Gym Exchange
Crosstrain & Member Appreciation Barbecue

Saturday, May 8, was Impact Jiu Jitsu's most recent gym exchange. With approximately 75 grapplers on the mats, there was a wide range of experience levels, all training with one another and honing their skills.

As the grappling continued, coaches Michael Chapman and Armand Debruge surprised a few special people with belt promotions. There were 11 new belt promotions, including two new black belts: Dewey Nielsen and Josh Long. Congratulations to all the newly promoted. See the list of promotions below. To write about all of them would take too long, but all of these promotions are definitely well deserved.

BarbecueThe gym exchange was immediately followed by a member appreciation barbecue. Members were able to relax, enjoy the sunshine, and get to know each other a little more outside of the gym.

Later that evening, the festivities continued with UFC 113 in Impact's living room (aka training floor #1). The evening was an informal benefit for our friend and gym member who battled cancer and won. Many generous friends contributed funds to help his family recover from the overwhelming cost of health care. Thank you.

A big thank you goes out to Kirk Nolan for helping out with the grill and taking care of all our AV needs. We would have gone hungry and fightless without you.

Mundials Jiu-Jitsu Championships
Three Impact Jiu Jitsu competitors traveled to Long Beach, CA, on the first weekend of June for the Mundials Jiu-Jitsu Championships (Worlds).

Impact at WorldsBryan Marugg, hungry to win his 104-person division after his PAN Jiu-Jitsu Championship second place win, came out crushing his opponents. He submitted his first four opponents, all in under three minutes each. During his fifth match (Quarterfinals), Bryan's opponent took him down then decided to do just enough not to get called for stalling points. Bryan swept his opponent right at the last few seconds of the match tying up the score. Unfortunately, the referee gave the decision to Bryan's opponent.

Rich Rangel was up on Friday. He submitted his first opponent by a Kimura from catchers position. Next, he faced a very game competitor and was unfortunately armbarred.

Blake Nolan competed in the Juniors Blue Belt division on Saturday. He won his first match as his opponent did not make weight. In his second match, Blake battled it out and won by two advantage points. Blake was in the semi-finals for his third match, which he unfortunately lost by two points. Blake received third place.

Congratulations to all of our Mundials competitors for representing Impact Jiu Jitsu so well. Thank you Michael Chapman and Matt Leech for traveling to California to help coach our competitors. A very sincere thank you to John Manzi and his family for being so hospitable to them.
Escobedo Wins at STRIKEFORCE Impact at Strikeforce
May 21 was the STRIKEFORCE - Challengers event at the Rose Garden in Portland, OR. Impact Jiu Jitsu's Lee Flores and Pro Escobedo were on the card. Lee had a tough fight and unfortunately lost by unanimous decision. Pro made his professional fight debut. He controlled his opponent, Jason Sharp, for all three rounds and won by unanimous decision.
