Congratulations Blue Belts
Congratulations go out
to Lindsay Hall, Calldan Coffman, and David Dehnert on their much deserved promotions. They were awarded blue belts after the BJJ3 class in Beaverton on
Wednesday, November 11. We have watched all three of these athletes' games grow immensely
over the past two years. They have honed their skills to become great
competitors and training partners. Great job to all.

Impact Storms the Revolution Twenty-two Impact Jiu Jitsu members went up to Bonney Lake High School in Washington on November 7 for
the Revolution tournament. We had 11 competitors and took home seven medals:
four 1st place and three 2nd place.
Coach Armand Debruge
was up first. Armand pulled guard and played a guard game for nine minutes that his
opponent could not pass. At the nine minute mark, Armand sunk in and
finished his opponent with an X-choke. After the match we found out that
Armand's opponent has never been unsuccessful passing guard or been submitted
in a tournament. Next up was Cameron Apple. Cameron was dominating the entire
match from the top position. Midway into the match Cameron re-injured his rib
and could not continue. Hopefully Cameron heels up soon so we can see him in
action again.
The blue belts were up
next, represented by Yuen-Han Lin, Rodney Buswell, Bryan "Beast" Marugg, John
Goforth, and Shaun Ryan. Yueh-Han's first match was against a worthy Jiu Jitsu
competitor, the match went the distance. Yueh-Han pulled out the win with a one
point edge. His next match was against a very good free-style wrestler who was
able to keep ahead of our man. Yueh-Han lost this match but learned a lot and
will be ready for this kind of game next time. Rodney crushed his way to second
place, but aggravated a
neck injury in the process. In the finals he got caught in a triangle
and ended up tapping because of his neck. Bryan Marugg and John Goforth
dominated their way to first place. Bryan had some tough matches, but battled
his way through and even submitted his final opponent with a triangle. John
Goforth was competing in his second tournament ever and his first as a blue
belt. He played a good guard game throughout the whole tournament and ended up
submitting his final opponent with a paper cutter choke. The ref didn't see it
and his opponent denied tapping, which sent the match into sudden death
overtime. John reversed his opponent's judo throw for the win. Shaun Ryan had a
couple tough matches. He lost both matches, but gained a lot of experience and
knowledge in the process.
Next up were our purple
belts represented by Brian Baker, Andrew Wong, and Richard Rangel. Brian,
having been busy in his work and personal life jumped into the tournament with
less training than he would prefer. He had
some tough grapples. He did not come out the winner, but now has
a renewed desire to step up his training. Richard Rangel thoroughly controlled
both of his opponents to win first place. Andrew Wong's first match was against
an opponent he beat in the last Revolution tournament. He half guard swept his
opponent twice to win the match. In the finals he wrestled a much larger
opponent. During the match he got taken down by an awesome judo throw, had his
guard passed, and ended up losing the match to points. Andy never stopped
trying to improve his position and gain advantage over his larger opponent. That is just one of the reasons why he is such a great leader for all of Impact!
Patrick Hendricks was
our only white belt that competed. Patrick has been training Judo for many
years but recently decided to expand his game. In his matches he was able to
execute some beautiful throws; however, his newness to BJJ left him a little
disadvantaged. While he lost his two matches, he now sees a path for growth. We
look forward to more of Patrick's aerial displays backed up with his new Impact
JJ skills.
Thank you to all who
came up to help coach and support your team. It was a fun time. Highlights and
matches can be found on Youtube.com and Facebook.com.

Four Big MMA Wins
Capitol City Cage Fights On October 12, Impact's
heavy weight champ Shaun Mirjavadi was able to get back in the cage
after a long layoff due to injury. Shaun worked very hard to get his
body working well, and at the same time sharpened his standup game. Good for
Shaun, bad for the other heavy weights out there. Shaun's fight was a one round
burner. With a fair amount of big man clinch followed by well placed knees by
Shaun, his opponent clearly wanted to pull Shaun to the ground, but Shaun had
other plans. One sharp right cross delivered at the two minute mark sent Shaun's
opponent to the canvas all by himself! Shaun wins by KO.
Corvallis Cage Fights On October 24, Impact
had three fighters compete in the Corvallis Cage Fights. We won all three of
those fights and brought back two titles.
Kyle Pullen competed in
his first fight. He was scheduled to fight at 145 lbs., but his opponent
dropped out. The promoter then offered a fight at 155 lbs. against an opponent
with five previous fights. Kyle decided to take
the bout, even though he would be the smaller and less experienced fighter.
Kyle controlled the first round. In the second round, coach Chapman told him to
get the takedown and go for the finish, and Kyle did just that. He got the
takedown and mounted his opponent. His opponent rolled to his stomach and Kyle
sunk in the rear naked choke for the win!
Jason Appleton fought
for the 170 lb. title against the defending champion. Jason and his opponent
had similar fighting styles. The match lasted for four rounds. In the fourth
round Jason took his opponent down and gained mount. His opponent rolled over,
and Jason sunk in the rear naked choke for the finish. Jason is the new 170 lb.
champion!
Mike Swehla was
initially scheduled to fight at 185 lbs., but his opponent also dropped out.
The promoter offered him a 205 lb. title fight and Mike accepted. The fight
started off with some heavy hands thrown back and forth. Mike got rocked but
managed to stay in the game. Mike kept his opponent tight and almost pulled off
an armbar from his guard but was unable to finish it. He managed to get
back to his feet, and the hands started flying again. Mike got the clinch and
threw a couple hard knees to his opponent's head. After eating a couple of
these, his opponent was done, and with a huge right
hand Mike won the fight KO style. Mike Swehla is now the 205 lb.
champion!
As always we
want to send a special thanks to Richard "The Cut Man" Fowler for his
exceptional prep and care of our fighters.
