| Relay for Life
On Saturday, July 24, Impact Jiu Jitsu moved shop to Valley Catholic High School in Beaverton. Team Impact Jiu Jitsu, as well as Team New Breed Jiu Jitsu, arrived at Relay for Life early in the morning, ready to make the track home for the next 24-hours. Friends and family who have survived cancer came out and celebrated, walked the track, and enjoyed the sunshine while we all walked, ran, and yes, even grappled.
When Sunday morning came and our team's 30-days of fundraising was totaled, Impact Jiu Jitsu surprised everyone. Organizers announced that out of the 58 teams (many of which began fundraising a year in advance), Impact Jiu Jitsu came in with a top-five fundraising finish. Team Impact Jiu Jitsu not only met its $4,000 goal, it surpassed it with a total raised of $5,511. Team New Breed Jiu Jitsu brought in an additional $1,588. In total, Relay for Life of Beaverton raised more than $125,000 for the American Cancer Society with this year's event, and fundraising continues through the month of August!
We could not be more proud of our team. Everyone came together and gave it their all. Those who joined the fundraising effort took the challenge to their family, friends, and co-workers and made a huge difference. We want to thank everyone who donated and came out to show their support, as well as the volunteers who put on the event. They all made Relay an amazing experience.
Impact Jiu Jitsu challenges others to help save lives from cancer by supporting the American Cancer Society and it's fundraising efforts. We have already signed our team up for the 2011 Relay and look forward to an even bigger team next year. Together we can make a difference in the fight against cancer.

Revolution Results
On July 17, Impact members traveled to Bonney Lake, WA, for the most recent Revolution Tournament. Jeff Bourgeois runs an excellent event. His tournaments continue to grow with over 460 competitors on the 17th. Impact Jiu Jitsu had four athletes compete in the tournament, and they all arrived ready to battle.
First up was KC Thompson. KC brought home a first place victory, winning all three of his matches. After dominating his first two matches, KC kept us on the edge of our seats with his neck and neck battle to win his last match. KC and his opponent traded two sweeps each in regulation time to send the final to overtime. His opponent pulled guard and climbed for an armbar. KC postured and slowly worked his arm out. He then turned the corner for the pass to win the match.
John Goforth competed next in the super heavy blue belt division. There were some big guys in this division. John pulled guard a couple minutes into his first match. He played a good bottom game, but his guard was passed. John recovered half guard and went for an X-Choke. The choke was tight, but his opponent eventually escaped to win the match by points. John's second match was a short one with John stuffing an attempted takedown and quickly transitioning to a paper cutter choke for the win.
John Raven competed in his first gi tournament in the super heavy white belt division. John turns into quite the animal when he competes. He dominated his way to a first place win. John effectively used his size to his advantage against all three of his opponents. John's game plan was simple and effective: get the takedown, pass the guard, stay on top, and get the kimura submission. John continues to impress with his tournament performance.
Last was Alan Barthold competing in the Intermediate No-gi division. Alan has trained off and on with us for some time. Alan's wrestling skills are top notch. He doesn't know many submissions, but he does know how to get the match to the ground and stay on top. Alan had three matches. He won his first two by points, with a perfectly timed leg sweep takedown in the opening seconds of his second match. Eventually, he succombed to a rear naked choke in the finals match to take second place.
Congratulations to all the competitors, and thank you to coaches Bryan Marugg and Andrew Wong for helping out.

July Belt Promotions
Coach Armand Debruge gave Jonathan Morford his blue belt on Monday, July 26. This was long over due. Armand and Jonathan trained together in the past at Portland State. Jonathan has recently reconnected with Impact and is currently the owner of his own gym in Juneau, AK.
Chris Yoon was promoted to blue belt. He started training at Impact less than a year ago. He is quick to learn and is always ready to take in anything he is shown. He frequently proves that he should not be underestimated when grappling.
Adam McNamara was promoted to blue belt. Adam trains in the Newberg gym primarily with Bryan Marugg. Adam's game has progressed greatly training with Bryan. He occasionally surprises upper belts with perfectly timed sweeps and reversals.
Peter Kavanagh was promoted to purple belt. Peter trains in the Newberg gym as well. He has been training with us since the Newberg gym started in Matt Leech's garage. Peter provides a tough grapple and always has a willingness to learn new things to help out his game.
Richard Rangel was promoted to brown belt on Monday, July 26. If you have trained at Impact in the last couple months, you know what a beast Richard is. He completely dominated his stacked division at the March Revolution tournament. He also owned his entire division at Pan Ams earlier this year. Richard has an excellent competition game and is willing to share it with his teammates. He has spent many hours drilling the basics with those that are willing to learn from him. You can now learn from Richard every Thursday night in Beaverton as he coaches BJJ1 from 6 to 7 p.m.; and beginning this fall, Richard will be instructing Impact Jiu Jitsu's Satellite Program at Portland Community College.
