable moments include Coach Richard Rangel winning gold in the masters purple belt lightweight division, Coach Bryan Marugg winning silver in the adult blue belt lightweight division, Coach Armand Debruge proving he is mentally stronger than his body as he crushed much heavier competitors, and the whole team watching the UFC fights at John Manzi's home.
Mixed Martial Arts
We had a strong presence inside the cage this year as well. Larry Munyon won the FCFF 205 pound title. Pro Escobedo won his professional debut at the Portland Strikeforce show. Bryan Nuro won his debut fight in the FCFF. Bryan Torres won at the Valhalla Gala. Shaun Mirjavadi won the heavyweight title in the "Impact Fight League" main event in Auburn Hills, Michigan. And there were many more.
We have helped our friend George Sotiropoulos stay undefeated in the UFC as he beat three top name opponents this year. Impact's wrestling coach, Eric Jetton, has been in George's corner his last couple of fights, even giving George the shirt off his back.
Personal Achievement
We promoted approximately 15 blue belts, nine purple belts, three brown belts, and two black belts (Josh Long and Dewey Nielsen). The skill level continues to rise and rise.
Gym Growth
We have added Jason Tubania to our coaching staff. Jason runs an awesome kickboxing class on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Judo black belt Patrick Hendricks is instructing a new Judo class on Monday nights. Both programs have been getting good reviews, with requests coming in to see more of them.
We now have a Brookings, Oregon, affiliate school and are also running classes at the Portland Community College Rock Creek campus. The PCC classes are led by Coach Richard Rangel and will expand to PCC's Sylvania campus this January. ClubSport MMA, powered by Impact Jiu Jitsu, is still going strong thanks to Coach Shaun Ryan.
Newberg Impact Jiu Jitsu moved next to Impact Performance Training and upgraded to new Swain mats. Both facilities now share a much larger space. Newberg also added youth classes, led by Coach Bryan Marugg, which have already taken off.
Beaverton's youth program has seen great growth in 2010 with more kids enrolled and competing than ever before. Nice work coaches, parents, and students.
A Bigger Presence on the Web
In 2010 we launched new websites and Facebook pages:
impactjj.com - Impact Jiu Jitsu's main website
bjjnewberg.com - Coach Matt Leech's Jiu Jitsu blog
impact-pt.com - Impact Performance Training's primary website and home to Coach Dewey Nielsen's blog
Both Impact Jiu Jitsu and Impact Performance Training have new Facebook pages (enter "Impact Jiu Jitsu" and "Impact Performance Training" in the search bar at the top of your Facebook homepage). The Impact Jiu Jitsu page is especially useful for keeping people on the edge of their seats with live updates posted during out-of-town tournaments.
Crosstraining
We participated in and hosted many gym crosstrains. Thank you to Seaside BJJ, Touch M Up, New Breed Academy, Mata Leao, Northwest Martial Arts, GIRLS Gym, and all the other Pacific Northwest gyms for helping to grow our games. It's great seeing the growth in everyone's schools and all of the promotions this year. Congratulations to our friends Nathan and Zach Adamson, Chris Dealy, Del Ingram, Jared George, Scott Abernathy, Omar Santiago, and Bill Bradley on your promotions this year.
The first in a series of training camps featuring Impact Jiu Jitsu's seven Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belts was held in September. It featured black belts Michael Chapman, Armand Debruge, Keisuke Andrew, and Cameron Apple. Forty five athletes were in attendance, making this one of the largest seminars in Oregon.
Community Support
In July, our team raised over $5,500 for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Our goal was $4,000 and we blew it out of the water. This means a lot, as many of us have been directly or indirectly affected by cancer. In December, members participated in the Beer for Pooches Pub Crawl benefiting the Oregon Humane Society. Impact also hosted a number of UFC viewings where member donations went to help friends in need and a canned food drive benefited the Oregon Food Bank.
A Year to Celebrate
Thank you to everyone who took the time to attend Impact's holiday party. Approximately 180 people were in attendance. A great time was had by all.
This is just a partial list of what the Impact family accomplished in 2010. We have even more planned for the upcoming year, including another great showing at the PAN JJ Championships and other tournaments, a Beaverton gym expansion, more Black Belt training camps and seminars, another successful Relay for Life, and much much more. We love seeing the growth of our sport in our gym as well in the Pacific Northwest. Thank you for helping us accomplish all of this. We could not have done it without you!
